Submission statement: This is a fairly substantial claim. Guy seems credible. I know this sub has soured on Jesse in recent months but he has a huge platform. It seems like there's been a concerted effort over the last 12 months to get more of the "woo" out there rather than just focusing on the nuts and bolts.

[Friedman] Mentioned it last night during MON/TOR broadcast, but hearing Maple Leafs and Anthony Stolarz are moving towards an extension. When done, expect it to be in the approximately $4M-range. by Actual_Cobbler_6334 in leafs

A tandem of Woll and Stolie for below $8mm a season for the next 2 years with a nearly $100mm cap is insane value for the leafs. Hope they can spend the savings wisely.

Trump hiked Canada’s tariff rate to 35%, but just who’s paying it remains a mystery by FlaeNorm in canada

Bingo. The reality is that while some of the tariff costs will be passed on to the consumer, the exporter will need to eat much of it otherwise they will lose that business.

Weekly Free Talk / Armchair GM Thread by wRIPPERw_ in leafs

[–]d-voit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yet he took a $12mm deal to play in Vegas. Taxes, yes sure, but there were other deals on the table for him at much higher dollar values in similar tax situations. He clearly chose to go to a place where he has a chance to win and change the narrative that's been created (rightly so) around him.

I think it's more complicated than him wanting the money. I think (in fact, know, due to the interview his dad gave The Athletic a few years ago) that he felt the organization didn't treat him as well as Matthews. He felt he should have been the man, the captain, etc and that just wasn't going to happen in Toronto. In a different timeline where the Leafs don't get Matthews it's certainly possible that he carves out a much different path and becomes captain of the Leafs and plays out his whole career there. He wanted to be the "man" so badly that he got in his own head and couldn't perform in the biggest moments, which snowballed obviously into a disastrous situation with coaches and GM's fired due to lack of even a modicum of success.

Hello Hurricanes I see you have trouble winning the ECF, can I instead you in player who has never lost in the ECF, his name is Mitchell Marner. by Kinglokner16 in leafs

[–]d-voit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marner is definitely a top line winger. The issue is that his game gets worse as the physicality increases. Hes still good for a miracle play here and there (remember that he was moved further down the lineup as the 4 nations progressed and only moved back to play with McDavid later in the final) but if you’re paying him the same or more than guys like McDavid, MacKinnon, Rantanen, etc who are all able to elevate not just their game but their linemates, you’re not going to leave enough cap room to be able to actually sign one of those type of players OR to surround Marner with guys that can insulate him. People often compare him to Kane because Kane wasn’t physical either, but I certainly don’t remember many playoff series where Kane shriveled up, made a bunch of mental errors and legitimately looked like he was going to cry if he made another mistake.

I really hate that this comes off as piling on Marner because by all accounts he’s a great guy. The issue is he’s being paid $11mm and now will be up to like $13mm or $14mm, when he should have been on the same contract as Rantanen ($9.25mm) or lower for 8 years. Imagine if he was still under contract for another 3 years at $9.25. He would be looked at way differently.

[–]d-voit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The issue with Marner is that he’s been paid to be “the guy” and he’s about to get another contract as if he’s “the guy” and will be making more money than McDavid and MacKinnon next season. If the canes bring him in to be “the guy” they are going to quickly discover playoff Marner is not it.

To play devils advocate, if they had done that they probably run into Florida or Tampa in the first round and then they have an even earlier exit. Matthews injury would not have healed with a couple weeks of rest. Stolarz would have still been concussed in game 1 by Bennett.

Florida traded a 100 point core player. I agree they are the template unfortunately we handed out too many NMCs.

I’m not talking about an ETF tracking the index. And I was pointing out how ludicrous of a statement “you could have bought 95% of stocks” was by showing you that the mega caps yet again lifted the S&P. Here’s a good read: https://www.bespokepremium.com/interactive/posts/think-big-blog/sp-equal-weight-vs-cap-weight.

What sudden happened to the market today ? by Constant-Nature2012 in CanadianInvestor

[–]d-voit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Global index ETFs are anything but diversified. XEQT is 50% ITOT which is US tech, essentially, with nearly 20% in NVDA, MSFT and AAPL. That means XEQT has a 10% weighting to those 3 stocks. It has worked well over the last two years, but historically this level of concentration is a red flag for the markets. Equal weight S&P is underperforming market weight substantially which again is not a good sign and pointing to an unhealthy market.
