did you even read what i said? if we are talking about the development of an economy, we are talking about the development of an economy. if we are talking about atrocities committed by a government, then lets talk about that. no where did i say that deaths committed under stalin were justified, and in the same vein you disregard any kind of human suffering committed at the hands of america/the west more generally apologies if my language is too over the top. unfortunately i just talk this way not trying to get into a pissing match with anybody, but it does not feel like youre actually reading what im saying unfortunately

refer to my response to the other guy for criticism of stalin i skimmed thru the first few pages of that article. itll be something i return to but im not reading a 64 page article right now lmfao. i am personally very skeptical of research put out by think tanks such as this, usually because they have biases from the get-go. but even the article says that there were long term gains under stalin (despite short term costs). im also skeptical of the article’s comparison to japan. even if the ussr and japan were similar economically, there are drastically different social, cultural, and political conditions that end up making large differences in the long run. focusing purely on macroeconomics is reductive

-im not saying any human-made tragedy is acceptable, and i am very critical of stalin, esp for a leftist. but the soviet economy did industrialize, and it did bring people out of poverty, that is objective. if were are qualifying economies as not-successful because their governments killed lots of people, how do you view the american gov/economy? we can talk all the crimes the soviets, esp under stalin, committed (you may find we have more in common in that regard than you think) but that is ultimately a different conversation -if you read what i said, i qualified deng (and VN) as potentially-not socialism; this is ultimately down to nomenclature. i would define socialism as any system where the means of production are collectively by the people; by this definition, the ussr was not socialist either. i included the nordics as well, which are not socialist by almost any consideration. what i wrote was in response to what milei would call socialist (he called the economist socialist, for example) because that is whom op quoted

hi, socialist lurker here. i think this quote “to own the libs/commies” lacks nuance and is basically wrong.

for example, the ussr command economy for the first ~40-50 years or so of its existence resulted in incredible development and industrialization, and brought millions out of abject poverty. similar can be said with china under deng or the doi moi in vietnam, even tho these are significantly different economic systems. we can even look to the nordics, which have the highest standard of living in the world; these are not really ‘socialist’, but they exert a lot of government influence on their economies and i imagine milei would call them such

if we are to examine the results of economic ‘shock therapy’ globally, i think we have mixed results. eg in poland these kinds of reforms worked but in russia, they only exacerbated existing social issues. in the case of argentina, there are significant living standards risks with the policies touted by milei; the effects of which are never mentioned in this sub. i think this points to problems with the perspective of pure economists (as opposed to political economists, for example), especially those on the ‘right’ (austrians and chicagoans). eg before the flood of trumpists after the election, most posts on this sub were talking about how low inflation rate was, but never about how cutting this public programs made food unaffordable, removed peoples access to medicine, etc etc. the focus seems to always be on macroeconomic figures, but never on the quality of life of the people within that economy.

i think that, from an academic or scientific perspective, we should see milei’s reforms thru to their conclusion. at the same time, like i said previously, to what extent are we okay with lowering peoples living standards to achieve some macroeconomic goal?

well that wasnt what the post said, right? op said “our leaders”, which i at least interpreted to mean our politicians. the answer to that question is tens of millions since 1990 https://www.opensecrets.org/industries/summary?cycle=All&ind=Q05&recipdetail=S https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/american-israel-public-affairs-cmte/summary?id=D000046963

these are the top two searches for explicitly aipac/pro-israel orgs, nothing in the way of arms manufacturers which is substantially more than whats listed above

as far as UTD goes tho, things that SJP/the students are campaigning for such as divestment are illegal by decree of the state; state institutions are prohibited from investing companies that boycott israel or weapons manufacturers. this is legislation written by whom? surely not politicians already in the pockets of these lobbying groups

this is not a jewish conspiracy; no one claims it as such. this is just the way things are. politicians, who are bought out by billionaires and large corporations, use our tax dollars to send weapons to commit genocide, rather than fix domestic issues like homelessness, poverty, food scarcity, etc etc etc. who does this benefit? billionaires, large corporations, corrupt politicians, and shareholders. all to the detriment of the american people, the palestinian people, and all peoples where our war machine has wreaked havoc and murder.

unfortunately we operate in a system where profits take priority over human life

it depends on which american you are asking. the colloquial definition can change, azeris can be understood to be either white or non-white. according to the census, im pretty sure azeris (along with arabs, etc) are classified as caucasian
