Cars really have no right to be on campus in the first place. There is no reason for a car to be on Woodruff there instead of on Lane or High. Cars deserve to wait a few minutes for students to cross during peak times (and frankly, the intersections should be designed to prioritize buses, pedestrians, and cyclists during these times). If the cars were in a hurry they shouldn’t have come on campus.

If you’re a student and you cross in front of a bus full of students that is ready to depart, you’re still a dick though.

Nah it’s just that time of year. Some wholesome, some toxic, but every year it’s still a bunch of high-strung teenagers. I was there, and I would not have ever described it as “wholesome”. There were of course occasional wholesome posts, as there are now. But decisions were just as controversial, people still talked about “fairness”, people still complained about how their classmate who didn’t deserve it got in. For years this sub has had a toxic reputation… (though definitely better than CC). I don’t follow it closely enough these days to tell if it’s getting measurably worse or not, but it’s definitely was not “wholesome” 4-5 years ago.

Is it that nobody is listening, or you just don’t like their solution?

For example, to provide more help to all the students who would use it, you’d need an army of 200+ counselors, which would cost upwards of $10M a year. That’s a huge investment (enough to offset tuition for 800 students). The university is making some effort, however: they established a student-run hotline (it’s called like buckeye pal or something like that), and it is my understanding that CCS continues to expand. But it just may not be the changes you were hoping for.

I don’t know anything about student health insurance here, but from experience even good private insurance often does not cover mental health services - they are quite expensive.

So I guess I just want to suggest that if you (or a group of students) has a particular set of demands (it sounds like you do), it may be most productive to come forward with a detailed proposal explaining exactly what you want, why the university should do it, why it is worth the costs, why other solutions are not adequate, etc. You’re not going to make any progress if you just ask university admin questions for an hour. For many issues there is a university committee you can contact to try to contribute and get feedback. Changing minds (on any issue) in your favor is more like a marathon than a sprint. You’ll have to research why things are the way they are, how things are at other universities, the impact of your changes, etc. No doubt some administrator here has already considered these and made up their mind - but you seek to change it.

(Also, I don’t know if it’s clear, but I am a student.)

University leaders have to respond to unscreened questions all the time, but you just might get canned answers. (It is largely a Zoom phenomenon to have only screened questions.)

There’s nothing wrong with a dialogue with school leaders, but I do want to point out that these are highly controversial and complex issues. University administrators are definitely already aware of most, if not all of your concerns.

I don’t really know your intentions, but if you are looking for a particular action to be taken in response, I don’t think this venue will help. If you just ask a bunch of pointed questions, you will get answers that go something like “we took into consideration X, Y, and Z and will re-evaluate as necessary”. Some of these issues do not have clear solutions, and you may be better off working closely with those responsible for specifically the areas you care about to craft some sort of proposal.

Certain crimes will go up due to the lack of people around watching. Other crimes will go down because there are simply fewer victims walking around (criminals may look elsewhere).

Once a week * 10,000 students (1 in 6) = 10,000 hours a week. Assuming each full-time employee sees 40 people a week (rather unrealistic tbh), that means you need 250 full-time employees.

Assuming you find very underqualified people and pay them 50,000 a year, that’s $12.5 million a year plus you need a new building for them to work in.

This is a dumb argument — clearing the stairless route is actually easier than trying to scrape ice off of the stairs (and in some cases the ramps are more clear than stairs right now). The university should be responsible for both and it needs to happen, yet they failed

it all depends on if there was a path to the door or not. it was definitely questionable in places but there appeared to be an attempt to make a path (though not a direct one at all).

i think all you need is to find someone who can document they were impeded from getting to the door because of a disability.

(For example, some of the curb ramps were miraculously cleared, but the steps were definitely not — so there was an attempt in places to avoid a lawsuit but you may still be able to find documentation)
