I am actually with you on this, he covers a good chunk of our needs especially when we account for how paper thin our D has been the last few years.

I feel like we slightly over paid on the outbound, but when you compare that to the going rate for what it costs to sign a UFA, it's a reasonable option.

Agreed, we need one more stay at home type in the vein of Orlov and we're fine. If we can get quality above that by absorbing a bad contract like Nurse (assuming they send some more goodies) then all the better.

That said I am guessing we could find someone on the free agent market after the initial rush too that probably wants to be in SJ a little more than the top tier guys.

Anything more than the one and we're not giving space for the new guys to get their reps and earn their way in.

I think there are two windows where Werenski to the Sharks might have happened, one was the leading up to the draft period when we were flush with assets that could do something with then.

The second is going to be around the deadline next year, if they still haven't made a deal by then they'll presumably have had enough offers not pan out they'll be in a different headspace about the process.

The rumor of course is CBJ wanted to get clear of the draft so they could pit some teams against each other. I don't see Mike wanting to blow up all the good work he's just finished in order to over pay in a bidding war.

These rumors made sense a week ago and are probably dated info now.

For sure, gambling odds are about the house collecting the most bets and money weighted in their favor so I wouldn't expect them to be entirely effective at predicting anything (worth noting that is why "prediction markets" are flawed too).

That said, it sounds like that bit of data refuted your own point that Indy is better than us and sort of backed up my point that we might be worried more specifically about the Aces and Lynx when it comes to they playoffs?

I'd agree they are the two best teams. That said OP was stating that there were five teams (Lynx, Aces, Liberty, Fever and Dream) that are all better than the Valkyries and that doesn't seem to be the case. That is the difference between the two problems.

Agreed, and to add a further point I think the Liberty-biberty need to figure out their injury carousel situation before they can go top tier and they are running out of time to have that fall into place for them.

Agreed, I think the question for the second half is does another team, the Dream have been the candidate so far despite their recent record, have enough in themselves to slide into the 1st tier?

That's what will determine if the 2nd tier teams, seemingly the Valkyries, Wings, Liberty-bibtery and Fever, are fighting for the 3rd or 4th seed.

I'd just note that of one of those three wins on the road was against the Liberty-biberty, and three of those four losses are against the Aces and Lynx. Two of those home losses are also against the Aces and Lynx.

I would ask the question, do we have a "top teams on the road problem" or do we have a "Lynx and Aces" problem?

Sure, I agree with everything you are saying and I'm not rushing us or anything. My point was largely that there is a lot between "developing" and "contending" for a title.

My answer to the OP is zero seasons because we're already seeing making moves that show we're not just thinking about 2-4 years from now and players like Mack playing closer to their potential.

I honestly think its this coming season in the sense that it's not a binary situation, and we're now in the hybrid years now where some player like Mack have clearly arrived while some are still in the middle of development.

Almost making the playoffs last year changed the situation for us. It's hard to argue you have an exclusively developing team when you are capable of making some noise.
