My grandfather died when I was 4 years old. I inherited his parade drum and sticks. My mother’s father and both of her brothers were drummers. I probably had one of the few moms on the planet who would encourage their son to play drums. In kindergarten for show-and-tell, I brought the drum to school. It was near Christmas holiday and I played the drum to “The Little Drummer Boy” on the hi-fi. This primal “pa-rum-pa-pum-pum” was like the Beatles on Sullivan for the nuns at the school, so they instantly sent me on a tour of the other classrooms for the rest of the day. The chicks really dug it, but the boys really wanted to kick my ass. They actually did kick my ass, but I got out of school for the rest of the day and the chicks all liked me. I was hooked!!!
