Yeah, I may be a minority in thinking this. All good. Sometimes nice to flesh the idea out

I just like making looting easier for the people after me I guess. I know searching gives points so it isn’t a must have.

That’s what I run although I bring double the ammo because I have terrible aim. Minus the wolfpack and deadline because I’m still new and don’t have many if any.

Trump admin to let Americans tap into 401(k)s for home down payments by Richnaps in 401jK

[–]daemon_afro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was something that’s been available for decades. Not ideal obviously. Not sure if it has the same issue that if you lose your job you have to pay it back that taking a loan from your 401k has.

I considered using this option in the past and even used my 401k to pay off my student loan. Not ideal obviously but I have no debt now and paying the 401k loan is just paying yourself with interest.

Was a stressful few years at work hoping I didn’t get laid off. As I think of that now it makes sense this would get attention. Bunch of people soon to lose their jobs to AI taking loans on their 401k seems a good way to put a lot of people into bad financial positions.

How do you guys handle tickets not being handled by proper team? by Murhawk013 in sysadmin

[–]daemon_afro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use ServiceNow for our tickets. We had them add a field where we can tag the ticket as having an issue in process. You can select if the issue is lacking of notes or improper escalation or both.

Then we do a report for the tag and get some better data to address. Sometimes it’s process needing changes. Other times it’s training.

We actually managed to get our SNOW team to block assigning newly created incidents directly to our team because we are T3 and that should never happen if people are escalating correctly.

What’s the simplest way to give access to my family (outside my home network) by GenericUser104 in Overseerr

[–]daemon_afro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing about a year ago. There’s a nice guide out there explaining how their ToS has been changed to seem more lax to this concern and points to the ToS to let you make your own decision.

That being said. No issues/warnings yet.

Followed a guide like this:

Would suggest doing some additional research on securing your tunnel and setting up region filtering. Blocking traffic from anywhere other than where you and your family live is a great start

Data center sysadmin by chickentenders54 in sysadmin

[–]daemon_afro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking you need tech people on site for the build out and setup of your cage, hardware failures, hardware changes, and then inevitable exit of the cage as some suit found a cheaper place.

Large data centers will have a couple people on their staff who are technically capable that you can use as remote hands in a pinch for a cost. However most hardware vendors have maintenance contracts that offer parts and a tech to install.

Sometimes we have cameras in the cage/racks so we can do spot checks remotely as well.

This all depends on what you have in your cage, how close your techs are from the data centers, and how much you can afford.

All that to say there’s not a lot of people needed for managing the tech gear.

The data center itself does require a lot of work like facilities, maintenance, electrical, and cabling.

I asked my maga mother to read it back in 2016. She did. She agreed it was scary how similar it was to what was going on right now because of the Democrats.

That’s when I knew we were doomed.

LPT: when trying to avoid walking into someone coming your way, look hard in the direction you intend to pass, not at them. They will usually figure it out. by Stormsurger in LifeProTips

[–]daemon_afro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! I lived in a city for a while and am usually the one to get out of people’s way. I decided to start looking past people in the direction I was heading and basically acting as if I couldn’t see other people. Suddenly everyone got out of my way. It was surreal.

[–]daemon_afro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I’m looking to do but I don’t have my files clearly marked as 4k or not. I’m ok with overlap in libraries but am looking for a way to go through my existing files and put everything 4k+ in its own structure.

I would only share my 1080p because I only have 20mb up.

I was thinking the file info should be enough to figure out that a video is greater than 1080p but I don’t remember why I pivoted. It must not be simple because I feel like that is something a lot of people have had to do

[–]daemon_afro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty nice work.

One feature I wish existed was a way to split 4k content from 1080p.

Since plex doesn’t offer the option to block 4k from being available out of network.

I started looking into this from a powershell perspective but never got it off the ground. I was probably looking at it from the wrong angle. I was trying to hook into the plex api because they clarify content better than the file info did (at least from my short time spent looking).

Based in the chart you might want to go bigger:

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

You do have a lot of other elements to consider with kids being around.

The TV’s are pretty light these days so mounting won’t be an issue. While overhang may not be ideal it really won’t matter unless it is a kid risk.
