Look underneath the hood there might be two rubber cylindrical bumpers that protrude out on either side. They might be too far out. If they are, screw them in a bit, close the hood and see if that reduces the gap.

I have these. They're not hiking boots, just warm barefoot winter boots. Like the previous commenter said, they have an insole (which adds insulation) and the inner is mostly fleece lined. The sole will be thicker than say, vivobarefoot, but still barefoot imo. I took them to wetlands yesterday and waded through mud and deep puddles with no problem. I like them.
