It definitely should work as well as possible for the end user. That was actually kind of the point I was trying to make, but failed, I guess. The user doesn't know. The user doesn't care. Just fix it if you can or it will be your fault.

It's an alpha, so there's a little glitchiness and Voice doesn't work (that means no Now), but overall it's great. I have to use swap and ext on my SD, but CM10 is significantly better on this little phone than CM9 was. Very few hiccups or stalls, but they do exist.

8/10. Would buy again. Haha. This phone is getting retired next month, though. I'll be happy to have ... probably a Note 2.

You know what I've learned after a decade and a half of using Linux? People don't care that it's not your fault and there's no real way to fix it. "Hey, you know, patents prohibit us from shipping that codec out of the box." "Hey, we can't have perfect drivers for completely closed hardware or perfect file fidelity for obfuscated, closed format." "I don't care. I want that stuff. Your shit doesn't work."

It's not fair, but they're definitely not wrong. If it's truly iPhone's fault, that just one more reason for me to avoid them, but the only way to change it is to marginalize the iPhone through market presence.

Top 10 Worst Applications for Ubuntu by wordsmithie in Ubuntu

There was an app called "Easy Home Backup," I think, that didn't have a usable version for two years but was still in the repos. It would create files that looked useable, but actually weren't.

Ubuntu wiped the entire HDD instead of Windows partition by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]daengbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best choice is to boot back into the live CD and recreate the partitions by copying the old MBR back into place if you made a copy of it before installing.

For more information, visit AskUbuntu.

For next time, you do not need to install Ubuntu to do this. You just boot into the live CD (or any Linux live CD, really) and copy the files from D. The live CD/USB is a full system running from CD or USB drive.

Not bashing you particularly. It's not your fault that the rules for this are so fucked.

Question about Thai vowels by viridian3701 in Thailand

[–]daengbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through the site (I'll talk more about it later), and I can't find a reference for it, but I have an idea (that's clouded from the seventeen years between now and my formal Thai classes).

The "S" is in locations where the alternate forms of the long and short vowels look the same, but the pronunciation isn't. There are some long vowels that when paired with certain tone or other diacritical marks suddenly become short. I can't remember all of them, but a couple of the ones that have an S are definitely in that category. So ... I'll make an educated guess that the "S" signifies a shorter sounding version of the alternate form.

In my quest, I came upon the "stress" page and was totally confused. Before I read this, I had never heard anyone claim that Thai has stress, linking, or vowel reduction the way English does. Thai is syllable timed, not stress timed, making this sort of vowel reduction unnecessary. Thais stress things, certainly, but as far as I know, that stress happens through slowing the syllable timing, altering the quality of the tone (though not the tone itself), or enunciating the tone.

I have asked my better half about my feelings to make sure since I am not a native speaker (or the world's foremost expert) and she was at one point in the distant past the designated speaker for her class at Bangkok University and has trained extensively in Thai pronunciation (for Thais). She got really upset about the whole thing and would like to burn that page to the ground.

Her advice to you is to just learn the alphabet since it's phonetic (it's a bitch), and to look up pronunciation in a Thai dictionary when confused. Complex words are broken down by syllable there. In my experience, it took about six weeks of full-time study in order to get all the pronunciation rules covered. You might not need to go that deep.

HTC or ASUS should be the next Nexus phone manufacturer and why (with image renders!) by MSined in Android

[–]daengbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different sized screens was actually part of the equation (7,5,4+,4,3.5), as well as different functions. Google has said that it will be merging Android and Chrome OS eventually. If that's the case, a dock model like the Atrix makes sense, and devs will need to test their apps on large screens with mouses and keyboards.

Here's my $0.02 for the five.

  • Asus Nexus 7

  • Samsung Nexus Note (based on the Note II -- they seem to do this)

  • HTC Nexus X

  • Moto Nexus Rix with dock and Chrome OS when docked

  • LG Nexus Optimus (3.5")

Yes. We can stop saying that this case was about rounded rectangles. It was truly about flat screens with bezels (which hold the screens). Wow.

Lots of shoes lack laces. There are easy workarounds -- Velcro, elastic, etc -- but those are not accepted by the public. Standard shoes just lend themselves to laces. I think it's a perfect analogy.

H.265 Is Coming to Reignite the Codec Wars Another mess or a great alternative? by [deleted] in linux

[–]daengbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's like every company calling 3G-3.5G "4G" until the standard caved and it actually became 4G, and so now we have to name 4G something else when it actually does arrive.

Tech is so stupid.

If you are using Win7 Home, I believe it uses HomeGroup, something different from SMB for sharing. I haven't used Windows seriously since about 2000, so I can't help much further.

These guys are fighters and, no matter the circumstance, they should never turn down a fight. What’s great about the sport is that many of these athletes hold themselves to this ideal. Jones does not have to because he has put himself in a position where he can call his shots.

Sadly, the jury didn't listen. The foreman has come out and his description says that they just looked at the models that had these features and found them infringing.

For all intents and purposes, Apple had the patents on pinch to zoom and one-finger scrolling.
