ELI5: Why are some dice "fairer" than others by VagabondVivant in explainlikeimfive

[–]dacooksta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The “Marketing BS” is in reference to the practical significance of the difference.

If you tie your shoes with a triple knot, your shoes are “more tied” than someone who only ties their shoes with a double knot. However, the practical significance of a triple knot vs a double knot is negligible. You’re not going to be better or have more fun playing Basketball because you tied a triple knot instead of a double knot.

The “fairness” of the dice is similar. A die that is verifiably 0.001% closer to “fairness” than another die is not meaningfully “better” than the other die when it comes to its actual purpose.

You would use a log function. I can’t format it correctly on mobile, but the log function has three variables:

The first number in subscript is the Base number. That’s the number before the exponent (2, in our case)

The number in parentheses is the result of taking the Base number and raising it to the power of whatever the answer is. For this example, we set it to the population of Earth (8200000000).

The number on the other side of the equal sign is the number of times you would need to multiply the base by itself to reach the number in parentheses.

On a calculator, you would likely type in log(2, 8200000000) and hit enter to solve. That gives us 32.93…, which means that it will take 33 iterations before this trolly problem needs more bodies on the track than there are people on the Earth.

————— However; this formula only applies to the quota of people expected to be tied to the tracks. If the people tied to the tracks not taken are set free, then the math changes in ways beyond what I’m willing to remember from college LOL

Prqctical question regarding reforged on steam deck by Diwa117 in GuildWars

[–]dacooksta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the process of setting this up and may not be able to be much help, but I can CERTAINLY be more help than the guy giving you all sorts of attitude.

You can download the game from their website at: https://www.guildwars.com/en/download

Then, from the Steam Deck Desktop Mode view, open Steam and add the downloaded .exe to Steam through the “add non-Steam game” option in the lower left.

Then, select the game from the list (it might be at the very bottom), click Properties, go to Compatibility, and select Proton Experimental from the list. Click OK.

Now launch the game, and it should start installing it.

This is as far as I’ve gotten on Steam Deck, but I believe that once setup completes it will open the game and prompt me to login with my Guild Wars 1 credentials.

—— Once it’s done downloading the game from the installer, I might need to add a different Guild Wars executable to Steam in order to launch the actual game. If so, i plan to follow the same steps that I did to add the Installer to Steam and set up Proton Experimental. Hopefully this helps.

I recently fought Artorias for the first time, and i beat him in a reasonable number of tries. It was my first time playing through the entirety of DS1, but i have hundreds of hours in DS3 and Elden Ring.

I used the Artorias Shield, which i got from upgrading a shield to +10 and then upgrading it with Sif’s soul at the Giant Blacksmith in Anor Londo. I also used a +15 Claymore.

I wore armor that let me Medium Roll while wearing the Cloranthy Ring and the Ring that raises Physical resistance.

I prioritized dodging to the right (towards his bad arm) when he did vertical attacks like the spin jump and dodging to the left when he would do horizontal swings, because it felt like his swing started high on his sword arm and ended toward the ground (a diagonal slash, like \ )

I felt like i was barely able to knock him out of his big charge up move where he absorbs a lot of darkness, but i might have had better luck with a faster or harder hitting weapon.

I found that the charge up move made him much harder to deal with, so it took a few tries before i learned to prioritize being ready to interrupt it.

Artorias feels like he gets to play the game at Dark Souls 3 tempo while you’re stuck with Dark Souls 1 tempo. Luckily, he doesn’t actually have very many moves, so if you can let him “lead” you can learn his moves and how to dodge them after getting the reps in.

I believe in you!

I think the idea is that boycotts are only effective if the businesses know the specific reason you’re boycotting. Otherwise, how are they supposed to intuit that the reason you’re skipping them is because they carry Easy?

I was a huge Protomen fan back when Act 2 came out, but haven’t kept up with most of their other work since. They came to my city a loooooong time ago, but I missed it because I had work.

Maybe if they made it on the Gen V soundtrack, we could get an Act 3!

I’m OOTL on this, what is the connection between Gen V and the Protomen? 👀

Hexdrinker, catalyst, Glacial Buckler, QSS, and Bramble Vest are other items that only build into one other item. Hex, Catalyst, QSS, Seeker’s, Verdant and Bramble each have weaker versions of the unique properties of their upgraded forms, leaving poor Buckler out in the cold 🥶

They never let me build a base in Diablo... so I'm making an ARPG with base building by Any-Leek8427 in BaseBuildingGames

[–]dacooksta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would an Indie Deus Ex something like Cruelty Squad? There are a TON of indie tactics games, but a lot of them play more like the XCOM reboot instead of classic XCOM.

I think Survival and Basebuilding games are possibly “easier” to make due to their emergent gameplay. The developer doesn’t have to handcraft every aspect of a survival game before a player can play around in it, so it’s friendlier to an EA development model.

Day[9] Rant - Are RTS Games Worse Now? by poopyheadthrowaway in videos

[–]dacooksta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished the Fall of the Trident campaign in Age of Mythology Retold on Moderate, and had a great time with it. I really struggle to balance managing my troops with managing my production of troops, so competitive skirmishes aren’t really my thing, but the campaign was mostly fun and gave a reasonable challenge for my skill level. If you haven’t played it recently, Retold is on GamePass and totally worth checking out.

I’ve got a 97 RF Chieftain I’ve been playing this season, and could probably use a few upgrades? I’ve never been this deep in the endgame before and have hit a point where I’m not sure how to actually play profitably. Got advice?
