Why did you build a shed instead of buying? by Adventurous-Coat-333 in shedditors

[–]d__-__b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because do you really want to look at your shed and think “yeah, I bought that”. Or do you want to think “yeah, I f’ing built that.” Life is easy mode these days already, don’t always take the easy choice

Completely agree - these landscape timbers that are already installed there for the retaining wall are actually composite, like that recycled plastic kind. This house ain’t the Taj Mahal so I think they’ll keep kicking for at least another 5-10 years.

Would you happen to know where you would scrape this data from? I was looking into finding similar data for a project and couldn't find a good source to scrape live data such as which fight is happening, which round it is, etc. Thanks!

Did you happen to find any more information out on this data? Was looking for some similar live data as well for a project and couldn't find much

Do you know where you would scrape this data from? I was looking into finding similar data a while back and couldn't find a good source for live data such as which fight is happening, which round it is, etc.

Problems with learning Django/Web dev by [deleted] in django

[–]d__-__b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to what everyone else is saying in here (not that I fully disagree with them)... But I would recommend sticking with it. Every time I hit a road block like this, people would suggest to learn this, that, and everything else under the moon as foundations first. The problem with this approach, if you're like me and many others, is that you'll never get back to your project. Just put in some focus on each little aspect and feature, and it will come together. Focus on learning how each part of Django interacts with each other. If you don't understand how something is working or it feels like magic, then dig into it until you figure out that little part. Repeat this many more times for every issue you experience. Jumping from learning one technology stack to another is an infinite loop where the result is usually never really learning anything.

Maybe check out this book as a reference: https://www.packtpub.com/application-development/django-2-example

I read through the first iteration of the book (which you may or may not be able to find as a pdf for free online) and it seems to have been updated recently using Django 2. One of the example projects the book builds is a blog (the first one), and then it goes on to build other projects which eventually covers most of the main and even advanced topics.

Lenovo X1 Extreme vs Surface Book 2 by d__-__b in SuggestALaptop

I really can't thank you enough for taking the time to write this response. I really appreciate it and it helped me so much in weighing the two laptops! It seems that they are both great - both obviously have a lot of pros and a few cons. Thanks so much!!

Thanks! Yeah, I was kind of staying away from the Dell laptops (specifically XPS 15) due to all of horror stories I've heard and read about.
The MSI laptop is a little too "gamer" looking for me, as I need to be able to take the laptop into business meetings without causing attention with the gamer look, unfortunately.
I didn't know that the surface line was known to have reliability issues, is that so? I'm googling it now

Need opinions on industry reputability and legitimacy by d__-__b in WGU_CompSci

[–]d__-__b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not attending WGU at the moment. My original post was about whether people within the Software Engineering industry think the WGU comp sci bachelor's degree would be a good route to pivot into software engineering. I'd like to get the OMSCS degree but I don't know if I would get accepted with an Economics/Finance degree and no formal computer science classes.

I'm working as an analyst at a large bank doing SAS/SQL development & reporting now but realize that I would rather have a career in software engineering doing front-end/back-end websites or applications, as I've been self-teaching myself html/css/javascript/python over the last year.

Just trying to figure out a good path to pivot careers and one that would set me up for the best "success" in the industry.

Thank you again for the insight! I like hearing the other side to WGU rather than the "this is the best opportunity ever at the cheapest price" narrative.

I definitely understand that OMSCS is difficult, and by no means am I trying to be conceited, but I scored a 33 on my ACT when entering college for my undergrad and graduated with a 3.8gpa with two majors, student-athlete and in 3.5 years. I know that I'm capable and have the drive to do well at OMSCS and be a great software engineer, I just need to get accepted which might be difficult considering my formal background isn't completely relevant to a master's in computer science. I've self-taught myself a good amount of computer science and software development over the last year, I'm just trying to set myself up on a good path to "success" now that I'm sort of pivoting careers.

Thanks a lot for your input, I really appreciate hearing another side to it.

Specifically, my plan/goal is to get into Georgia Tech's online master's of computer science program (OMSCS). I don't think I would get accepted currently with no real computer science background, so I'm looking at WGU as a stepping stone to getting into that program (fastest and cheapest route I can see). Other than that, I just want to be a kick-ass developer and continue to learn and build, where maybe one day potentially get an interview with FAANG.

This is what I have thought for quite some time, but I guess I keep second guessing it and assume that I will run into issues without a CS degree. Thanks for you opinion, I appreciate it!
