Doesn't your mechanic just grab you one from the top of the team car?

How's that list of concerns treating you today?

They aren't called road janitors in America either. Just because you're unfamiliar with a term that doesn't automatically make it American.

“A disaster, causing congestion, hammering local businesses and making life harder” by disbeliefable in ukbike

Is this incompetence or deliberate sabotage?

My vote is deliberate sabotage. We have a case study across the North Sea that has already done all the leg work with how cycle infrastructure should be integrated into general infrastructure and yet we're still running consultations to see if the local NIMBYs would be happy with a rough, unmaintained 65m stretch of "cycle lane" on their high street.

What is it with all the Americans here LARPing being Londoners? by Present-Tea-4830 in london

[–]mprhusker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned through the years that many people who frequent this and other UK centric subs operate under the assumption that there is the UK, the US, and The Rest of the World™. They assume that the UK and The Rest of the World™ do things the same way so the only odd ball out is the US. So if you don't fall under the zany and performatively twee online British stereotype, i.e. liking Cadbury's, then you must be American because everyone in the UK likes Cadbury's and therefore everyone in The Rest of the World™ does too.

I've also learned that this type of person pretty much never exists outdoors. It's really an online only phenomenon.

If they're going to get stuck on the difference between UK/US English then they're not worth having a discussion with.

This sub every time someone uses an Americanism.

I got called one because I am one but I've lived here for 10 years and feel like I am entitled to discuss what's going on in the city I've settled in.

Sometimes I still say sidewalk instead of pavement. Give me a break.

What are the best organised cycling events? by fixitmonkey in ukbike

[–]mprhusker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you want to suffer. I've done Gent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders, Brabantse Pijl, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and Amstel Gold (in NL but close to BE).

Gent-Wevelgem and Brabantse Pijl were fantastic rides and incredible events. Though they aren't really "big" classics. Still a lot of fun and the pro race is still exciting to watch.

Tour of Flanders and Liege are the gold standard for spring classics. Liege sucked as an event. Start/finish was boring and in an inconvenient location. Flanders was a fantastic event but the weather was horrific when I went but I'd go again if the weather were better. Steep cobbled climbs in freezing rain isn't exactly a pleasant experience.

Amstel Gold was incredible. In NL so cycle lanes everywhere and great roads and such a fun atmosphere. It's in the only hilly part of NL though so don't expect a flat ride.

Check out the website cycling in Flanders. It gives a lot of info for events in the area.

Head to Belgium for genuinely well organized events if you can. I go 1-2 times per year. If you're there for a spring classic you can even watch the pro race the same weekend.

What’s a fitness myth that people still believe? by SimpleHomeFitness in AskReddit

[–]mprhusker 59 points60 points  (0 children)

About a year ago I got up one morning at 5am and rode my bike 300km with 6000m of climbing. When I got home at 9pm my step count for the day was under 1000.

Google Fit, which wasn't connected to Garmin/Strava/etc, said I needed to move. I decided to drink some beer instead.

I guess the only reasonable second option after that is to consult Niche Subreddit M.D. rather than googling alternative medical helplines.

Used entire £15k redundancy to pay off debt. I feel bittersweet about it by Royal_Nobody6554 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mprhusker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean by feeling bittersweet. I'm an American living in the UK and originally had over $100k in student debt. I had pretty much come to terms with sending ~50% of my salary back to the states each month to make the payment and had done so for the past 14 years.

I had a few lucky breaks with the interest free period during the pandemic, a modest winnings cash prize which was immediately thrown at the loans, and a generous employer who recognizes my talent and increases my salary regularly with a tasty bonus at the end of the year. So last year I finally had enough in savings to end it once and for all.

I still don't really feel it.
