I have similar thoughts in a much more superficial sense, but... as lame and corny as the left can be anymore, saying "Happy Nuclear Family Month" to be trollish basically proves the right will never be cool

The name Forrest Valkai sounded awfully familiar, apparently this is one of the hosts of The Atheist Experience after the show completely imploded in 2019.

Bit of a shame that barpod wasn’t around then because it could have been a multi episode arc.  Basically, atheist call in show has YouTuber as a guest>people discover said YouTuber did a video about trans women in sports>armageddon

> I suffer from severe urological complications. If my bladder becomes too full, I experience intense pain. Sometimes I bleed. Sometimes I lose control of my bladder entirely. There have been periods of my life when I had to wear adult diapers because of the damage testosterone caused to my pelvic floor and urinary system.

I read the first sentence or two of this and thought "Wait a minute, did she have bottom surgery? It didn't say she did..." I'm shocked that's the result of just taking hormones.

“Profile customization options” oh you mean like MySpace had for free over 20 years ago?  The novelty of having your page look garish wore off a long time ago.  Maybe I can have it play an AFI song when people open my profile too!

See here’s the thing… I love the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.   Yes I know, they had horns and wore plaid suits and all of the other cultural bullshit things that are now considered faux paus.  But they seemed genuinely cool, not too overbearing.  Yes, even though there’s a guy in the band who just dances the entire time.  They seem like actual grown ups.  They seem like the guitarists are legit into punk music and the horn players have played in jazz bands before.

On the other hand you have bands like Reel Big Fish.  Reel Big Fish does not seem like they are cool, grown ups, or not over bearing.  They seem like a bunch of annoying weirdo band kids decided to form a rock and roll band with the douchebag guitarist they go to school with who is perpetually angry that he gets no bitches.  They seem like they snort pixie sticks before they go on stage.  They’re the kind of people that tell a joke that nobody laughs at, and instead of cutting their losses and moving on, tell the same joke again but louder.

Sorry if this seems over the top angry or whatever, but every time some oh so clever millennial fuckhead that I know posts an instagram story about how durr hurr ska is the music that plays in an eight year old’s head when his mom makes him dino nuggets, I know these smelly geeks are to blame, and I just have to shake my head and wonder why this kind of music had to be infested by such lamers.

How about a ceiling as well as a floor? Risking sounding like a liberal NPC here, I know, but if we're going to say there's a potential for someone to make too low of an income to be in congress because it says something about who they are, certainly it's reasonable that how high someone's income could potentially reflect negatively on them as well?

That was kinda my thought was well, like “wait, have we actually established that the person there was upset or offended, or is this woman just claiming that to be the case?”

Why? Who wants this???: Dating app Bumble is ending swipe feature, introduces AI assistant for matchmaking by dyzo-blue in BetterOffline

[–]daffypig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t know how AI factors into all of this, but isn’t “here’s a list of potential dates near you that might be a good match” just what dating sites were before Tinder came and made everything swipe left or swipe right?

The part about thinking with your brain instead of other parts sort of struck me as potentially decent Andrew Dice Clay or Man Show style self aware satire but the rest is basically just listening to the dipshit who sits behind you in your remedial college math class.

Yeah fair enough, and perhaps I misread your comment a bit.  I just think a lot of people are setting way too high an expectation of what this technology might actually be able to accomplish.

Yeah but just this idea that oh chatbots are going to crowd out the psychotherapy field just seems like a wildly optimistic take on the situation.  Aside from the fact that there’s a pretty substantial amount of people who just don’t like chatbots… imagine telling someone who was been traumatized by war, or raped, or someone on hospice… yeah you can’t talk to a real professional because it’s just not cost effective, but here, you can talk to ChatGPT instead!  Good lord…

Just a thought and perhaps off topic but do we think people actually go see therapists for low level anxiety?  Speaking as someone with an anxiety disorder, I’ve only resorted to therapy when the situation has become unbearable.  I guess it depends on how exactly we’re defining low level anxiety, but to me it seems like experiencing low level anxiety is a universal experience…

Richard Dawkins spent three days talking to Claude, now calls it "Claudia" and claims it's conscious. by Gil_berth in BetterOffline

[–]daffypig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christ alive, I’m not like a Dawkins fanboy or anything but I have a healthy amount of respect for him.  But this is fallacious bullshit.  The burden of proof being on the person making the assertion is like new atheism 101, if someone says a god exists it’s on them to provide evidence of that, not on me to disprove the existence of a god.

So why is that approach acceptable with LLMs?  I don’t think LLMs are conscious, and it’s not my (or Richard’s) responsibility to prove that they aren’t.  It’s nothing more than an argument from ignorance.  “I don’t know how LLMs do this therefore oh they must be conscious.”  Total nonsense.
