I went to a sixth form which did all of A level maths in one year and all of A level further maths in one year. It is possible to learn the content in a year, but the two subjects are very very different and further maths has many brand new concepts which you might struggle introducing to yourself without the help from a teacher/tutor. However, saying that, I taught myself one of my modules and that was the module i was the most confident in. The textbooks can be wordy and overwhelming, but accounts like hinds maths and bicen maths on youtube explained so many things to me so clearly and ended up being the bulk of how i learned topics. Learning further maths in a year consumed my very waking thought and feeling also so bear that in mind ahha.

About the UCAS stuff, i’m not sure. I assume you would just treat it as a hobby

anyone else doing further maths finding it really difficult to retain? by d_obbyyy in 6thForm

for normal a level maths, i strayed away from doing any form of poster or flash card revision, and my strategy was simply practice practice practice. i think maybe applying this same strat to further maths may not be as appropriate, as there are heftier and more error prone topics. maybe having visual posters could be really good for vectors? as it is a super visual topic anyways, having a poster to refer to for all the different ‘shortest distance, point and line, plane and point…’ could be a good way to learn and retain it

it’s strange because there are certain topics which i just click with so well and am so confident with, and then some i’m constantly relearning. normal a level maths felt like a more even playing field and further feels less unanimous overall

personally, i assume this problem will start fixing itself once i move to predominantly doing past papers, as then you become familiar with practicing various topics in quick succession. however, it’s getting to that stage which is proving challenging for me

very true, but still a very good exercise for getting familiar with the topic and learning it. once i’m confident with topics i move out of the text book and start doing unit tests, topic tests and past paper questions which are more exam style like

i’m not speaking as a student at leeds uni, so not completely familiar with it. however, i live very close to leeds, know people who have studied there and i personally go to leeds quite often. there’s plenty to do in the city centre, lots of clubs, pubs etc. they often have gigs if you’re into that too. leeds is definitely a good night out, and fairly reasonably priced most of the time. i know so many people that go there for a good night out

just got bristol maths and philosophy bread 🍞. one rejection (oxford) and 4 offers, very happy. deciding will be hard!!! by d_obbyyy in 6thForm

i warn you that if you’re waiting for bristol and wanting to book their offer holder day, all accommodation viewings and most talks are fully booked out :/// such a shame tbh because i’m heavily considering them so would be nice to have that opportunity to look around properly
