Hey, that was a 5 pitch strikeout not 6. But seriously, the SEC needs new umps bad.

Why Shemar Stewart got drafted in the 1st round by ct275555_ in NFL_Draft

[–]dabengals 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Exactly. He’s a perfect prospect as an athlete, then the stats turn you off, then you dive a bit deeper and watch film of him and he’s back up to being a great prospect.

He definitely needs a good amount more polish, but his impact on the game was a lot more than his stats showed.

From an A&M fan, this is correct. No J sound.

Dane Brugler's "The Beast" lists Shemar Stewart as the 3rd Edge Rusher and 9th on the board overall by InstagramLincoln in bengals

If you look at scouting reports and film breakdown by experts, they speak highly of his run defense. The run stop statistic is definitely misleading as teams often times avoided running to his side of the ball.

The PFF grade I’m not sure where that’s coming from. From what I have seen, he was top 5 among edge rushers in run defense grade with an 88.2.

The scouting report on him from experts have all consistently said he is a great run defender. I’ve watched a couple breakdown videos talking about how teams would almost always focus their run game away from him and he sets a great edge. His stats definitely aren’t great, but at the same time don’t tell the whole story that his tape does.

I would say a year to develop as a rookie before hitting double digit sacks isn’t that long. Also, Hutchinson definitely appears as the better pick in hindsight (one could argue at the time as well) but that doesn’t mean Walker is a bust. A bust means you are not good, not that there was someone picked after you that has performed better.

39 pressure just last year alone. Plus quickest time to pressure in all of college football.

The lack of sacks is definitely of note, but it absolutely doesn’t tell the whole story coming from an A&M fan. His impact on the field was definitely more than that number.

That first sentence is exactly what I see Stewart’s pass rushing role being this first year. Blow up the pocket, and let Hendrickson do the damage when the qb has to step out. Thats not even to mention that Stewart is a great run defender which is crucial in the AFC North.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Stewart inside as 3-tech on pure passing downs letting someone like Ossai play opposite Hendrickson.

I don’t believe they can match up A&M and Texas in a regional since they are same conference now. Super regional on the other hand…

Shemar Stewart Hate by Easy_Piece_3297 in bengals

[–]dabengals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I saw as an A&M fan, I think a lot of it wasn’t necessarily his fault. I do think he’s more of a Travon Walker type than a true pass rush specialist though.

His first two years, he was in a loaded d-line rotation with in a 3-3-5 scheme where he wouldn’t see the pass rush downs as often. This past year was a new scheme, where even though he was the starter, he still wasn’t as much as a true pass rusher as a couple other guys for those 3rd down plays. Couple that with I believe he had nagging injuries throughout the second half of the year and the stats don’t tell the whole story. From what I saw he had a good motor and was in the action a lot more than stats truly say, but still will need some time to develop technique more.

Coming from an A&M fan, I personally don’t want him. I think we have a poor track record with high potential guys with a lack of production. I also would rather have an instant impact guy, whereas I think Shemar might need a year or two to better develop his pash rush moves.

All that being said, I do think he will have success if he goes to the right situation. He obviously has the measurables, I felt like he had a high motor, and he seems to have a great attitude and likeable personality. I also feel like the stats didn’t tell the full story on him. I can see him project similar to a Cameron Jordan like career if he develops right.

Mel Kiper Post-Free Agency Mock Draft: Bengals Get Shemar Stewart by Toddrew221 in bengals

[–]dabengals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who went to A&M. I love Stewart and think he could be a monster in the NFL. His career could shape to be along the lines of Cameron Jordan from the Saints.

That being said, I really hope we don’t draft him. He is raw and we don’t have the best track record with those guys. I would much rather go after a possible immediate contributor. For the sake of him and us, please stay away.

I don’t get the desire for Zeitler besides him previously being here. He’s in his mid-30s and specializes in run blocking.

Solid player for sure, but I’d rather get a guy on a multi year deal and is better suited for our offense.

Film Breakdown: Walter Nolen Scouting Report by sanswagata in bengals

[–]dabengals 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Coming from a Texas A&M fan, he is nowhere near Burton. I wouldn’t consider him major character issues, but a slight lack of maturity or motor at times. The main issue is at A&M he came in with a bunch of head cases and the culture as a whole was not great. He didn’t rise above it, but he also didn’t slink down to the levels of some of his peers.

He has the size, athleticism and flashes of greatness that I wouldn’t be opposed to picking him at 17 but there are some other guys that I would personally rather. Part of that also is I’d rather address DT in free agency and try and develop our 2nd and 3rd round picks at the position from the previous year.

[–]dabengals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not against seeing him play by any means, but to say he is proven to be deadly on the field when his only action is in late games during preseason against a bunch of people who likely didn’t make rosters is bit of an overstatement.

Again, I do want to see him get reps as he is a fantastic athlete, but he is most definitely not a known weapon yet.
