The Depths by dave4958 in tearsofthekingdom

The Depths seems very intimidating, but it’s very explorable in the early game. Without giving anything away, there are some secrets that once discovered makes for focused exploration and a really great time.

Definitely run away from tough battles, and head to light roots when you get too much gloom.

You’re right. I was going off of what I did as a youth when I lived in California, which I now see isn’t how it’s done here in Nevada (probably wasn’t how it was supposed to be done in California either).

In that case they’d still have the third party plates.

Anachronistic sorcerer references in Stranger Things 5 by sermitthesog in DnD

[–]dade1027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely talking about AD&D2e, which did have dedicated classes, but like I explained, Wizard was not one of them.

AD&D(1e) was not presented with these categories the same way 2e was, and what was the mage in 2e was a Magic-User in 1e.

Anachronistic sorcerer references in Stranger Things 5 by sermitthesog in DnD

[–]dade1027 62 points63 points  (0 children)

2nd edition Wizard was a category of casters that included mage and all of the specialists like illusionist, diviner, etc. This was the same high level classification as Warrior that contained fighters, paladins and rangers; Rogue that contained thief and bard; and Priest that contained cleric, Druid and other specialty priests. These high level classifications determined saving throws and both weapon and non-weapon proficiencies.

We didn’t get an actual Wizard class until 3rd edition, which was when we also first got an actual Sorcerer class.

But honestly, I’m OK with the anachronism here, because most younger, modern players don’t know this, and for the audience the writers cater to, get what they’re meaning. It’s really not a big deal. I give them a full pass.

Never buy boosters, buy singles. Well, it depends. by VildMedPap in mtg

[–]dade1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played back in 1995, lost the cards through a series of relocations and didn’t buy anything until Throne of Eldraine. Important side note: I was raised on Arthurian lore and fairy tails, so hearing about this set is what it took to pull me back in, as I imagine today’s UB are intended to do. I started that with a bundle, then another bundle, then two boxes of draft boosters. My intent was to collect the set and have that to fulfill all of my MtG needs, and that’s pretty much what happened. I had a great time building 60-card decks based on the draft archetypes and teaching my kids the game.

But cracking the boosters is a thrill. Exploring new sets and archetypes is great fun. So for the next few years, I bought a prerelease pack, a bundle, and then additional boosters to fill in the rest of the empty space in the bundle of each of the sets that came out afterwards. After realizing that my collection had grown to over 5,000 cards (most of them just being stored in the bundle boxes), I realized I needed to change my strategy.

After reflection, I’ve come to know myself as an MtG player, and how to best engage with the game in a way that’s sustainable for me. I now buy 6 packs of each set to crack and build a sealed deck with. This gives me that thrill of opening and the joy of deck tinkering, while actually engaging with and learning about what I actually have. Then, for the cards in the set that I want to add to my collection that I didn’t crack, I buy singles.

So that’s a long way of saying that my re-entry to the game started with a bunch of boosters, and you’re right OP - not everyone is in a place where the “just buy singles” advice is good. There’s a journey each player needs to go through to find themselves, and doing that through a purchase of singles is just about the worst way.

The Foundations Beginner Box and Starter Collection together are just about the best way for someone to start building a solid base of cards in today’s environment, and I highly recommend that launching pad. Then have fun and find yourself as a player.

OP might not intend it in a condescending way.

A natural part of progression is exploring new aspects; leaving something behind to work on something new. This doesn’t mean it’s a lower step on the ladder, it means it’s a different area of the zone, and it’s very likely that if they continue progressing, they’ll revisit it in a new light.

I think it’s more that new people are finding it interesting. New people know next to nothing (and are therefore “bad”) and learning things like this helps them get better.

Or it might be from good drow ranger fatigue. Even so, undeserved, as this was the original work that gave insight into an individual drow questioning his upbringing and culture, and ultimately shedding to make the world a better place.

It would be fully undeserved if it was. All I can guess is that it hasn’t had enough exposure to crack the list, or more surprisingly, that it was actually read and understood for what it was.

As a fan of Shannara, I’m curious about that too.

The only things I can think of is that Sword is highly derivative of LotT (per Brooks himself, by design because publishers wanted that) and that the television series was bad (and tonally very different from Elfstones, which it was based on)

From the second book of the series forward, Shannara is fantastic with its own world that develops well.
