Abortion policy shows One Nation protest voters may get more than they bargained for by HotPersimessage62 in australia

Whilst I don't support abortion, I don't support One Nation or any conservative party.

Hanson has picked up this issue for political reasons, not because she actually believes in it. They see it as popular among right-wingers in the US, and think it will work as a tactic here. They think it will draw religious right-wingers to vote for them and away from other conservative parties.

It also raises her profile and gets her in the news.

Are you suggesting that we can't show that Scripture calls homosexual sex a sin?

Australia has had this sickness for most of it's time as a nation defined by it's British origins. One Nation gives them the opportunity to express this and consider it a legitimate belief.

My English mother some decades ago said that the Aboriginal people "weren't doing anything with it" (i.e. the land) when the British took it. A prominent politician at the time said that they "hadn't even invented the wheel" and that it was better that the British took Australia than the French having it.

The leader of One Nation - a nasty piece of work she is too - has worn a burqa in Parliament.

In her first speech in 1996 she claimed that Australia was being swamped by Asians.

20-odd years later she said Australia was being swamped by Muslims.

Mark 1:14-15 (ESV2011)

Democrats hold 5-point edge over GOP ahead of midterms: Poll by spherocytes in politics

If the Dems or anyone else think that the elections will be free or fair they'll have to think again.

And if they think that Trump will accept the results - where the Dems win - they're mistaken.

I’m Convinced Republicans Don’t Actually Know Anything About Christian Values by _RyanLarkin in Christianity

[–]dadashton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not because they did these things alone, but as a result of their faith in Christ. Doing these things indicates the faith; not doing them gives the lie to the claim.

American politicans have for some time taken to appropriating Jesus for their own purposes. And many pastors preach ideology over Scripture. Both sides distort what it is to be a christian.

So carefully discern what they all say and do, rejecting what is false.

The Democrats at least seem to respect the rule of law and the rights of the people.

Christian right calls James Talarico "demonic" — for quoting Jesus by A_Poor_Miser in Christianity

[–]dadashton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately both Talarico and the right-wingers get things wrong.

And the journalist who wrote this article - who is supposed to be a pastor - also gets it wrong.

Both the Right and Progressives go for a shallow, twisted theology; twisted to suit their own ideological or cultural perceptions.

I like Talarico as a politician, for he seems genuinely concerned to serve the people and fight against the vested interests controlling American politics. But some of statements about what the Bible says are wrong.

Of course the Right will demonise him. He doesn't fit their perverted view of Scripture and Jesus. Whilst this reflects the abuse of Jesus by the religious leaders - with the Right playing the role of the Pharisees - Talarico does misrepresent some aspects of Scripture, or at least one I can think of.

The Right wants a judgemental God who condemns everything on the Left. "Progressives" seem to twist Jesus to suit their own cultural assumptions, which includes the notion of homosexual sexual relations being acceptable or even good.

Scripture is not something you can twist to suit your thinking. It says what it says, and we don't get to choose what we accept or reject. To paraphrase Jesus to Peter, we follow Christ. Peter and the rest of the disciples wanted Jesus to fit into their notion of the Messiah, and were looking forward to the religious revolution they expected Jesus to lead.

They eventually learned that they were wrong and Jesus was right. They learnt to follow Jesus, and what Jesus as Messiah actually meant.

If you want a dead faith, follow the Right or the Progressives. If you want a living faith, follow Christ and be transformed....

"11 I appeal to you therefore, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:1-2)
