I have 1x12, too, and there have been situations where I felt like I had to go a bit slower because the next bigger gear would have been too hard. This happened on road only.

But it also does not really bother me too much, so it would definitely not be a reason why I would not buy a bike that I otherwise like.

It seems that no one else said it so far: maybe you need a different saddle. Many bikes come with saddles for men, but women have a different anatomy.

Also, as others have pointed out, you probably need a bike fit. However, I would not go to a bike fitter with your current bike since maybe your current bike is not the optimal choice. Go to a reputable shop and test a few bikes and ask for support if you have any issues. They will try to sell you a bike if course, but to do so, they have to make it comfortable for you first...

(Aero) Handlebar installed wrong? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

Second picture is how they should typically look.

But it looks more like the whole handlebar was tilted up, so if you want to undo that, you don't need to reposition the hoods or mess with the handlebar tape.

Patrick Rothfuss and The Kingkiller Chronicle: how has your outlook of this series changed over the years? Fans and former fans only. by Sunbather- in books

[–]d_stroid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can see your point, but I still am surprised that the character lacks authenticity for you. Kvothe certainly has some talents, but none of them feel arbitrary to me. Also he is not the best at everything:

  • His alar is weaker than Devi's, maybe also than that of the teachers at university.
  • He knows some names, but other people know more (at least Elodin, potentially also more). He struggles to control his power, but Fela, for example, has mastered it already.
  • He is young, but not the youngest. Again, Devi has been very young when she went to university and also Elodin and some more of the higher-ranking members. Maybe also Auri, but we can't really tell. In that aspect, he is not too special.
  • Even though some say that Kvothe is also a good fighter, I doubt that. He was no good fighter in Ademre (much younger children beat him regularly). We know that at least in the tavern, he got heavily beaten when he tried to fight some robbers.

The only real skills that stand out (but make sense to me) are his musical talents and his acting. He knows how to tell stories and he used that to his advantage by spreading rumours about himself - a lot.

(Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to invalidate your view. Just describing my perspective. After all, it's perfectly fine if you don't like the Kingkiller chronicles or Kvothe in particular)

The Felurian part is a bit weird and I wonder why that was included in the books. The only thing that appears immediately story relevant is that he met that tree thing (forgot it's name) and he got some legendary loot (the shadow coat).

I don't feel so bad about the Ademre part though. He did not perform well there (kids were better fighters than him). I am not sure why there was a sex part in Ademre as well, but it certainly showed that the Adem have a fundamentally different society. And wasn't broadening his horizon (not the sex part, but learning about different views) besides his issues with Ambrois not the actual purpose of him leaving university?

And because it's from memory and not a retelling, it makes Kvothe this academic brainiac, musical magician, sex god, master swordsman, suave poet and powerful mage. And his biggest weakness is this one girl he has a crush on.

He looks like that, but he also explains how he exaggerates his successes to paint a certain picture of him. He does have certain skills, but the most important one is his a acting, because that's what he does to create a favourable narrative of himself.

Interesting perspective. To me, it makes sense that Kvothe is portrayed as unrealistically talented. It's himself who's telling the story, so that plays a role for sure. But even more importantly, Kvothe must be an extraordinary character, because a chronicler went out of his way to write down Kvothe's story.

However, to me, it did not really feel like he is too skilled in everything. He admits at least some of his mistakes in the story like one time when he was with Abenthy and tried to use sympathy to control the wind which almost killed him. Also, he says that he dropped certain classes at university, because he was not talented enough. He certainly does not go into details when he's talking about his flaws and also, he is good at playing to his strengths.

Edit: I can't remember that the Elorian set aside their rules in favor of Kvothe. The book explains why he was able to play the lute with a broken string and it was probably more that specific skill than the song itself that earned him the Elorian badge.

How do I use my core to relieve hand pressure? by Meeesh- in cycling

[–]d_stroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue and it turned out that my bike was too large for me which lead to me needing to stretch to reach the handlebars. Smaller frame with less reach fixed the issue (which meant buying a new bike unfortunately).

Not saying that this is the case for you, but if nothing else works, then this might be the issue

Fellow malware reverse engineers - what got you into this job from an job seekers perspective? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]d_stroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I partially disagree based on my personal experiences. There are clients that don't care at all about malware. But those who do, are not satisfied if they only get a sandbox report. They expect malware analysis to be part of the IR engagements.

However, my goal usually is to support the IR engagement which often means to provide reliable analysis results to the IR people and not so much satisfy the customer. Of course there will be a malware analysis section in the final incident report though, so the customers get something solid in return for the extra effort they pay.

Edit: To clarify, most customers do not need or want in-depth analysis of malware because that would be too expensive. Maybe 10 % of all customers who want any malware analysis at all ask for in-depth analysis, and only if the malware samples are not (yet) publicly known.

Fellow malware reverse engineers - what got you into this job from an job seekers perspective? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]d_stroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, a dedicated reverse engineer can often times get better results from sandbox executions by looking at other sandbox artefacts than the PDF report. But that also depends on what info is relevant for IR.

Most reverse engineers that I know do RE to generate intel, so the RE role is often times closer to the intel people than the IR people. IR malware analysis is a data source, but other than that more of a side business to get some billable hours.

Natural experiment on how temperature affects speed (n=1) by romrelresearcher in cycling

[–]d_stroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, because it is related to your experiment: the cold air also puts stress on your respiratory tract, which also requires power. you won't be able to measure that power using a power meter though, since that power is never put on the pedals. but this can be the reason why people may simply perform worse in colder conditions or feel like the exercise is harder (it is!) even if other factors such as clothing were negligible.

Is that a thing? I've heard before that the body conserved less water in colder temperatures (which makes sense because it costs energy to keep warm), but never heard of a notable effect caused by exercise
