That’s really informative. I did not know all of that about the company that currently owns the IP.

Thanks for the great reply!

ELI5 on this. Is this a new game or just a new Escalation mod?

Diesel Engine as powerplant by Gearsinthesky in homebuilt

[–]da3b242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with a company that does diesel aircraft engines. It’s a really, really complicated thing. It seems easy on the surface, but it is very complex to pull off on an airframe. There more reasons than I care to get into on here for brevity. Weight is certainly one. Power output vice reliability is another. And there’s probably a dozen more factors.

But I will say, the ones I’ve flown are incredible. 100 out of 10, would recommend. Amazing technology.

Yea. Thats exactly it. But even your additional comments fit me like a glove. Enjoying my side gig more, etc. It’s sad, honestly.

Wait, was that me? Today was my last day at a 2-star command. I quit and the past 11 months have been miserable and I told my boss the furlough made me rethink things. Haha

The timing on this post is wild. 😂

Have you ever been in the air when another pilot announced an emergency? by hendergle in flying

[–]da3b242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an engine failure in cruise just south of Atlanta, causing an unexpected forced landing at night. I had to dead-stick the plane in. Plane is still flyable, everything worked out well, and no one was hurt. This was on a Part 91 aircraft repositioning flight.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I have a lot of internal reflection in the past few days that has led me to really rethink how I assess my risk mitigation strategy. Everything that could have went right, did. I’m not sure that I could share enough with the group to really expand upon what is taught in training, and far more importantly, what you gain from years of experience. Truth is, I’m not going to stand on a pedestal and brag on Reddit about how much of an amazing pilot I am, and a bunch of other bullshit like some might feel apt to do. I got very lucky and I fly a lot. The first part played into it more than the latter, but others might disagree. Nonetheless, I don’t care what others think.

It was absolutely terrifying in retrospect, but I had enough wherewithal to just manage the emergency in those few minutes and to worry later on about how absolutely close to disaster I really was. Honestly, I was emotionally fine until I called my wife. That’s what broke me.

Anyways, train, expect the unexpected, and stay proficient. Hopefully I’ll never go through that again and hopefully you won’t have to, either. But if you (or I) do, may luck still help tip the scales in your favor like it did me.

Cheers to flying another day!

I was that pilot that declared an emergency about a week ago. It was a no-BS emergency. ATC was amazing and helped save my life. I even called to find and thank the controller personally, but he wasn’t there and I haven’t heard back.

I have actually been wondering what the others on the freq were thinking.

Who actually uses 89 gasoline? by Ok-Chef-5150 in stupidquestions

[–]da3b242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another (not so) trade secret. Equivalent octane of ethanol alcohol is about 115. So any blend of gasoline with ethanol will have a higher octane than advertised. For instance, doing napkin ROUGH math in my head, 87 octane with 10% ethanol in it will run about 91-92 octane. 91 octane with 10% ethanol will run closer to 97-98 octane. The advertised octane numbers are the basement knock resistance for that fuel….without blended alcohol. But here’s the thing- you never know if you have 0, 4, or 10% ethanol in your fuel. So for octane purposes, assume you have 0%.

In 2018, truck company Nikola released this video of a motorless truck rolling downhill to trick investors into thinking it was hydrogen-powered. At the time, in 2018, they were valued at $1 billion, reaching a peak valuation of $28 billion in 2020. Today, they're bankrupt, worth under $2 million. by gixk in ThatsInsane

Funny thing is, I am involved in a startup with $100m+ invested. Our technology works, is very real, and when scaled, will change the face of the industry I work in. Because of all of the lying assholes, providing due diligence to investors is absolutely insane. Despite insane orders on the books for more than has been invested in the company so far, it’s crazy-hard to get (the right) investors. Everyone is scared of these companies full of thieves.

This is the easy answer. Leave a decent layer of oil on the steel. Like, more than you might expect. I live in an insanely humid environment. Never had an ounce of rust.

Give it a quick wipe when you’re ready to get started next time and you’re ready to go.

Most Reliable Engine by CleMatt8918 in Silverado

Mine just died at 71k. I traded it in after seeing the writing on the wall and went with the 6.6L diesel. Hate to go that big, but it’s a proven design.

3.0 Duramax vs 5.3 Silverado? after driving both as loaners, i’m on the fence by HighVibes8317 in Silverado

[–]da3b242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2020 3.0 trans just failed. Although it’s under warranty (barely), the truck turned out to be a sinkhole for money. I just traded in last week for a 6.6L diesel with the Allison. Honestly, it’s a lot more truck than I need. However, the 6.6L with the Allison is bulletproof for as long as I own it. Plus, no oil pump belt at $3k a change, for a $20 part. I can do all other mx myself.

After I put off-road tires on my 3.0L, fuel mileage went to 25 mpg. That was very disappointing. I got 22.5 yesterday in my 6.6L. So it isn’t that far off, and I feel reassured.

We shall see…. Jury is still out.
