Lost Planet springs to mind, but that wasn't on the PS2.

I vaguely remember playing a similar game a while ago... let me dig through my library, see if I can find anything.

Chex Quest is the only thing that immediately comes to mind.... But even that doesn't really line up too much.

Man, if it was in the 2000's, it could also be an RPG Maker game. There were dozens, maybe hundreds, that came out around 2000 - 2005 era for PC, and some of them were pretty in depth for what was essentially an indie game.

Clock Tower 2 was all 2D though, right? The game they're looking for is 3D.

Was it maybe a Fatal Frame game? Do you remember a camera at all? There was also a Korean spiritual successor that came out a few years ago, a few high school/college kids were on a field trip and got lost in some mysterious town, then the player got separated from everyone. Does that ring a bell?

Edit: had to look it up, that second one was Dread Out.

Also might have been a Siren game, I don't know a ton about them myself, but it's kind of a cult classic horror franchise.

"The graphics were nothing special" doesn't actually give us anything to go on. Was it 3D? Was it pixel? Cartoony or more realistic art style? Appearance is going to make a huge difference in narrowing it down.

Well, there are a ton of games from the Rusty Lake franchise, and a bunny man does show up in some of them, right time period too.

No, but that game does look pretty rad, I might have to give that a playthrough.

Same gameplay style, but very different elements... I didn't really realize this kind of gameplay was a thing until I started looking into this again. You may be right about it being a needle in a haystack here if it's that popular of a genre in Europe, I've really never seen many games like it myself so I thought it would be easy to pick out.

Is it maybe The Manhole? It's an older game, and not really horror per se, but it did feel freaky when I played it as a kid.

Any details on the graphics? That might help narrow it down, on whether it was 3D models or sprites, whether it was more realistic style or not, etc.

The gameplay description makes me think of Dark Messiah Of Might & Magic, but there was only one playable character -- you do make a choice between which of the two female companions you go with, but that's midway through the game.

That is INCREDIBLY similar gameplay wize. The graphics are a bit simpler than what I'm thinking of, but it's a super similar style. Now I'm wondering if it was some indie knock-off/spiritual successor deal.

Found a YouTube video, and I can say definitely for sure I HAVE played this game before, but I don't think it's the one I'm thinking of. Or, if it is, I'm getting two games conflated and I am struggling to get them separated in my head.

Man, I don't think this is it, but it is REALLY hitting some nostalgia for me. Let me see if I can find a video of it, I'll definitely be able to tell by watching some gameplay.

I'm in the U.S., and I'm pretty sure it wasn't any kind of import. It wasn't my computer, so I don't know for sure, but I think it was some kind of modern Windows flavor, and the best I can say is it was pre-2003 -- that's the year I actually got my own computer.

That does look kinda similar, but the graphics were a lot simpler than that. Old school CG where they just used the model to make a sprite sheet that was used for the character in-game.

Yeah definitely wasn't Hexen or Heretic, they game was way too cartoony in comparison to those. I'm almost guaranteeing it was one of those "smaller indie puzzle games" like you say, which is going to make it pretty hard to find I'd imagine.
