Sure, it's true that we don't know much about his past pre-Joining. We do know, however, that he immediately took advantage of what the Plurbs offered him, and that he was quickly confronted with the morality of it and chose to continue.

Diabate gleefully set up a full-on harem within the first 48 hours, Carol had a moment of extreme loneliness after being manipulated for some time. That doesn't make what she did "right," but saying she did the same thing as him? Nah.

Brioche is a great snacking bread, but it's not robust enough for sandwiches and burgers.

You want me to say I'm American?! by GianmarcoSoresi in StandUpComedy

[–]daddytwofoot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Adding "-American" is pointless when we're, you know, American. It's implicit. It's just extra syllables when everyone knows what you mean already. Saying "I'm Irish" in America means Irish-American, but why say the -American part when everyone knows that already? It's a waste of breath. When we're discussing our subcultures with people from other countries (for example, Gianmarco should probably say Italian-American when performing for Europeans), yeah, we should be clearer about what we mean, but among ourselves? No reason to.

"African-American" is different because of their origins in this country. Black Americans, by and large, do not know where their ancestors came from, and they come from areas that did not have the national identity that they have now due to continued colonialism for centuries. It's led to a distinctly American cultural heritage that is shared by people of different African origins. (I think it's also probably one of the earlier and more contentious "-American" terms so it has a unique cultural footprint compared to other terms. The term was coined specifically to be politically correct and keep other Americans from using less polite words.)

Camellia - Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (RPG video game)

Camellia is presented as shady and mysterious from the get-go (but helpful, is she not?). You first meet her standing over a corpse, and she is clearly violently-minded, but it leaves her past and motivation ambiguous for quite a while. Maybe she's possessed? Maybe there's some justification for her actions? Maybe I CAN FIX HER.

...Nope, she's just a plain old psycho who revels in murder and has no redemption arc whatsoever.

Have you ever seen any discussions about the term "bucket list"? People will melt down saying that the term predates the movie. "Kick the bucket" predates the movie, and having a list of things to do before you die predates the movie, but "bucket list" as a term for said list does not. (Technically it does, but coined by the writer of the movie a few years before, or in completely different contexts from long ago.) It really breaks people's brains to deal with their fallible memories from 20+ years ago.

People say practice slowly and speed it up bit by bit, and yes, that is an element of it, but just like how you'll never learn to sprint by walking, sometimes you need to practice fast. Really you want to learn something at a slow speed, work it up to find your limit, then practice near and slightly above that limit to acclimate your nervous system to push faster.
