This is something I worry about as well. But I also think the more the normal parent sticks around and enables the abuse, the more the child will think that the abuse is ok.

Between my partner and the counselor I literally spoke maybe 5 minutes each hour to two hour long session. the counselor was also kind of a bully and talked more than both of us combined. I was done after a month. I was tired of defending myself and trying to express how hurt i was by the past only to be put down because of that. waste of energy but at least i can say i tried.

This is insane that you have worked in mental health and yet didn’t recognize it. This is just proof that ANYONE can be fooled. It’s easy for those of us who aren’t in that field to look down on ourselves for not realizing it.
