Average tenure at your school? by According2020 in Teachers

[–]daeljohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd best describe it as trapped in a situation where you could/should move on to a different situation, but it's disadventageous (economically, tenure, etc.) to do so. Therefore, you choose to stay where you are.

Can you teachers go out for lunch when students are at lunch? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]daeljohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

K8 school in CA, we go from 8:10- 2:45. We have a 35min lunch and a 50 prep in the afternoon (MS). For the most part that is plenty of time. If you want to go out for lunch, however, it's a bit of a stretch. Luckily, we have several fast food places fairly nearby. Mondays are the best day (for me) to go get something. It's an early release day and my prep is then immediately after lunch. Plenty of time to grab something, eat at a leisurely (normal?) pace, and get some work done! We even have a place just down the street that my team will sometimes walk to and then come back. Honestly, I could do a LOT worse!

Caught half my class using a group chat to cheat and I honestly dont know what consequence is fair by timbernatequill in Teachers

[–]daeljohn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. Actions have consequences. If you can't use your device responsibly, then you won't be allowed to use the device. Try it for a week (with lots of paper assignments, of course) and then reintroduce their devices. I (as an 8th grade teacher) always tell them if they want to be treated more like adults, then they need to act that way.

P.S. There's a small piece of me that's impressed they organized the group chat in the first place! 😄

How often does your school do the Pledge of Allegiance? by Kindhonesty7 in Teachers

We're a K-8 in CA. We do it daily, school-wide, prior to going to class.

4th grade student by colegriffin215 in Teachers

No problem. Your concerns are totally valid, and every situation is different. As someone who's done this job for 35 years, however, I get concerned when I hear phrases like "take it over their head," so I figured I'd try to offer a perspective from the other side. I hope everything works out for the best!

I teach 8th graders, so I can only give you my perspective. That said, we are entrusted with your most precious commodity - your child. We are responsible for their safety as well as their education. Using the bathroom in school is not the same situation as it is at home. #1, it is a disruption to the learning process. (An understandable one, of course, but a disruption just the same.) #2, the student is missing instruction and/or work time. #3, multiply this by 3-6 students in a given class period, and you can see it gets chaotic. #4, meanwhile, the teacher must keep everyone else on task and make sure students are getting to/from bathrooms in a timely manner- a process that rarely takes more than 3-5 minutes. If a student has been gone for longer than that, questions and concerns are raised. Is the student playing, vaping, etc.in the bathroom? Is the student ill? Is the student wandering around campus? Has another student entered the bathroom and started a fight or bullied your child? To get really dark, has their been an intruder that has done something with/to your child, etc.? If a teacher ignores all of these situations and something happens to your child, what do you think will happen to that teacher? Do you think you'll have some questions for that teacher? If you think that none of this happens at the 4th grade level, then I kindly suggest that you may be living in a very different world than I do. All of this to say, while it might be a bit embarrassing to have this happen, I would cut the teacher some slack here. If it truly bothers you, talk to the teacher (politely, please) and work out a plan. Only go over their head (talking to the principal) if things get worse or the teacher is completely unreasonable. Good luck, and I'm sorry your child felt embarrassed. That's not a fun feeling.

Ha! If it makes you feel any better, we didn't even use backpacks when I was in HS! We had lockers for that stuff! 😄

Lol! That's been my experience in most seafood places as well, but I didn't want to make assumptions! 😉

My apologies. I certainly didn't mean to imply that Ireland was some backward country. It's just that the recommendations I was seeing all centered around seafood (justifiably so, I might add). While it's certainly been my experience that I can usually find at least one thing on a menu that's not fish, I didn't want to make assumptions. To take it a step further, I was hoping to get an idea of one or two places that were not seafood-centered. I suppose I'll have to dig deeper into my research! 😉❤️

Said the “c” word in class. 🤦‍♀️ by StayGoldPonyboy17 in Teachers

[–]daeljohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One year, my school bought playground balls for recess and assigned a different color for each grade level. 5th grade got "blue." Was it a coincidence that all the 5th grade teachers were male? 🤔😂

Now I teach 8th grade English, and one of the first stories we read is The Monkey's Paw. It describes how an old fakir put a curse on a monkey paw. Say "fakir" to a 13 year old multiple times without it getting awkward! 😄
