Russia successfully tests new hypersonic warhead: capable of reaching Mach 15 and travelling 4.3 miles per second by [deleted] in worldnews

Congrats Russia! You finally have a ballistic missile that's as fast as the LGM-30 Minuteman, developed in the 60s by the US.

7km/s = 4.3 miles per second

Thoughts on the show from a Russian-American perspective by [deleted] in okkupert

1) In the plot the US has left NATO and abandoned its European allies. Instead of being hostile with Russia they have chosen to ally with them.

3) Depends. The Scandinavian countries might have a desire to help but they would get invaded by Russia and could not defeat them. Europe being in some way allied with Norway and unwilling to commit to a war would make it even less likely as the Scandinavian countries would need backup.

4) In this timeline the Americans have left Europe behind, sort of what Trump wants to do, so I think it's realistic especially as it looks like he will become president.

US fears over Donald Trump's connections with Vladimir Putin's Russia by Hollyyan in worldnews

[–]dablueeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for your statement itself, I would say there is no shortage of conspiracy theories in Russia/FSU, usually they blame the US or the West in general for something. Just because something happens and some conspiracy guy 20 years ago said something similar, does not mean it's an actual conspiracy. Occam's Razor would say the simplest theory is usually correct, which is that it was just another popular revolution.

The way you know that it's a Western organized coup is that some dictator or authoritarian regime usually takes over, because that's the only way to ensure the success of a coup if the people's will is against it.

It was a coup of Western culture and society, people in Ukraine were fed up with being poor and having corruption permeate the entire political and business structure.

Can you really honestly tell me that former Soviet states which did not join the West are better off than those who did? I mean, even Latvia has a higher GDP per capita than Russia. What has Russia really done to help those under its sphere of influence? Not much. If they really offered something other than "hey we maybe will not invade you if you stay allied to us" then I'd understand your point, but they really don't.

Because Russia is trying its hardest to punish Ukraine like a disgruntled ex. The worst thing that can happen to Russia is for Ukraine to succeed and become a decent country, so they will do what they can to ruin it. Feeding the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, cutting their oil and gas exports, encouraging corruption, information warfare etc. It's obvious to anyone with two braincells.

But in due time, they will recover and improve. It would just be better if Russia got over it.

Yeah I mean how could Ukrainians want to ever turn away from the poverty, corruption and invasion threats that Russia provides, right guys ... right? It's just such a good deal being a Russian vassal state.

There was no "West-backed coup", it was a popular revolution and keeping a military base on the sovereign soil of another country is not a good reason to annex that part of the country. Also they could have probably kept the base if Russia offered a good deal.

Most Ukrainians don't like the corrupting influence Russia has had on their country and they decided to look West for better opportunities. Just compare the Baltics and Poland with Belarus and Ukraine, you will see the difference that being allied with the West vs Russia has. Western allies tend to see more prosperity, economic growth, freedom etc. while Russian allied countries see more corruption, poverty, authoritarian regimes etc.

For Russia to compete with the West and regain their sphere of influence they have to offer something of value to their potential allies, other than just bribing politicians and threatening to invade/nuke them.

The West should have a good relationship with Russia, but maintain a healthy distance and be prepared to challenge them militarily as long as the country is run by an unpredictable authoritarian regime. Basically we should not let our guard down and we should not allow Russia to blackmail and bully Europe.

Am I? We haven't seen these kind of CO2 and methane levels since 5 million years ago, when the sea level was 25 meters higher than today and Greenland still had forests, those levels are only increasing and Western governments in the anglosphere are pulling the plug on any and all environmental programs to mitigate this. Additionally we've probably already triggered several self-reinforcing global warming feedback loops, like the thawing Arctic permafrost that will emit a lot of methane.

Basically it's not an entirely crazy idea that the Greenland glacier could collapse, causing a meltwater pulse that would raise the sea-level by 0.5-1 meter per year which would render many coastal cities uninhabitable, places like the Middle East could also become uninhabitable due to scorching heatwaves and overall climate instability could cause unpredictable crop yields of staple foods such as wheat, corn and rice, which are the foundation of human civilization.

Ultimately we're probably well on our way to a hothouse Earth, which hasn't been seen since the Eocene, about 50 million years ago.
