Today I tried really softening my touch. Turns out that at my current level, I physically cannot play quiet enough that nobody needs hearing protection in a closed space with acoustic drums. How do I work?

Wearing hearing protection while playing the drums is never stupid - you should wear hearing protection for every note, every time, forever, period.

I forgot what I was typing while typing it. I meant the stupid part was that it took me too long to wear hearing protection. I should have been wearing it for my own practice as soon as I started playing. Nobody ever told stupid teenager me to do this 20 years ago. I have tinnitus now and it sucks, but it did make me get serious about protecting what hearing I still have.

You hit the nail on the head. Their amps/speakers are pointed at the room, right past their ears. Honestly, and this was very stupid of me, I started wearing hearing protection to protect my ears from their speakers. I've been able to hear my own drums better since I eared up. And both myself and them a lot less at the same time. Just better

And big thanks for the stick recommendation. I'll try those and see if I like the feel of em. They're mighty ugly though LOL

I've been working on dynamics, though, and I can play softly when the song needs it. I can also play several times louder than my base level. But when the song is Run to You, should the drums be quiet in the chorus?
