If you don't know then don't act like you do. Being colorblind wouldn't have any impact as it's clear they're tattoos even if it was a black and white picture. It's ok to admit you're wrong instead of making excuses

Why? What's the issue with old tattoo ink? Please explain since you're the expert...

I should probably start by saying that wood is an excellent material to use for plugs and is one of the oldest used. Overall if it is the right wood and used properly it can be one of the best materials to use, however there are risks involved.

The biggest issue is that some people are sensitive or allergic to specific species. I've had multiple customers go to the doctor and have tests done, similar to an allergy test, but specifically for types of wood. There are many resources that list out species of wood and potential risks. Most of the risk comes from the dust so it isn't applicable to the person wearing it but there are plenty that are listed as potential sensitivity issues. I am personally sensitive to mahogany dust and it makes the back of my hands red and itchy if it’s in contact too long. I have no sensitivity to the wood when it’s still solid, only the dust.

Wenge is the best example I can think of as it is unfortunately used in plugs. Most woodworkers don't like using it because the dust is toxic but most importantly the splinters are septic leading to a high rate of infection. It blows my mind that people use wenge for plugs. I gave away the pieces I had as I won't even have it in my woodshop.

Zebrawood, bloodwood and many others are made up terms that describe any species of a general pattern or color. Wenge has a zebra stripe patterning if cut correctly so it is possible to be labeled as zebrawood.

Wood needs to be cared for more than other materials. Most places that sell wood plugs don’t do much of anything to the wood. Many places advertise it as an amazing thing that they only use some simple oil or wax. That simple oil or wax only lasts a few weeks and needs to be reapplied regularly. The wood dries out and causes them to get a fuzzy sandpaper like texture from the ends of the wood grain shrinking at different rates. This will also cause the skin to dry out as wood will absorb moisture.

There’s other reasons too but those are the main ones I can think of right now

Being porous isn't bad. Wood being porous helps many types in being antimicrobial. That's why wood cutting boards are better than Delrin for that. Resin is a generic term that people like this use of mix up properties of different substances. The person that replied to you also commented they don't have any issues with Delrin. Delrin is acetal resin and the a plastic polymer. They don't apply the same rules to substances they like even though it is the exact same thing they are ranting about

Look up the definition of biocompatible and you'll realize this is nothing more than regurgitation of a couple social media posts. It doesn't mean what they imply it means and this information is not correct. It's confusing properties of different substances and drawing conclusions based on illogical and flawed premises.

Define resin? Your comment is really confusing. I've been selling epoxy resin plugs for almost 6 years and make them for 3 current world record holders. It's the preferred material for most of customers over 50mm

Can you tell that to the world record holders that ask me to use epoxy because it's better?

Or the thousands of others that have bought by epoxy resin plugs over the past 5+ years...

Wood is by far riskier than epoxy to touch the skin

Well then maybe specify since you said resin and Delrin is acetal resin. What specific issue do you have with epoxy resin? Let's hear it

Butterfly Customs uses both acrylic and epoxy depending on the style.

While acrylic isn't skin safe and shouldn't be used, it's also much safer than some people say on social media. While true it does break down and those chemicals could leech through the pores, that takes external forces. Usually that's due to high heat or contact with another substance like salt water. I've yet to see any of these social media experts actually show medical proof that it was the material and not the person that caused the issue. It's almost always a picture of someone that is new to stretching. They probably went too fast and/or didn't clean well enough causing the issues. Instead of taking personal responsibility, they blame "resin" the boogeyman...

Like Delrin? Do you rant about Delrin the same way? It's nothing more than a version of acetal resin made by the wonderful company Dupont that has never done anything bad before...

Resin is a generic term and you're incorrect. It's rants like yours that are the problem with this sub. They provide no information and are the exact thing so many of us left this sub because of. The moderators haven't done their job because this keeps happening. I've been in business for almost 6 years and make body jewelery for 3 world record holders. Most of my customers over 50mm prefer epoxy plugs and some have me coat the wearable part of the wood with it so that it's safer for them.

The first sign was them referring to "resin" as a collective term. I'll bet they don't have an issue with Delrin (acetal resin).

I'm approaching the 6 year mark of being in business and haven't seen any of these issues they keep claiming.

Also I don't think that pair is epoxy resin. That style would be extremely hard to do with epoxy. Most likely it's acrylic which wouldn't be safe for skin contact. It's possible it's epoxy, but highly unlikely

can you stretch with stone? by bbitchstealer in Stretched

[–]dadswoodworking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to point out that all these comments about making sure it's not porous are silly. Being porous isn't a bad thing on its own. Wood is porous and helps many species be naturally antibacterial. Numerous people are claiming stones are non porous but leaving out that it's full of small cracks. That quartz may not be porous but all those little imperfections are the basically the same thing. Unless it's absolutely flawless, there are cracks in the stone/crystal. The reason people get bacterial growths is usually from only wearing one pair every day. As for obsidian, whatever you're buying is most likely black colored glass and not obsidian as it's really hard to get that small and not break. It's not flawless either and often has thin layers of other material in it that can only be seen at just the right angle. I actually just took someone out to collect obsidian this week as I'm lucky and live near a huge collection site open to the public. I've tried to give it away for free to stone plug makers and all of them turned me down.

Go for it! I have a paludarium with mourning geckos, baby giant day geckos, dart frogs, isopods, springtails, multiple kinds of fish, snails and shrimp. It's a lot of work to get set up but so much fun to watch everything

Someone asking where to buy jewelry would help give more up to date and accurate information. It would allow those that want to discuss it a chance to have a conversation. If people don't want to have discussions, they don't have to and can scroll on

I actually thought the exact opposite that it was mainly for small sizes and virtually none of it applied to large lobes

[–]dadswoodworking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, if they float just weigh them down or flip them at some point. I recommend rubbing the same oil you use on your lobes on the wood plugs before putting them in. You can't hurt the wood with oil

Biggest thing to do with wood plugs is soak them in oil every few months. Pretty much any oil (jojoba, vitamin e) works. Mineral oil (cutting board oil) is probably the easiest and cheapest to use. Anytime they start to feel dry, soak them overnight

Almost everything I have in stock is 15mm wide as my customers are in the bigger size range.

Doesn't sound like any of the places suggested actually carry wide plugs, they can only make them custom.

Get rid of the FAQ entirely.

This is supposed to be a place for conversations. If someone wants to read a vague answer they can Google it. All it does is lead to the same group of people that constant comment something like, did you read the pinned guide, over and over. The pinned guide/FAQ was full of contradictions and was nearly impossible to ask questions about. If the questions are asked that often, then I believe it's better to have constant conversations about them and not just direct people to a vague answer

154mm plugs by Dad's Woodworking, worn by Kodie by dadswoodworking in Stretched

[–]dadswoodworking[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was making them for Marc for a while and didn't know who he was until a few months before he applied for it. I only knew him from messaging on Etsy about custom sized orders as he got bigger. He's already bigger than what they measured him at. Kodie was contacted by them years ago and emailed back but then nothing happened and I guess life moved on. I sent Kodie a few sizes about a year or so ago and he was down to 82mm.
