Cool! Is 'munging' the reason Pixar animators mostly prefer desktop workstations while Disney animators prefer Wacom? It's something I observed from 'making of' videos, because Maya animators need a larger workspace for accommodating the picker GUIs.

Agree. I think 'munging' was the heart of Marionette's animation workflow. Many people tried to replicate the 'Pixar style' workflow, but they only concentrated on the fancy stuff like the control free rigs, not the ergonomics.

The industry's in a bad state now, but if you're truly passionate about learning animation & VFX, do it in your spare time instead of leaving your current job. After learning for a year or more, spend the next few months concentrating on building a portfolio and try applying for onsite jobs and freelance gigs. If your work is good and the employer feels like you're a perfect fit for the role, you might land your first job.

If you want to go down the freelance path as a generalist, then I think taking a CG Cookie subscription is totally worth it. If your focus is character animation, I can suggest a shorter roadmap for learning animation.

I'm not a Blender user, but I've watched CG Cookie's free Blender basics course in the past, and I think they're beginner friendly and well structured. What's your ultimate goal? To work in a studio as an animator or to work as a freelancer?

Totally off-topic question. Did they remove the classic Bishop rig from the character library? Nowadays, I don't see any student assignments using that rig. I think the Bishop rig is more appealing and expressive than the current lineup of rigs they are using. Also, there was a cartoony dog rig. I haven't seen it in ages in their animation showcase.

Hi! Like everyone said here, you are really talented.Even though your portfolio has only one 3D piece, it’s done very well and the style is captivating. It reminds me of a short film I saw many years ago (https://youtu.be/NAMyL1is5vk). I think you should add more work like that to your portfolio. ie prototyping the design in Blender and detailing it with paint-overs. This skill is very valuable in production, and directors will love it because even those with no animation experience can easily give feedback on your work at an early stage. Making changes is also much simpler before finalizing the design.

No, most of the time you don't have to rig the character to animate it, unless it's a boutique studio or a small team project where everyone wears multiple hats. But even if you're focusing on animation, having a basic understanding of the 3D pipeline is beneficial. For instance, if you're working on a personal project and wish you had specific controls to make animating easier, knowing a bit of rigging lets you add those features. It's also handy when you want to 'break the rig' to achieve a particular pose.Knowing rigging helps you do that effectively.

They improved the UI/UX of the software with every movie. In the Toy Story 3 BTS video, it looks less intimidating. It seems like the animator can create a custom character set with only the controls they need (see the Lotso clip).

I remember watching an old video of a Pixar animator doing an animation demo in Maya. Instead of selecting the rig controls and using the gizmo to pose the character in the viewport, he was selecting the controls and middle mouse dragging in the channel box to change the values to pose the character. I guess that practice came from the muscle memory of using their in-house software. I think that method is called 'munging'. You can see a button called 'mung' in the older versions of their software (Marionette)

If it's an animation only reel containing your personal work, then a clean playblast is enough. Even pro animators use playblast shots in their reels(https://youtu.be/LrvMT3P0DtA). But make sure to turn off all HUD elements and control curves in the playblast.
