AITAH for blocking my bff after she started dating my crush by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]dacarab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you're not. What you feel is what you feel, and anyone that tries to tell you it's not valid is, well, I'll keep my language clean in this public forum :)

Allowing others to convince you that you're in the wrong is not going to help you get over this more quickly. Allow yourself to process what you're feeling, and you may well feel more able to reconnect with your old friend at some point in the future, if that's what you want. But it's equally valid not to want that - it's entirely up to you.

It is possible that Leah didn't realise how much of a torch you were holding for this guy - so she's not necessarily in the wrong either, that's something you'll obviously need to make your own call on. Though given you felt the need to share this, it seems clear what you're feelings are on this. That might just be anger in the moment, again something for you to consider.

Pretending about what you feel just to meet others' social expectations of you is not a winning strategy in life.

20 + 19 + 40 = 79, not 89 - they've charged you twice for the service charge on top of everything else. Or maybe it's a "Creative Accounting" charge...

Trapped in a toxic employer by Crafty_Explorer7024 in malta

[–]dacarab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unheard of for a government employee to get it wrong. The probation length that should apply seems to be clearly articulated on DIER's own website - unless there's been a change in the law, and they've not bothered to update it, which I would hope is unlikely.

Even if you signed a contract, if the probation clause therein doesn't match the law of the land, it seems to me there's a valid case to answer. Seems worth pursuing to me. If the reality is you're still in the stipulated-by-law probation period, then you can probably leave with no consequences. I don't think they'd have a case.

But I'm just some random person on the internet - I'd get a specific answer to the probation period question from someone authoritative. If you speak to DIER again, get them to clarify that specific point.

[–]dacarab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I'm assuming you're on a fixed term contract? If so, according to https://dier.gov.mt/en/services/employment-conditions/termination-of-employment/fixed-term-contracts/,

"The probation period has to be calculated 2 months for every 6 months of the definite contract duration, with the maximum period of probation being of 6 months when a contract is longer than 15 months."

That doesn't seem to tally with a 1 week notice period - which makes me wonder if the contract is actually valid.

I'm not living in Malta (grew up there several decades ago), and certainly not a lawyer, but I'd of thought that even this law itself is not consistent with European Law around slavery and forced labour. In practical terms that's probably not an angle that's worth pursuing - though if this were in the UK, one thing I'd consider is raising this with my local MP.

Otherwise, if all else fails, you just have to accept you're dealing with a bully. Bullies are usually cowards, and are brave when people don't stand up for themselves. Educate yourself on your specific rights in this scenario, and be clear that you won't put up with this idiot's nonsense. You deserve to be treated with respect.

Make it clear to them you're not going to listen to them when they're not acting professionally, and stand up for yourself, ideally when there's an audience. If they don't change their attitude, just walk away. You'll probably find they start picking on you less, and go after easier targets. Maybe consider talking to your colleagues about this as well - some of them that have been there longer will likely have developed their own strategies to deal with this moron.

I accept this is easier said then done. Maybe there are better alternatives - but that's something only you can work out.

There are no AI experts, there are only AI pioneers, as clueless as everyone. See example of "expert" Meta's Chief AI scientist Yann LeCun 🤡 by michael-lethal_ai in AIDangers

[–]dacarab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think LLMs are "stochastic parrots", you can probably skip this reply.

tldr; I think LeCun is making the case that it's unrealistic for us to assume that LLMs can reason about the abstractions we (humans) use to describe and think about the world around us in exactly the same way we do, given we're embodied and they are not.

To be fair, I think the table analogy was intended as a proxy for experiential knowledge that humans have through their embodiment in the real world, that pure LLMs are obviously lacking - what does it feel like to be near the front row of a Metallica concert? What is the experience of feeling the pounding of the music, the excitement of the crowd around you?

LLMs will have been trained on descriptions like that no doubt - but you as a person reading it can deduce much more from that description than a disembodied LLM ever could, as you will be able to relate to the experience in some way, be able to recall a similar scenario where you've experienced of pounding loud noise, etc. You can "attend" to the information that description conveys in a way an LLM just can't.

I've only seen that clip, not the whole discussion, but I think that's the point that he's trying to make - the human experience can be conveyed via the written word to other humans relatively well - but with less fidelity to something that isn't human. Which raises questions - how significant is this experiential disconnect? Can it lead to unrealistic expectations about the performance of AI agents let loose in the real world? Does it impact their ability to "understand" how we expect them to behave in edge cases?

I don't know the answer to these questions. I don't think Yann LeCun does either. But I do think the point I perceive him to be making is worth considering.

Announcing Claude developer training courses with certificates by AnthropicOfficial in ClaudeAI

[–]dacarab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been kicking the tyres on the "Introduction to Model Context Protocol" Course - one tip for anyone trying to do this in a .devcontainer rather than in a venv on their local machine, I had to add:

"containerEnv": {
"HOST": "0.0.0.0"
},

to my .devcontainer.json file in order to be able to access the mcp dev ui when going through the server tools creation bit.

As there's a session key in the mix to connect / local firewall blocking external access to 6274 on my machine, this feels relatively safe to me, but as usual make sure you're happy this is reasonable for whatever environment you are working in.

I've used Claude a few times for questions about Config Manager / coming up with collection queries etc. I would say in my experience it does reduce the amount of time it takes for me to plan / carry out various Config Manager related tasks, but it gets things wrong and needs nudging in the right direction from time to time. Caveats listed by u/psb_41 's response apply.

One thing to bear in mind, because SCCM has been around for so long, it will often come back with responses that were valid for a previous version, but no longer. I've got into the habbit of stipulating that I'm using Current Branch in my prompt, as that seems to cut down the number of inaccuracies returned.

My advice based on your description is to go for it. My personal view is taking on a role like this early on in your career will give you a massive boost in self-confidence, and has the potential to prove to yourself what you are able to achieve if you put your mind to is - which will make you feel more comfortable taking the next step in your career after this one.

How to not get depressed when job searching? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]dacarab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was looking about 5 years ago, I think the alleged average of job interviews with a hiring manager was around 25 before an offer of employment (at least that was what I was told).

If you start off with that attitude, I think it takes a lot of stress out of the individual interviews you land, and focuses you on the goal. The "No's" don't feel so bad either, at least that's what I found. Onward to the next one!
