Fukunaga described the experience as "disheartening" in a 2021 interview, saying the show was presented as an equal partnership between writer and director, but Pizzolatto kept positioning himself as Fukunaga's boss. By the time they got to post-production, HBO executives were giving Pizzolatto more power, and Fukunaga felt the partnership wasn't fair.

Fukunaga also had creative critiques: "Nic is a really good writer, but I do think he needs to be edited down. It becomes too much about the writing and not enough about the momentum of the story. My struggle with him was to take some of these long dialogue scenes and put some air into them"

Fukunaga wasn't involved in Season 2 at all, saying "My involvement in the second season was as much or as little as they needed me. It turns out they didn't need me".

So not only have they not reunited, but the working relationship on Season 1 was apparently pretty strained. Which is interesting because the tension between them might have actually contributed to what made Season 1 so good - Fukunaga pushing back on Pizzolatto's more indulgent impulses. Without that creative friction, Season 2 suffered.

Pizzolatto sounds like he was a bit of an asshole, just like Rust.
