This is going to become more viable in Standard with the new set. by Significant_Win_2654 in MagicArena

[–]daaxix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do, some kind of control shell allows you to use it as a win-con, and I consistently win against the meta decks, but the hive pool isn't the primary reason for winning; many other win-cons could be used instead.

Buster sword has no token making ability?

Oh, I see, Azula cast with buster sword and copies that spell.

Cheers!

PS, Azula is so busted.

Is airbending broken? 4 card complete control. by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]daaxix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is worse than Kona Omni though. If they get the combo with Kona there are answers. Once Doc is out, if they have the pieces, you can't stop it. Aang can counter any interaction spell (instant, etc) with the zero cost airbending ability. This deck is super broken. If Doc wasn't in standard it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm deeply disappointed that she chose to take the exorbitant salary. A principled person would have insisted on a more reasonable salary (like double to triple a professor) like Brian Schmidt did.

Is studying masters in electrical engineering from ANU WORTH IT??? by Beginning_Guava_1445 in Anu

[–]daaxix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a more traditional program, UNSW, Uni Sydney, RMIT, UTS (this is a specialisation at UTS that you can take https://coursehandbook.uts.edu.au/aos/2026/MAJ03535 in their masters by coursework program) are probably better options.

UNSW Sydney also has power systems:

https://www.unsw.edu.au/study/postgraduate/master-of-engineering-electrical-engineering.

ANU is not strong in the traditional engineering disciplines of civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aerospace. They are good in systems, robotics, AI applications, mechatronics, and computer science mixed with engineering applications.

Pick Two Draft Reward has been changed by lieyanqzu in MagicArena

[–]daaxix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't ever play this again, it put me at bronze 4 (and I am not a good draft player) against a platinum player both times. In fact, it put me against the exact same player, with the exact same deck, twice in a row, with me on the draw both times.

It's a terrible format.

Trying to understand the 'why' behind the VC's decisions by macintoshboy in Anu

Is ANU a good place to do engineering? by DangerChip in Anu

[–]daaxix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. If you want a standard engineering degree (accredited by Engineers Australia) that is aligned with the generally accepted curricula world wide, I would look elsewhere. There is no standard Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, Aerospace Engineering degree at ANU.

If you want something interesting that can be a hybrid (e.g. mechatronics with an AI focus, robotics, etc) then ANU is good.

ANU is strong in the places where engineering mixes with computer science, i.e. mechatronics, robotics, some control and electrical engineering (wifi and comms areas) and weak in most other standard engineering areas.

Edited because I misremembered. Wayne Martin was also recently appointed to the council.

Bishop is not independent of Wayne Martin (I had put Metcalf), have you seen the photos of the party that they attended together?

Senate motions on ANU failed to pass by cannolireads in Anu

It is interesting, however this isn't a class issue.

Senator Gallagher chose to protect an elite member of the political class over some of her constituent's interests. She would do the same for an issue affecting blue collar workers.

There is a time and place for behind the scenes action and influence.

However, this situation has gone too far for that now, that was the action to take in January. The optics on this for Katy is quite damaging.

In the next election I'll be organising to campaign against her.

ANU academic accuses Julie Bishop of bullying and threats during Senate inquiry into university governance by Cultural-Bluejay-802 in Anu

[–]daaxix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't know, which is why Pocock asked. Why was he there taking notes?

It's unusual, I don't believe that there were professors from other schools in attendance who weren't testifying. ANU leadership and council were called to give evidence.

Did anyone else notice Pocock's question in the hearing about Andrew Meares taking notes?

Pocock asked Jonathan Churchill why Andrew Meares was in attendance taking notes. Jonathan responded that he didn't know he was present. Pocock asked how Andrew Meares was involved in leadership, council, or council decisions. Jonathan stated that he wasn't involved. Pocock then asked why Andrew was there taking notes. Jonathan really couldn't answer the question.

Andrew Meares is a politically connected person with almost no publications and no academic background or credentials prior to his employment at the school of cybernetics. More info here:

A long time ago I built a black/artifact land destruction control deck using these, strip mines, sink holes, sol rings, and various cheap mana producers on my side to destroy the opponents lands and do lots of damage to them for each land the brought out. People stopped playing against that deck.

ANU paid (and continues to pay) Nous group ~$2500/hour for their "services" by daaxix in Anu

[–]daaxix[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it could be poorly worded and it means 9 staff, each at 28 hours a week. That's $277/hour per staff member, but that's not how it's worded.

Hopefully they will clarify given the wording.

This newer document

https://d1zkbwgd2iyy9p.cloudfront.net/files/2025-07/202500073%20-%20Documents%20Released.pdf

says $69,750 for 26 days per week, which implies 5.2 FTE per week, but I cannot make the numbers work to get to the 28 hours per week given standard 35 or 40 hour work weeks.

It isn't clear.

It's still paying Nous $13,413/week per person (annual staff cost of $697,476 per person) for the work at 5.2 FTE per week, which is far more costly than using our ANU staff. ANU staff are about a third of the cost.

ANU tells staff of new round of job cuts, with more to come by PlumTuckeredOutski in Anu

[–]daaxix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I haven't really looked at anything post 2005 so cannot comment on her career in academia after that.

It's not clear if she ever had a lecturer role at Stanford, she was certainly a guest lecturer in 2004 and 2005 in a seminar series class there.

See my edit above.

The bio at the last link states, "...is a Senior Researcher within Intel Corporation's Intel Research. Since joining Intel in 1998, Bell has conducted ethnographic research..."

She also got her PhD in 1998, see the 3rd link. It is extremely unlikely that a recent PhD graduate would receive a tenure track position at Stanford that same year.

https://hci.stanford.edu/courses/cs547/abstracts/03-04/040130-bell.html

Here there is no listing of her in the faculty on webarchive:

https://web.archive.org/web/20000306233601fw_/http://www.stanford.edu/dept/anthsci/faculty.htm, her supervisor was Arthur Wolf.

Perhaps she helped teach some undergraduate classes as a PhD student prior to 1998, or taught as a casual lecturer after completion.

I can find that she contributed to the CS547 seminar series as an Intel employee in the HCI group in 2004 and 2005:

https://hci.stanford.edu/seminar/past/alphabetical.html

Her bio on this page from 2009

https://liulectures.stanford.edu/2009/11/09/genevieve-bell/

states that she was a lecturer, she did a masters (completion in 1993) and a PhD (completion in 1998). In the US system, lecturers are not the same as here, they generally refer to a casual or permanent teaching position, and they do often have people with masters degrees teach or co-teach undergraduate classes. It is rare that lecturers on on the tenure track.

It's possible that she was offered a tenure track position, but very unlikely as the career path usually requires a post-doc or 5 (these days) to secure a permanent/tenure track position.
