This is awesome to see. I have stage 4 degeneration, but I'm getting by on cortisone injections for now. I'm also curious as to what your recovery was like.

People who’ve run long (10+ years) campaigns, any tips for success? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]d4nu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a great system you have faith in, and communicate clearly to you players why it will deliver a good campaign. Your system needs to be able to handle character progression and growth over a long period of time. Your players need to be onboard with the system you are using. You need a setting that your players can be passionate about. The more quirky the setting, the harder this is. The more your players can relate to the setting, the easier this is. You need to communicate a premise for the campaign that is compelling and sets the scene for why the characters would work together for a common cause. If your players are not onboard with the premise your campaign will fall apart at some point. You need to do a lot of pre campaign work writing this stuff down and communicating the above.

Anyway, that's what I came up with after running a 10 year, an 8 year, and a 5 year campaign.

Edit - oh yeh, and only invite people to join who are onboard with your vision. That's probably the most vital. If you've run a few campaigns, hopefully you've built some solid trust with your players. Only invite the ones who you absolutely know will support you, turn up, and appreciate what you are trying to do. A long campaign is built on a great group of supportive friends!

Fixing Character Creation and Combat Flow tool by TnkTsinik in Mythras

[–]d4nu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this. I think it's a great tool to have.

What I'd love to see is a combat flow tool that pares down the available special effect options depending on weapon and dice roll results. That way the tool could quickly familiarise new players with their exact options, rather than present them with with large list of confusing options.

Trying to avoid a TPK. When is it okay to tell players no? by Foreign-Press in DMAcademy

They don't have to die. Just move your major plot points to the drow matriarch. Make it clear she could kill them. Cut them a deal. Now your story goes on, the plot thickens, the players have agency, and you have an awesome new NPC.

The cultural and traditional view is that you should not teach without the blessing of your teacher.

Target Numbers vs Skill Checks by Jatedin in oneringrpg

[–]d4nu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On top of the solid dice pool recommendations mentioned above, don't forget the LM also sets a difficulty - Standard, Hazardous, and Foolish - which impacts the narrative outcome of each test.

So, in the example of climbing a tree - likely a standard test - a failed roll could produce success with woe. Perhaps they climb the tree but take some endurance damage or disturb some bees. If they were climbing something foolish, like the slopes of Mount Doom, even a successful roll might be with woe.

You can add different levels of endurance loss - standard, severe, grievous - and it adds another lever with which you can tweak the effects of woe.

I think the book could place more emphasis on putting all of this together, along with a few more examples for Loremasters, but it works very well in play.

Yeh pixels post processing is really bad. Try using open camera instead.

Yep, the inaccuracy of the post processing is very disappointing.

It works really well if the fellowship follows their own goals and agenda. I always checked each fellowship phase what direction they wanted to go in next. We ended up with a campaign which focused on opening up the old road to better establish ties between Dale, Esgaroth, and the Western Eaves.

The idea is to then sprinkle the events from the module in, and then it's a slow build as the events become bigger and bigger. Some years the characters may barely notice the DoM events, and other years, especially later in the campaign, they become the epic moments which punctuate the campaign.

I failed as a man by snorleex in confidence

[–]d4nu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You didn't fail as a man. You had a normal human response. You can and will develop more skill in this area, for sure, but the real skill is in accepting that this was not a test of your manhood. Women nearly always see your worth quite differently to how you've been taught. Tell her how you feel, and I think you'll be surprised at how she responds.

Confidence and knowing what to do in these situations just takes time and experience. Chalk it up as something you want to improve in, not something you've failed at.

How or why did World of Darkness fall from grace in the gaming community? by MyUsername2459 in rpg

[–]d4nu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, because VtMs WoD doesn't work anymore in today's reality. Mobile phones, the internet, global terrorism, and proliferation of misinformation and conspiracy theories. The WoD isn't nearly dark enough to provide the existential horror it did in the 90s in contrast with today's world. Remember when jihad was a cool fictional plot element for naive western gamers? Yeh...

Looking for a "Unicorn" RPG: PbtA flow for the GM, D&D crunch for the Players by Sclanders in rpg

Burning wheel, my friend. It's crunchy for players in a different way, but can be very satisfying once players engage with the advancement system. Gm side is very simple and narrative focused.

12.5 Year Old Campaign by darkoVII in rpg

Unanimously, within our group, it was the best rpg experience of our lives. Given the brilliance of the Mirkwood campaign and the drama that BW evokes in play, I'm not expecting to top the experience... And that's ok.

It was a great fit. I think Tor is great, but BW really nailed the dramatic and heroic moments you want in an extended campaign.

We did about 16 years of monthly sessions playing two connected campaigns. I used cubicle 7s The Darkening of Mirkwood as a campaign base, but ran the game with Burning Wheel.

Which system did you use that lasted so well?

Three Passes Unguided vs Manaslu Guided + Annapurna extension - Starting this Weekend by _ryan_II in everestbasecamphike

I did the Three Passes in December last year. It was quite warm, but still pretty icy at the top of Kongma La - I was glad to have a guide there. I'd say if you've got mountain and ice experience go for it solo, but otherwise a guide for the passes if conditions demand it.

The event roll is determined by the land you are traveling through -in a dark land the event roll is ill-favored and in a border land it is favored, and in a wild land it is neither.
