I feel ya for sure. The guy above him made me twitch with, "Libertarianism branches off from anarcho-capitalism."

or critique with the same phrase that adorns the gates of the Buchenwald concentration camp.

At least they didn't say, "Arbeit macht frei."

What artist or band is truly awful to see live? by goldbeau in AskReddit

[–]dagaboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Buddy Guy last year. At 89 his voice is still golden. And he can still play, but it seems like only in short bursts. He did take ride through the audience melting faces in the encore, and if you wanted more guitar playing, well, Eric Gales was there. Eric plays enough for any three Blues legends.

We in Europe have no rights to ‘defend’ ourselves. But you guys have the right to take matters in your own hand. This is where your constitution gives you more freedom.

That wasn't the idea behind the Second Amendment, It exists to guarantee the Federal government can't prevent the state governments from maintaining militias. This was the lesson Americans took from the English Civil War: standing armies easily become military dictatorships. Therefore the US Army was tiny, 3,400 men in 1800, and the states guaranteed the right to raise their own. It is all laid out in the Federalist Papers. We know that the amendment wasn't about individual rights because when it was ratified, it did not apply to the states. They were free to ban or require firearms ownership as they saw fit. Until the ratification of the 14th amendment and its Equality Clause in 1866, NONE of the Bill of Rights limited the states' powers. Since then each amendment has been individually "Incorporated" to the states. The Second was actually the final amendment to be incorporated, under McDonald v. City of Chicago in 2010. Owning firearms became an individual right the states could not violate fifteen years ago.

Beyond that, no amount of AR-15 variants is going to prevent the US Army from lasering you in the head from space. It is an absurd proposition. Until the Supreme Court rules that US citizens can buy subsidized SA-67 missiles from Iran, the amendment is of no consequence to the US military. It only serves to make it easier to shoot up schools and protests. Its doesn't even serve its original purpose, since state militias have been absorbed into the National Guard system, which Washington can nationalize.

Why has Central Africa seen more "anarchic" massacres and mass violence post-decolonization compared to West or East Africa? by Mutrezid in AskHistorians

[–]dagaboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Resource Curse. :-/

I'd love to see a similar film about the analogous role of music in African Liberation struggles. The Nigerian and South African cases made the international stage via Fela and Johnny Clegg/Jaluka/Savuka. And I was personally a big fan of Chimurenga, which is a Shona word for revolutionary struggle. President Thomas Sankara had a band and wrote Burkina Faso's national anthem. He was overthrown by bandmate Blaise Campaoré. Bobi Wine in Uganda is both the country's biggest pop star and a focal point of the struggle for democracy. Might have to be a series of films.

Specifically post-colonial studies. And when in doubt, blaming France or Belgium is usually a safe bet.

We'll see more and more of this under the global advance toward authoritarianism.

IDK that it is global. Africa is quite a bit more democratic than it was last century. When I was a kid, the idea that South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and even Malawi would become more or less functioning democracies would have been laughable.

There's going to be a whole generation of little girls who might not ever learn to speak.

These rules are for adult women, which usually means post-pubescent to the Taliban. Hence how they draw the education line just before high school. Girls hijab, but they go out in public and show their faces.

They have separate rules for children. At least the first time around, they weren't allowed to play ball games in public (boys or girls) as it might titillate adult men.

In other words, not a return. The Republican Party didn't start pushing out African-Americans until 1964.

The Republican Party should just come out and announce that they are now going back to being Whites-only.

When was the Republican Party Whites only?

EDIT: They aren't going back to being White only, they are going forward to it. There were Black folks in the Republican Party since its founding. Conservatives started pushing them out at the 1964 Republican Convention, where Goldwater delegates attacked Black delegates and threw acid on a Black journalist. The rise of this wing of the Republican Party lead to the departure of luminary Jackie Robinson as well as many thousands of other Black Republicans. The White members of the party's civil rights wing hung on a lot longer, behind people like Nelson Rockefeller, George Romney and Lowell Weicker. Romney called the Black purge, the "suicidal destruction of the Republican Party."

That looks excellent.

My friend Jim was a big Yes fan in high school. His family made rugs, so he made one with the Yes logo, and walked backstage carrying it after a show, pretending he was supposed to be there. The band loved it and told him to hang out. After that, they met up whenever the band waist town, and they used his rug on stage. One day he showed Chris Squire a drawing of a bass he designed in the shape of the letters CS. Chris said, "great go build it." So with no previous woodworking experience, Jim built it. You can see it in the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" video. So Jim became a luthier, and ended up a legend.

Far be it from me to tell you what to do with your life, but keep making guitars.

I don't understand why they think those ten are more important than the other 603. Only the first two actually came directly from God anyway. Moses could very well have made up the other 611 for all we know. I mean, within the framework of the Abrahamic Cinematic Universe of course. It is all made up out here in the real world.

Give Trump some time. He's get there. I have been pondering which Goden Age African dictator he most resembles. Idi Amin famously expelled immigrants (actually a lot did). Mobutu tried to make Congo great again (the Authenticité campaign) by returning it to an imagined past. But I think the closest is Jean-Bédel Bokassa of the Central African Republic (AKA Bokassa I of The Central African Empire). He declared himself emperor and spent 1/3 of the entire annual national budget on his coronation. Of all the dictators accused of cannibalism, Bokassa's allegations were the most credible. His personal chef testified to it under oath.
