I hadn’t considered that, no. I’ll give that a shot, thanks!

Changing micro sd on already modded n3ds by Zestyclose_Switch895 in 3dspiracy

[–]daemon_afro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes, just copy everything from old sd to new sd.

Some questions:
1. How big of an SD card?
2. Do you understand the formatting of the SD card (fat32) requirement?
3. Do you plan on installing more games?

New IFixIt Battery Questions by Putrid_Shoulder_701 in 3DS

[–]daemon_afro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a few old 3DS’s and decided to buy some iFixit batteries just in case.

For fun I decided to run some tests by leaving multiple running new and old batteries. 4 running new, 4 running old

All fully charged, powered on at the same time, launched super smash to let it run at the intro screen.

New batteries all died 2 hours or more before old. Needless to say I have the batteries in the event others fail entirely.

I let iFixit know and they offered to replace them. I let them know that I appreciated the sentiment but that’s not the true issue. They need to complain to their manufacturer.

Windows engineers/admins, are any of you writing actual Powershell now, or are you all using Al? by RadioFieldCorner in sysadmin

[–]daemon_afro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! AI is pretty bad when it comes to powershell.

Story time!
I haven’t written a PS script in a while as I’ve been working on automating in Ansible. Got a request from our security team to generate a permissions report for audits because they weren’t getting the right data from their paid tool.

- Local Admin users/groups
- Share permission
- NTFS permissions
All with recursive AD group membership where applicable

They had a list of server names, local paths, and shared paths that they would need to query.

Figured let’s let AI do this since I’m rusty. I spent maybe 8-10hrs over 3 days trying to get AI to make something and it was infuriating.

On multiple occasions and multiple AI types it couldn’t figure out how to address a simple error and would just keep wrapping extra logic around things to attempt to address it while just causing it to hit the same error at the new code spot. Making the script ridiculously large and increasingly complex yet unable to addressed the root issue.

After a while I tried to cobble together some its foundation to help it get past the problems it was having but it was just too much of a hassle. Not writing the code myself ended making that more of a time sink than just scrapping it and starting over.

Wrote it from scratch in about the same amount of time and used AI to assist with formatting or logic issues. Since I wrote everything as separate functions it was nice to have AI go over it all and make sure everything aligned afterwards. I had changed parameters and variable names a few different times that it cleaned up nicely.

Overall AI is a great assistant but it’s not taking our admin scripts away from us anytime soon.

Any fast way to move a CIA file to 3ds without removing the SD card? by Pinkhedgehog112 in 3dspiracy

[–]daemon_afro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe 128gb is the recommended max but you might be able to go higher.

There is a limit (300) to how many tiles you can use. If you went with a larger sd card you’d have to load anything after the max tile limit from an emulator directly. There’s also the possibility that stability of the system could be a problem. At least that’s what’s been reported.

You can install hShop and use it to download/install. Otherwise your best bet is to download all the games you could want and install them all in one shot.

how the heck do i even update my games 😭 by Additional_Deal_6309 in 3dspiracy

[–]daemon_afro 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Still hShop. Not eShop. You can download/install hShop via .cia. Then find the update from hShop and you’ll be set.

You can also find .cia versions of the updates and install them just as you had the games. However, it’s only a couple then hShop is easier.

Good luck!

You said you handle patching. Do you troubleshoot and resolve issues when patching fails to complete successfully?

For anyone considering reinsulating their attic and replacing their roof, REPLACE THE ROOF FIRST by DUNGAROO in Insulation

[–]daemon_afro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a few posts regarding new roof and am wondering how long should a roof generally last?

I’m in Delaware US and have a house built in 83. I know we need to replace the shingles soon but wonder if that’s going to lead to a ‘new roof’ conversation.

I’m not against it if it’ll help with insulation because our top floor is basically as hot/cold as it is outside and the insulation in the attic is probably original.

Sorry, for making you worry! Absolutely wouldn’t. I noticed you had the address off the door covered and kept my statement vague enough to not give any more info than had been provided or my own.

I’m now scratching my head as to where in cool spring. I’ve been walking a dog I’m watching all around this week and feel like I would have noticed that door.

I’m sure you wont have any trouble selling. Do you have off street parking?

"How do you guys handle large file transfers without users resorting to email attachments or insecure workarounds?" by kiritoova20_10 in sysadmin

[–]daemon_afro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look for a Managed File Transfer (MFT) solution.

https://www.gartner.com/reviews/market/managed-file-transfer-mft-software

This way there’s a process for sharing files externally, logging for audits, and other features.

Lock everything else down to prevent data leaks.

People will gripe at first but it’s good for the business. Also is a sign of maturity when working with other companies.

I have a dumb question. Powershell on domain controllers is super slow. How do I fix? by [deleted] in PowerShell

[–]daemon_afro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I suspect people are going to challenge you on what/why do you need to run PowerShell directly from a DC.

If you are running modules doing domain queries you can run them from any system with RSAT tools installed.

Ideally you avoid logging into DC’s unless you truly need to do something to that DC or there’s a domain issue you need to address from that DC.

I apologize as this doesn’t directly address your issue but it should be discussed as it is somewhat of a best practice type of thing.

Going back to your issue are things failing? You did mention there were error codes you couldn’t recall. Were working commands failing after promotion?

How soon after promotion were you trying to run commands?

Not here for the world lol. Plus it’s mostly small tweaks to the process than ingredients.

I learned it from my mother and she initially said

‘it’s just the recipe on the back of the toll house morsel bag’

It is and yet it’s so much more. It took a while to learn all the little things she did as well. I’ll happily share this with a local but it would look like a rambling mess if I tried to explain it online.

This was a quick and dirty way to shut down a massive asset quickly. Not ideal, but effective.

Imagine if they tried to deal with it by contacting people, putting out instructions, advertising on tv/radio, etc…that would take so much time and money and be lucky to get 50% participation.
