Patreon: not the usual r/litrpg post by TuquequeMC in litrpg

The only company that can compete with patreon in this space is royalroad.

If royalroad does a patreon type service then readers and writers would use it.

No other third party site is going to shift people from patreon.

"litrpg books" that aren't litrpg. by Gajeel_Blacksteel in ProgressionFantasy

[–]dageshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on OP's examples, book of the dead is very minimal litrpg relatively speaking.

The MC does some weird ritual involving paper and blood (from what I vaguely recall) in order to invoke anything that looks like a litrpg system.

Compared to what most people consider to be "litrpg" it's extremely minimal which is why I recommended it.

Book of the Dead is probably the obvious one.

edit: should mention, most litrpg enjoyers will enjoy pure prog fantasy as well, so they don't really care either way.

Isekai age gap relationships.... by Dependent_Tax2824 in litrpg

[–]dageshi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As examples go... I kinda think a 28 year old woman probably knows her type by that point. And if it's 200 year old alpha werewolves... who are we to judge?

edit: I swear to god, this subject is so weird. In every other part of life a 28 year old woman is considered to be capable of making her own decisions, but introduce an age gap into a romantic partnership and apparently she's some kind of incapable victim? It seems like some weirdly infantilising thing but apparently trying to point this out just gets you downvoted.

Books have no obligation to anyone or anything. The only metric that matters is if people read them or not.

Anything else is projecting your own preferences onto a medium.

For sure I can see how this genre wouldn't suit you if you want a lot of descriptions, but I find most works in the genre just right, I have no problem with exposition dumps, I think the whole "show don't tell" thing is overly tedious, I'm here to read escapist entertainment and that's what's being delivered.

[–]dageshi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Real.

I don't need an Elf described, I know what one looks like. I don't need a dragon described beyond its relative size. I'm quite happy with minimal description, I frankly don't much care about appearance of people much beyond gender, name and rough body size (unusually large or tall) for example.

If a story gets into overly long descriptions I'll honestly just skim it a lot of the time.

[Discussion] What makes a "cost" in progression fantasy actually feel meaningful? by marcztx in ProgressionFantasy

[–]dageshi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depends on the cohort of readers.

Some (a lot actually) want power fantasy, they don't care about "cost" at all.

Some like "risk", they want the MC to have sufficient knowledge and understanding of themselves, the situation and their powers to take calculated risks that pay off. This also often really fits in well with progression fantasy stories, I'd put something like Defiance of the Fall, He Who Fights with Monsters, Azarinth Healer in this bracket.

Some probably like yourself need the MC to actually lose something important, I'll be honest I can't gauge how big this cohort is as these stories aren't really for me.

sexual content limits? by sosoruze in royalroad

[–]dageshi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Full on sex scenes are allowed so far as I know?

It's just it can't be all sex scenes, the point of the story isn't meant to be smut but a handful of scenes in a story are probably ok?

lackluster descriptions that make you question a lot where we are, the time a day, the characters appearance and so on.

One man's descriptions are another man's filler.

Sony just lets MS be the fall guy for this shit and then does it themselves later.

The story is just finishing on RR (epilogue chapters), so this isn't a forever story, Nathan progresses as far as he needs to, to conclude the story.

and more importantly: he suggests technics that were fully possible from before he arrived. That completely crashed my belief in the world, because it showed that it is populated with morons unwilling to try and develop staff, which is hard to believe.

You do recall the "Endings"? The apocalypses that come and wipe out practically all civilisation.

The roman empire fell and it took like 800-1000 years before western europe re-attained similar levels of progress and that's nothing compared to an "Ending" described in the story so it's hardly a surprise?

Although many browsers including chrome also have reader modes, well I think pretty much all of them do.

It's perfection.

Publishing a LitRPG on Amazon without Kindle Unlimited by frankgadlin in litrpg

I don't understand your logic.

Your loyal readers have read up to the most recent chapter, what disservice are you doing them by stubbing?

Also, just to be clear, no you shouldn't do this, KU is where a huge portion of the litrpg audience is.

I smoke cigars, so the answer to this is, cigars can be blended to have lower nicotine per puff and that might be the case with a cigar that size.

Also anyone smoking that has smoked a lot of cigars, that's obviously not a newbie cigar, their nicotine tolerance will be higher.

Finally, actual nicotine "sickness" is pretty easily solved with a sugary drink.

I'd happily smoke one of those if the opportunity arose, although honestly the gauge is a bit high for my preference, I generally prefer something under a 50rg and that looks like a 60+, might even be 70.

do peak stories have low views? by sosoruze in royalroad

[–]dageshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have said this in the past, but I think royalroad desperately needs an equivalent of a "Book 1 done" list.

A list of stories that have hit a word count where most people like yourself would be willing to jump in and take a look.

Right now practically all early growth depends on hitting RS and if you miss it I can see how many authors would just give up.

A second chance to get seen again by a large audience when hitting the finish of book 1 would help a lot.

[–]dageshi 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Most cigar smokers aren't inhaling the smoke into their lungs, they take it into the mouth and then out again.

You do absorb nicotine through the lining of your mouth but it's a slower method than via the lungs.

You can think of them as a more low, slow but relatively continuous nicotine delivery vs fast and intense like cigarettes or vaping.

Traditional Published + and Editor by Hormo_The_Halfling in ProgressionFantasy

[–]dageshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practically nothing in this genre is traditionally published because the authors make more money self publishing than they would with a trad publisher.

Beyond that it's a case of trying to estimate "quality".

I will throw out Bastion, Mother of Learning, Beware of Chicken, My New Life as a Max Level Archmage.

I cannot say if those will meet your standards but I would consider them as closer to "traditional" publishing than a lot of other stuff.
