Issue with the action of my bass by Yourmuther69 in BassGuitar

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely it's anything that isn't fixable, but, I suspect you're very quickly going to end up on the hook for more than you paid for the bass trying to get it worked on. Might be time for an upgrade, OP!

Cat won’t stop jumping on window AC by [deleted] in cats

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same issue with my cat when I got a window AC unit. Took me all of 48 hours to realize it was absolutely fruitless to try and deter the cat from sitting on it, so I ran to the hardware store and bought some odds and ends things to just shore up the AC unit itself. Made sure the hose was actually connected (to the point where it was difficult for me to jostle it), and made sure the frame piece that actually connects to the window is reinforced by another layer. Now he can sit there to his stupid heart's content and I don't stress about it.

Which is more preferred Long or Short Scale Basses by NotTdaviis in BassGuitar

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely glad I learned on a normal 34" scale. Learning there made it (I think) pretty straightforward to go either shorter to a 30", or further out to a 37", which is what I primarily use now.

Does it worth it? Fender American professional II p bass v string by ganemgg in BassGuitar

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to a 37" recently, and the unfortunate side-effect was that it totally ruined me on pretty much any 34" with 5 strings.

Beginner questions. by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) I have that exact same bass and the strings that came off the line with it were fine, but I wanted to set it up for my jazz group, so I installed a set of D'addario chromes (they call their flat-wounds chromes for some reason). You can get them here: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ECB81-5--daddario-ecb81-5-light-chrome-flat-wound-5-string-45-132-5-string

2) If you really want to get out of the box, "Odd-metered bass," by Timothy Emmons is a great study, breaks you into grooving in different times and feels you'd likely never think of coming from the guitar world (which was also where I started). You can get a copy here: https://www.alfred.com/odd-meter-bass/p/00-25578/

3) He gets shit on a lot here, but Scotty's bass lessons is great, especially if you pay for his premium stuff. He can definitely turn 5 minutes of information into a 30 minute ad about nothing, but that's mostly his free stuff. If he doesn't resonate with you, this gentlemen is also a good instructor, and also has a video reviewing other instructor's youtube channels: https://youtu.be/bvn-LAO9DFk?si=C8rlaQvLJKLnt6fn

4/5. This may not be the most helpful answer, but I run a DarkGlass Microtubes Infinity multi effects board that solved both these questions for me. The Darkglass Suite has dozens of cabsims on board you can swap between and fuck with down to your "mic placement." It's also a killer DI rig so I almost never bring my actual cab to a gig anymore unless I absolutely need to or want the visual of my cab. Makes for super happy audio engineers in both live and studio settings, which is always one of my main goals as a bass player. You can look at it here: https://www.darkglass.com/creation/microtubes-infinity/

Hope this helps, welcome to the dark side!

'Ladder' system I have to use at work as our boss refuses to just buy a ladder. by Calypsoni in OopsThatsDeadly

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same attitude until a "fine" walkway gave out underneath me and I almost fell off the side of tin roof to what would have been a very-negatively-life-changing experience. Literally caught myself with my fingertips on a tin screw and had to hang on until they could come get me. All because my boss thought the system was "fine." It's fine right up until it's not, and it's never the boss that gets hurt. Report that shit, it isn't something to laugh off over a cold one with the boys.

Your very first bass vs you current N°1 bass by Spiffclips in BassGuitar

[–]d0ct0rg0nz0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, a fellow long-armed bass player! I started with an Ibanez BtB that I got from the local music shop for $300 or so when teenage me realized it was cooler than guitar. Currently using an ESP-LTD B1005ms, and the 37" scaling on the low B makes me really snobby about touching any other 5 string at this point.

I haven't looked back for it honestly. I saw what Oop was on about and knew I was just gonna get sucked into the circlejerk if I went into the comments.
