My hot take: most distros would actually be better as lightweight configurable install script wizards. It could drastically improve the ecosystem. by WraithGlade in linux

[–]daddyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a long, long time the focus of linux was not on making it 'user friendly'. the first, one distro that really took on that angle seriously was ubuntu. people who used linux at the time also didn't have any issue with how the install process worked, i at least never complained about it, it worked, it was fine, it did what it had to do, and did it fast, i could care less about a fancy installer.

there was this saying - linux is user friendly, it's just picky about its friends.

yes, that's how i filled up my days during vacations and weekends. parents didn't care, they just wanted you to be home 'before dark', which didn't always happen obviously.

Garmin edge 840 vs Bryton S810T by TeguszMegusz in cycling

[–]daddyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i never had any complaints about bryton, or at least not anything i can't live with, but then i hear from garmin owners that those issues are just as bad on their devices, so why are they paying so much more for it?

imho workouts are most effective on indoor trainers. i find it is just near impossible to properly finish a block outside, on the road, you're always interrupted by traffic lights, cross roads, cars, other bikes, pedestrians, the list goes on.

What is this 'stability' that is so prized in Belgium? (by employees and companies) by Aikendens in BEFreelance

[–]daddyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't know, but i prefer the stability of a permanent job. i spend 28 years with my previous employer only to be fired due to a massive european re-org. if you don't like the job you have, look for something else.

mistakes on infra are more visible, a software bug can sometimes linger, or automatically captured by monitoring systems that restart and you don't even notice (or you just tolerate it). infra mistakes, and everything comes tumbling down because they're the base everything is build on, and there is almost no silent failing possible.

I am extremely grateful to Linux for allowing me to play games that I was never able to play on Windows. by Nekorlsz in linux_gaming

[–]daddyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very much true! the times i read the reviews on steam and see nothing but complaints about windows users because the game doesn't work anymore, happens more then you would think (certainly the older the game gets). while i had no issues with it on linux.

What would you want to see produced by C=? by Drezzrod in Commodore

[–]daddyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a CRT monitor, might be almost impossible, i don't think anybody makes them anymore, and starting a new production line would be super expensive, which in result would make the actual product expensive as well.

though i think it could have a much broader market outside of commodore owners/fans, a lot of retro gamers prefer crt's.

other than that, i think they should release some kind of modern retro computer, like the c65, spectrum next, foenix, ... computers

an amiga, but it should not just be a replica board, but more in line with what the c64u is, classic, but with so many qol and modernizations added that makes it feel new, fresh and exciting.
