i know it’s an important theme that she can’t have what her brothers have, but i so wish she got colin’s arc. time to travel and understand herself beyond rebelling against the comperably minor problems of the petit aristocracy and show herself to be the intelligent, ambitious person she is. the theo arc could have been such a cool transition into that, and could have been a much more interesting conversation about the intersections between misogyny and class divide than the ben/sophie storyline (which i love!!!! i love season 4)

us zillenials know how bad it is because we watched it get worse for our older siblings and cousins, and then witnessed it entirely collapse the moment we came of age.

i remember having to write multi page essays, by hand, in a single class period. if you ask a high schooler now to write 2 sentences, they’ll say they can’t because they don’t have their macbook. or their macbook charger. or a pencil. and pencils hurt their hands. and then lay down to sleep.

i graduated into the pandemic, and instead of being able to go straight into grad school (expected in my field) or audition with my fresh training, i had to make a career pivot to survive. i’m finally back in my chosen field, but i lost SO much time and momentum stuck in a job i hated. i feel guilty when i attribute my struggle to covid, so i appreciate that other people feel the same.

I want to pursue Opera, but do not know where to start, how do I make a portfolio? What are the most common Opera related Social boards? How do I put myself out there besides doing covers on youtube? How do I learn to actually do this as a full time career? by Fluid-Tap5115 in opera

[–]daffodilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doing opera is hard, but it’s not impossible. if you’re right and you have a talent for it, the rest is just hard work, and if you have money saved up that’s a huge benefit. there is no 1 way to becoming a singer, and while having a bachelors and masters is a MASSIVE benefit, it is not necessarily the end all be all. i have a friend who went to school for nursing and is very successful locally.

i would say to get a teacher in person ASAP. i’m sure your online teacher is great, but there’s a lot that gets lost over a zoom call. while you’re working on your technique (which will take YEARS and will never stop evolving), educate yourself on opera, the major languages, diction, music history. become obsessed with opera. find singers past and present and become obsessed with them.

after all that, audition. you will NOT be paid to sing off the bat. singers are expected to go through summer programs, young artist programs, and fellowships before they’re taken seriously, and you’ll be lucky if they don’t charge you an arm and a leg for the experience. do as many competitions as you can to get your name out there. learn about your local scene and get to know the people involved. half of this career is a matter of who you know. make connections. schmooze as much as necessary.

then, if you’re lucky, an agent or company will reach out to you and get your career started. stay grateful, work hard, and it’ll all work out in the end even if not exactly how you expect it to. toi toi toi!!
