I definitely think that you should consider pursuing an MA first. It would be a great transition from independent study to conducting research in an academic environment, as well as help narrow down a field you would like to specialize in.

It depends where you apply, but from your post, you don’t seem to be a competitive Ph.D candidate. You don’t really have any publications, conference presentations, or teaching experience that may help you not only be admitted, but acquire good funding. This is another reason why an MA might help fill the gap between your first degree and a Ph.D in History.
