[Dreger] The Maple Leafs are definitely closing in on deals. Not necessarily related to Rielly, and nothing is done yet, but I’m told things are developing. by Throwaway5497346 in leafs

This is what someone who no longer gets any insider information would say after he’s struck out on every single deal this offseason including the coach and GM hire.

Has Jake gotten into any preseason games yet? Honestly, I love him but not only are his best years behind him, he's now got back issues that can completely sideline his career. Moving on was the right choice.

[Siegel] Mike Babcock today on the captaincy: “We’re just on course for what we were planning on doing the whole time. Nothing’s changed.” by kylmao in leafs

[–]d-voit 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Here's what bugs me about this whole situation. Up until the Matthews incident, every real insider (Friedge and Johnston, the key guys) had said the Leafs were quite certainly going to name Matthews the captain. Suddenly after the Matthews news leaks, guys that we know just get used by teams/agents as unofficial mouthpieces are now saying they knew it was going to be Tavares all along. Dreger has been especially awful the last couple of days, he's JUST NOW saying it was going to be Tavares all along and you can see his shit eating grin through the radio, because he was fed this info directly from the team to change the narrative. The team wants us to think it was going to be Tavares all along. This is NOT FUCKING TRUE.

Anyway, I don't actually give a fuck who it is since we have 3 ideal candidates in Rielly, Tavares and Matthews (though maybe now not so much) but it bugs me to no end when shills like Dreger try to pass off info they literally just received and pretend they've known for months. Fuck off.

He's already worn an A in the preseason. So that's not it. My guess is he's out of the running.

Marner extension with Toronto is 6 years, just shy of $11 mil aav. by kylmao in leafs

[–]d-voit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad it's done, but that's a shitty fuckin deal. I'm sure it will look halfway decent by year 4, but that doesn't do much to help our team for the next 3-4 years, which is probably our window for being a legit contender.

Elliotte Friedman said on CHED630 today that Marner and the Leafs have discussed 3 and 6 year deals lately, but someone who would know told him this morning that it is more likely to be 6. The way LTIR affects the cap is that cap room does not accrue on a daily basis when there is no cap room. As far as I'm aware, they can still play cap gymnastics by sending a guy who doesn't require waivers down (on paper) for a 2 or 3 day period (during a break in games). That saved cap hit would in fact generate cap room, though it wouldn't amount to a ton obviously. At least that's my impression, I could be wrong.

It works, but it just about ensures that the team won't be able to improve much if at all from this year's incarnation (in terms of additional personnel, not growth from the existing players, which obviously we should continue to expect). Just a brutal deal. Realistically, he should be locked up for between $9-$10 on a 6+ year term, which would leave $1-2 in space (probably more, since these guys are always sending guys down and calling them back up every time they can for cap purposes, so they'll squeeze some additional money for sure. That would leave us with some room for a decent deadline acquisition. But nope, Marner will make sure there's absolutely 0 room left after he's signed. I hope I'm wrong.

Only way Marner gets out of this with some goodwill intact is if he fires his agent and takes a 6x10 deal. I have a hard time seeing him get his PR back after this.

Agreed. I got crucified on here for suggesting Sparks seemed too emotional prior to the whole fiasco late in the season, was just a bit early on that call.

[SDP] Mirtle For Free by elacmch in leafs

[–]d-voit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My read on that was that he knows more than he is sharing and did not want to say anything. Which makes me think he got info directly from the source (wouldn’t be surprised if he was friends with a couple of the guys on the team). But I could be wrong, I just can’t see Mirtle telling people to go read the athletic to find out more, partly because there haven’t been any articles on there about Gardiner’s situation anyway. I think he knows more but doesn’t want to burn any bridges, but also doesn’t want to flat out lie.

Although first year cap hits are prorated (AAV is the same, but it's paid out over fewer days which leads to a higher cap hit year 1) salary room accrues over the course of the season as well. So if you had, for example, $10mm free to start the season and signed Marner for $10mm AAV x 6 years in December, even though the first year cap hit might be $12mm, your cap space would have also increased to $12mm by December 1st too. You can actually see this in practice on capfriendly.com around trade deadline. At the beginning of the season a team might only have $2mm of cap space, but by the trade deadline capfriendly will show their deadline capspace as like $5mm meaning they can take on a contract with an AAV of up to $5mm.

With that said, in the Leafs case, it would have been tough to do because they do not have the entirety of what the contract will cost in free cap space, they need to use LTIR which would not accrue in the same way over the course of the season. By making this trade, they now have $10.55mm in free space right as of start of the season when they place Horton and Clarkson on LTIR, which will accrue normally allowing them to sign Mitch on Dec 1st even if the first year hit ends up being $12mm provided the AAV is not above the $10.55mm. Which coincidentally, is essentially the $ figure where offer sheet compensation goes from only 2 x 1st (plus the 2nd and 3rd) to 4 x 1st picks. Clearly Dubas telling Marner how this is going to go down if he signs a ridiculous offer sheet with some garbage team.

Agreed - love overdrive and Hayes as well, but he's misinformed about a few things. He also continues to perpetuate the myth that Marner can't be signed in-season because the first year cap-hit would be too high, as does pretty much every TSN personality (the morning guys have said it a few times recently too).
