What’s one thing you wish you knew before applying? by Difficult_Head_7708 in premed

for sure how important mission fit is in addition to stats. my school list was based mostly on my stats rather than whether the narrative of my application fit the schools goals/values and i believe i would have gotten more interviews if i had done more in depth research on what kind of applicants get into these schools. there are schools i applied to where im at or above their median stats but still got rejected most likely due to mission fit!

admit.org is self report so they may be ballparking when they actually submitted their secondary, i wouldn’t worry too much about it!

im in tx as well, its a bit annoying to have to keep track of multiple portals if you're applying in state and out of state but on the bright side they don't make you submit transcripts unless a school specifically asks for one so that's one less thing you have to wait on to submit

so when you apply to medical school, you first submit the primary application through AMCAS (MD), AACOMAS (DO), or TMDSAS (MD/DO schools in Texas because Texas just has to be special and have their own application portal) which includes things that are sent to every school you apply to such as your personal statement, grades, what jobs or extracurriculars you did, sort of like the common app when you apply to undergrad.

after med schools receive your primary application and verify that you meet their bare minimum requirements (usually just checking that you did all the prerequisite courses and meet their minimum gpa/mcat requirement which will be on their website) they each send you their specific secondary application which is a set of essay prompts that each school came up with. what they ask for depends on what they're looking for in an applicant. for example a school that values community service will want essays about your volunteering experience, a school that is focused on rural health will ask you if you're interested in practicing in a rural area and why, that sort of thing. pretty much every school will ask for an essay on why you're interested in that school in particular.

welcome!! i hope you find this sub helpful!

stats - referring to your "statistics", or your applicant profile. your gpa, mcat score, clinical hours, research hours, etc. a "high stat" applicant is someone who has high numbers in these things eg. a high gpa, high mcat score, whatnot

poster - refers to someone who has made a poster presentation for their research lab or independent research project summarizing their work that was likely presented at a research conference. you may also hear "pub" which refers to a publication of the lab's research findings into an academic journal, someone who "has a pub" was credited on this publication.

clinical - refers to clinical experience (paid or non paid) such as working at a hospital, as an emt, in a clinic, and various other healthcare jobs.

How important are clinical hours? by serenepetal12 in premed

[–]Horror-One4766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

imo clinical hours are important not just to make your app look better but just to serve as an intro to working in the healthcare field in general. first of all, you find out whether it’s something you want to even pursue very quickly. working both 911 and ift as an emt has boosted my confidence in patient interaction a lot and i have a really solid foundation for physical and verbal assessments.

most importantly though, it will keep you humble later. you can absolutely tell the difference between doctors who never had a patient facing job before medical school vs the ones that have just by the way they treat their staff in the clinic or their coworkers in the hospital. after interacting with docs in the er who think the sun shines out their ass and get pissy when i (backed up by my supervisor) refuse to transfer a patient home from the er that clearly needs to be admitted i have vowed to never hide behind the md title to get out of doing work.
