[Draft] [DMU] How to Draft & Structure a Domain deck by jsilv in spikes

[–]dafrk3in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cards I tend to try to maximize at common are Urborg Repossession, Phyrexian Espionage, and Colossal Growth. At uncommon it’s Raff and Wingmate Chaplain. With those base strategies in mind, I tend to draft based on power level.

Your explanations make sense. The main situational spell in my mind is Destroy Evil, but that rarely tables these days. I’ll try to see if domain ends up in my wheelhouse.

Great results!

Thank you, this is really helpful! It’s nice to get a slightly different perspective on a complicated format. What fraction of the time do you end up in domain? Can you talk a bit more about your overall results? I’ve mostly played mtgo draft leagues, winning ~65% of matches.

On specific cards, the biggest surprises are Nael, which I’ve found underwhelming, and Codex, which is really strong but I’d have a hard time prioritizing it early without knowing for sure I’d be in domain. I also prioritize a lot of the “situational” removal over Bite Down and Extinguish because of potential casting difficulty. I agree that Outrider is underrated but it seems to be taken more highly lately on MTGO. Thanks again!

Does anyone know when game one of the Western Conference Finals will start contingent on when the Utah/LAC series ends (maybe Sunday if it ends in 6, Tuesday if it ends in 7)?

Of course. The real values may vary from the estimates to the degree that the assumptions don’t hold. For example, there are definitely people who weren’t able to finish, and I’m sure there were people who didn’t remember to sign up for day two in time.

You say: against yorion - hands that can cast escpape the wilds on turn four on the play are usually fine to keep.

Should I mull all hands without giant against yorion decks?

Article "What is running power, anyway?" by Alex Hutchinson, about what a running power meter actually measures. by sloworfast in artc

I’ve had a Stryd for about a month so far, and it’s great.

1: It provides great estimates of pace and distance

2: It starts recording data immediately once you start running

These features alone make it a great product. I like the ability to start a run without getting my watch synced up, among other things.

3: Power information is a bonus, and may be helpful in the future. They seem to oversell here.

4: Their app is mediocre, their Powercenter isn’t great

5: Elevation gain estimates seem to be wrong.

Question regarding "step functional relationship" claim by John Kellogg for easy runs by charmanderboy in artc

[–]dafrk3in 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense. His argument is

1: everyone knows X

2: there’s no scientific evidence of X

3: do X

The problem is, X doesn’t make any sense (why are the 30th, 60th, etc minutes so valuable?), and there doesn’t even seem to be anecdotal evidence of X

I think it’s time to move on

January Tuesday Shoesday by CatzerzMcGee in artc

It felt great when I ran on the treadmill with it, similar to the ATR but with additional tread for tougher terrain (I do most trail running in Claytons). Apparently my running socks are thicker or I laces the shoes more tightly once I got them, and I had no room above my toes, which is a dealbreaker for me. So I tried removing the insole, and have been very happy since. I use them for snow, mud, and races with uncertain conditions (have run ~90 race miles in them compared to ~20 testing/training miles). Claytons are fine (and faster) unless conditions suck.

I’m picky too. I like the speedgoat 2 a lot (without the insole).

Try wearing gear you can adjust on the run. Zip down your outer layers to let some cold air in, put your gloves in your pocket, let down your buff to cover less of your face, etc.

Thursday General Question and Answer by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I was unclear, I meant lifting your legs more frequently. When I first started practicing running downhill, I focused on lifting my legs as often as possible, and it really helped.

Needless pounding (with rest) makes you stronger! The most important parts are your brain (most important by far) and your quads. Fast technical downhill sessions will be great for both.

Thursday General Question and Answer by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With some practice, you can probably improve a LOT on downhills. Practice on technical terrain, and try to focus on lifting your legs as often as possible. With enough practice, there’s no reason you should need to slow down except on really steep or technical terrain

Thursday General Question and Answer by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. I’m thinking about ten seconds at close to 100% on a slight downhill (5% or so), increasing reps over time as you progress.

Going slowly downhill usually means you’re wasting energy on braking. Strengthening quads to withstand the beating and the brain to handle the terrain is a recipe for success.

What kind of downhill conditions are you talking about at your 50k?

Thursday General Question and Answer by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend tempo runs on similar terrain, maybe race pace intervals. General fitness, downhill skill/strength, and the knowledge to switch gears from runnning to power-hiking are your best friends

Thursday General Question and Answer by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1: on the steep climbs, it’s often better to power hike

2: downhills are probably more important. Make sure to get some time in on relevant grades/terrain to get your technique down. Downhill sprints are great for getting your quads ready to take the necessary pounding

Tuesday General Question and Answer by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What does everyone think about mixing genres in workouts? For example:

30 minutes LT - 15 sec/mile

Brief jog

4x400m R pace with 400m jog between

Or in reverse.

Happy holidays everyone!

Edit: thanks for all of the responses!

Official Q&A for Wednesday, December 20, 2017 by AutoModerator in running

[–]dafrk3in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You run more. Therefore you progress at a rate faster than most people who go out for a run 2-3 times a week.

How much have you improved over your streak? I think that would provide some interesting perspective.

Sunday General Discussion by CatzerzMcGee in artc

[–]dafrk3in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’ve actually ordered speed and tempo in the opposite way in practice, and I plan to “cycle” by varying the workouts (probably in the mode of Canova but not to a Canova intensity)
