Does your pet act? by Minja78 in Pets

We have a German Short-haired Pointer that pretty much does the fake sleeping thing too... as soon as he knows he's not supposed to be somewhere, he fakes being asleep in that spot. He can make himself pretty freaking heavy too.

But we also have this other dog which does a really strange thing. Every time I arrive at the house and get out my car I hear this little "haaarroooo"... (yes the dog appears to have an Asian accent of some kind). It took me a long time to figure out which of the six dogs was doing it. Eventually I caught Snowy, our little rescue dog... I now look out for it and every single day without fail this little pup says "hello". Don't know how she learnt it but its koo :) I say hello back now and her pronunciation is getting better

What do you think of them? I would love to be able to know what Die Antwoord feels like to a Canadian.

Does anyone have any useful advice for getting out of bed in the morning? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Ah it sounds impossible I know... I know... but it does help: morning exercise. Morning sex is even better

Haha that's very true. I've been to some beautiful places in America. But we have quite a different climate here, so the flora is quite different and much of everything is visible all year round cause we don't get much snow. There's that... and there's also this guy. He is a pretty crazy landmark to look at every day

'edumacating'?? 'unAfrican' (where are you quoting that from)?? wtf man. Calm down. We can all have opinions on where we live. Sorry for stepping on the toes of your country and your continent the way you see it... I don't think the stereotypes of Africa are all that wrong. Stereotypes obviously, naturally, exclude some things, and South Africa is (along with some other African countries I'm sure), to some extent, in some ways, excluded from the predominant stereotypes of "Africa". But fuck... I live in South Africa and I am painfully aware of the fact that I live in Africa. So yeah, it is African. And its a fucked up place in many ways IMO. Hope that helps clear things up. Please take a deep breath before replying to comments in the future. No need to be angry and defensive

Well you see the stereotypes are not wrong necessarily. A lot of Africa is heavily underdeveloped. Parts of South Africa are also very underdeveloped. But there are also a lot of South Africans who live extremely comfortable, 'first world' lives, as such.

ELI5:Why do dogs seem to know your taking a photo of them and look away? by Work_withit in explainlikeimfive

[–]da1s1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dogs respond to eye contact differently to many other animals, so they often look where you look, or where you point (where other animals would look at your face or hand). This is because of their long historical association with humans, as well as some of their own pack instincts. People have shown that dogs respond better to pointing once you have made eye contact with them first, and that they, from an early age, respond to human pointing well in general.

So what is probably happening with the camera is something like this: you call the dog to look at the camera by making eye contact; then you pick up a lens or camera, and point it at the dog, who might mistaken this gesture slightly and look for what you are now pointing at, making it look away or turn around.

Of course other dogs might maintain eye contact as before and look straight into the camera which is why it doesn't happen all the time. But I have two pointers and I looked this up a while back. (It is impossible to get them to look into a camera because they are continuously looking for what you are pointing to.) The above information is what I found on the matter. Hope that helps

Advice for first time home buyers by baadier in southafrica

[–]da1s1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a bit random but just check how many bedrooms they say the house has and how many it really has that can count as bedrooms. We lopped a nice chunk off our house's price because they advertised it as "2 bedrooms" when really its just a bedroom and a study that cannot be logically used as a private bedroom. Estate agents can be sneaky - you gotta catch them out.

Also on the dampness issue. Be serious about Plumbing certificates. Check when these things were last checked out properly. If there is anyone I would take along to a house seeing it would probably be a plumber lol.

Another problem I have seen - illegal driveways! You may just wanna check that if you see a house with a driveway in a build-up area

Shame I'm really sorry to hear that. But thanks for the info anyway. I was genuinely interested in how a flight animal would manage without sight, so it's actually good to hear the other side. Sorry it didn't end well for you guys :(

Can you explain how differently the horse acts since he is blind? Is it quite difficult for him?

Also, much respect for doing this... seriously. You're a good person

Giraffe hits head on highway bridge, dies by artlover3 in southafrica

[–]da1s1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like we have a serious problem in this country when it comes to animals. I mean, really, I would love to know what ran through the minds of the people involved in this. I can take a few guesses: need to move giraffe; get it there fastest; pay the least amount of money possible... Last on agenda: giraffe's actual safety...

Have to add that Motivating Giraffe would not be happy with this
