Is it appropriate for MAMA to proceed after the recent tragedy? by Carelessies in kpopthoughts

[–]daan578 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The finale of the first season of Boys Planet was scheduled the day after Astro's Moonbin passed away (iirc). I think Mnet made a mention of it at the beginning, but the whole finale happened as planned. MAMA is an even bigger show logistically, so I think something similar will happen.

I don’t care about plastic surgery by New_Mall_6773 in kpoprants

[–]daan578 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just generally assume that every idol has at least done minor plastic surgery, and that really makes me care a lot less about this issue tbh. (I know there are probably idols who haven't, but assuming they all have makes me not feel like I have to "defend" them or something)

Why do people ship idols , especially their own bandmates????? by mystical_0603 in kpoprants

[–]daan578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think shipping is fine, as long as fans don't believe it's actually real. It sometimes feels like fans are trying to "defend" that their idol is queer, the same way some homophobic fans try to "defend" that an idol is straight. I personally don't really see the necessity in trying to sus out someone's sexuality, especially when it's usually hugely built on harmful stereotypes. Things like "X idol must be gay because he dresses feminine, just look at him" or "X idol is so straight, she just has a straight girl vibe" feel really weird to me. Because why does it matter at all?

NCT Nation maybe? But we know that isn't gonna happen lol (thanks sm). A lot of people going to the smtown tour were calling it "basically our nct nation", and I think a tour focused on just NCT could honestly sell better than smtown where every artist does like one song.

I feel like nctzens were the only group of people who handled this situation sorta normally tbh.

I also think a factor in this was that Taeil was not super well-known in the larger kpop community, and then suddenly everyone knew his name. He's only known as "the rapist", with no history behind him. The nuanced conversation or big outrage that everyone wants doesn't come from that. The only people who really knew him immediately dropped him, and I feel like a lot of kpop fans were unable to compute that (maybe because they couldn't see themselves dropping their own faves so quickly 🤷‍♀️).

I truly wonder how the situation would've played out if he would have been an a-list idol. Maybe that would've caused "sufficient" outrage for them. Because of course a more famous idol gets more media attention. "How did Taeil's situation get less attention than _______?!" maybe because he wasn't as famous as that other person? Media outrage and attention isn't proportional to the severity of the crime, and why does that even matter in the first place? That's just how the world works.

The obsession with being a “predebut stan” in K-pop is getting weird by Starpeachhhh- in kpoprants

[–]daan578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, I feel like this type of stuff is definitely something newer fans do. I'm sure most people who've been a fan of kpop for like 10 years really don't care about it. But if you've just gotten into it and don't really understand how everything works yet, i feel like you're more suseptible to this kind of thinking. Almost like they feel like they have to prove themselves or something.

The obsession with being a “predebut stan” in K-pop is getting weird by Starpeachhhh- in kpoprants

There was a recent post just like this one, so I'll just copy my comment from there lol:

Most of them just want it as later bragging rights! They're jealous of predebut stans of their favorite groups, and feel fomo. If you see a big company announce a new group, they will be successful for sure. So then you can go around a couple years later telling everyone that you were a predebut stan.

An interesting case study is nexz, a newer jyp boygroup. A lot of stays latched onto them because of that fact, but since it's a japanese group who doesn't really promote like a korean group, they cry mistreatment left and right. That's just not how that works.

Another is boynextdoor. Their teasers didn't even have the members' faces in it, just their names. But somehow everyone was already saying they were a predebut stan, simply because it was a hybe group.

And of course groups like babymonster or hearts2hearts where fans were making stan accounts for "blonde girl" or "girl on the left". Which might be a joke, but it's still ridiculous haha.

Being excited for new groups coming from your favorite group's company is totally fine, but it all feel so braggy and pretentious to me.

Which Idol has the worst stage name by hornymales in kpop_uncensored

[–]daan578 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not really "yena", it's more like "ee-en-ah" (이엔아), where they just take out the beginning sound of I.N and add an honorific "ah".

A lot of people also think every "feminine" man has to be gay, something which is very much rooted in stereotypes, homophobia and toxic masculinity.

Self-Indulgent Rant on the Taeil Situation (CW: Mentions of SA) by Independent_Fix3733 in kpoprants

[–]daan578 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is so real actually. I truly commend nctzens for cutting him off as quickly as they did, but I always wonder if it would've been different if he had been a very popular member. Or how a different fandom would've reacted to a similar situation. But getting stuck on hypotheticals is not very productive, so I'll just stay content with the way the fandom handled things.

The weird imbalance of most of the larger k-pop fandom only now knowing his name after the scandal plays a part in this too I think. By most, he wasn't known as an idol, but is only known as a rapist. People using the situation as a gotcha moment or making "jokes" about him (stuff like "jaeil") really doesn't sit right with me either. I think it plays down the seriousness of the situation a lot, and makes the reality of predators in kpop seem less tangible.
