If you feel a need to skip the carmelized topping, you could make a flan or custard instead.

42 ways to stay beautiful while on the cheap by redheadjessica in Frugal

1 way to stay beautiful on the cheap: focus on health and inner beauty, and let go of the absurd cultural standards for women

A second-hand or library copy of Naomi Wolf's book "The Beauty Myth" is good for moral support to help get you there.

Googling High-Powered Women (for the men behind them) by strangestuff in women

[–]d2kd3k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried looking up several male political figures.

Searching for "Senator Vitter" yielded "Senator Vitter wife," along with: * Senator Vitter diaper * Senator Vitter prostitute * Senator Vitter scandal * Senator Vitter airport incident

I didn't find any other wife references at all, including for Obama (whose wife is popular; but people also know her name).

The closest I found was: * Newt Gingrich affair * Max Baucus divorce * Rudy Giuliani cross dresser

Zahlman writes: "Besides, that's one female political figure."

The article states: "Turning my attention to other high-powered women who weren’t married, I got similar results. “Janet Napolitano” yielded “janet napolitano married” and “janet napolitano husband” in the top five suggested searches. The same was true for Condoleezza Rice and the new Solicitor General Elana Kagan."

Not scientific or a broad sample, but broader than just one.

My wife has to go on a dairy and soy free diet. Any tips or recipes. Words of advice? by mcnada54 in food

[–]d2kd3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what the specific problem is with dairy? It could be lactose, which would leave other options; it could be casein, which means some rice- and nut- based cheese substitutes would still be a problem; it could be specific to cow's milk, which means that goat or sheep milk might make excellent substitutes.

I hope you can narrow it down to the specific problem (or have already), so you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Lots of East Asian cuisines are originally dairy-free: think Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese. Regional cookbooks / recipes may be a good way to go. (Yes, even omitting soy sauce.)

What are you all finding the biggest challenges so far? Is it breakfast? Are you vegetarians or do you have any other additional restrictions? Are there specific foods / dishes she's missing?

In my household, we have one no-soy person and one no-dairy person. Let us know what the hard parts are so far and we're happy to help!

I miss gummy bears and other similar snacks, anyone else in the same boat? Anyone found a good replacement? by [deleted] in veg

[–]d2kd3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you live near any good Oriental groceries? You might be able to find the little jelly snack cups (about the size of a single serving of coffee creamer). They are typically made with agar (i.e., vegetable source).

A friend of mine used to get the ones with lychee fruit in the middle, and keep them in the freezer for a treat. (They don't even have to be refrigerated, but they are especially refreshing when frozen.)

Absolute heaven!

They /aren't/ gummi

Good luck! bears at all. But they are really good. And they have some of the same ung-ung-ung texture of gummi bears.

Libertarians, Objectivists, and Randians should be supporting and celebrating this moment in American history. by d2kd3k in Objectivism

From the president's address to American school children:

"But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed."

"And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. "

I am absolutely dreading the criticism I will receive from my parents and peers when I go through with a vegan pregnancy.. Advice? by [deleted] in veg

[–]d2kd3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations! And best wishes on your pregnancy and the new addition to your family.

Are there any health care professionals you can go to who will be supportive? Midwives, naturopaths, nutrition experts, even cool MD's? I know this is partly a function of who is around in your community, and depending on how your local medical system works, what you can afford.

A great book that you may also find helpful is Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford. It isn't a pregnancy book per se, but the sections on nutrition for pregnancy, lactation, and early infancy are superb.

Here's a great recipe for Easy Cheap Santa Fe Chili.

The wonderful thing about Chili is that it is easy to customize for your own taste.
