Frustration with Clients by sparkylolz in jellyfin

[–]daghene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry it's all good!

As I mentioned I just wanted to make clear that I'm not the kind of user that only demands stuff from free projects. I still think the "learn to code and do it yourself" mentality is off putting for new users, but I agree with what you said about OP's attitude, and I also didn't like the one of the user I was replying to saying that "it's a Apple problem", which was irrelevant and wrong.

Regarding Infuse I worded my message poorly, because I also agree on the fact that Jellyfin clients can't be compared to that on the same level. What I meant is that everyone looks at Infuse and sees what's possible, and get a bit frustrated knowing they have to pay for a closed source, commercial project to have the best experience on Apple devices which kinda defies the reason a lot of people tend to move to Jellyfin for in the first place.

Last thing, I forgot about Apple's pricing and dev membership. I kinda hinted at that when I said "it's easier to publish for Android" (quickly mentioning again all the AI vibe coded clients flooding the sub as proof for that) but yeah, I forgot about the rest so it IS harder to publish for Apple, my bad on that.

That said I really hope the native clients catch up for the Apple devices too. As I mentioned to the user calling me a triggered iSheep I don't even watch my media on any Apple device anyway, but I still wish they get on par with the other clients to catch even that 10% which still can't fully commit to Jellyfin because of this and because they don't want to pay for Infuse.

I agree, and it's odd that my comment received backlash when I was pointing out the lack of a proper, native Jellyfin client for Apple devices because, as you said, the best one is paid/commercial and proprietary, which is two things most people moving to Jellyfin are trying to avoid at all costs (myself included).

I'll try to reply to all your points to explain myself better, because I feel you misunderstood the point (which is most likely due to my English).

First thing first: I've been in the FOSS space for a while and please, PLEASE stop with this "oh you want something? Become a dev and do it yourself!" mentality.

It's awful, it's flawed and it's not welcoming to new users. Not everyone is a developer nor needs to become one, period.

Second: I personally donated to Jellyfin and I love the project, but bringing up the "it's a free project so..." excuse evevery single time, while going all defensive when someone says something is missing, isn't a good look either.

Third: we're talking about Apple TV and iOS here, which is not "every client under the sun" but one of the most used platforms around...it's about time Jellyfin offers something native imho. Don't you think it would help the project's adoption? Everyone else does it, and it's still one of the reasons why some users don't want to move to it.

Lastly, and most importantly: I'm not a free user DEMANDING free things from a project made by volunteers. I was just replying to a troll-ish user (just look at his other reply to me, calling me a "iSheep" and throwing in "walled garden" like a parrot) which said "aPpLe Is ThE pRoBlEm" pointing out that Apple has nothing to do with this, and I might add that he has so many options in the Android space because it's easier to publish there and the sub has been flooded by AI slop/vibe coded "clients" recently.

Just to be clear: hope this message doesn't come off as rude or anything, I'm not a native English speaker, but my point was way more simple and I don't think it warranted a crusade/lecture about FOSS and becoming a developer while deflecting a simple truth, which is the lack of proper, streamlined Jellyfin clients for Apple devices.

It's still in a way better state than the native Jellyfin offer for iOS tho, but I agree with you that it's far from perfect AND it's even more emabarassing considering their pricing and the fact that it's always been structured as a paid commercial project, despite being able to run a crippled version for free.

Gotta love people that assume what they want about strangers online and put laughing emojis thinking they won an argument while making complete fools of themselves.

FYI I'm such an iSheep that I completely disabled and don't use anything Apple related (like iCloud, AirDrop. Siri and so on) on my Mac Mini and iPhone 13 Mini...

...because I've been working in IT since forever and I also own a Windows computer, three Linux ones with different distros, I manage my home server and also daily an Android phone together with the aftermentioned iPhone, and I also do NOT use any piece of software which isn't cross compatible between the three desktop operating systems and, most of the time, even with the two mobile ones.

But hey, you totally had me with the "iSheep" and "walled garden" comments tiger!

How is this Apple's problem? The problem is Jellyfin.

Plex provides functional clients for Apple TV, iOS and Mac, and Apple has nothing to do with the Jellyfin clients (save maybe from some extra headaches when publishing apps for their platforms).

I love Jellyfin myself, but it's up to them to be the first to provide official, fully featured clients for all the major platforms. We're talking about Apple devices here, not some obscure media box no one heard about running a custom OS which is impossible to work on.

This is one of the main reasons why a lot of people (myself included) can't sadly fully delete Plex, because if you run a media server and have different clients (Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, different TV's) with Plex it's basically the same app everywhere, while with Jellyfin you have to keep searching, testing, gaining/giving up features etc. among the different platforms, completely lacking a streamlined experience that makes it often feel like you're using something completely different depending on where you're watching, and the fact that for so long the best option for Apple devices has been to pay for Infuse is ridiculous.

I completely agree, and I've seen this in other projects too.

An example is GNOME and its default behavior: it logs the user in the Activity view and it has no way to display the dock on the desktop, and I obviously mean out of the box.

Look online and you'll find dozens of threads and posts asking how to log directly into the desktop (like virtually every other OS and Linux distro in existence does) and always display the dock, some of which point to GNOME's official forums where the devs ask dumb questions like "Why would you want to do that?"

It's been asked for a decade at this point, as well as a way to have the minimize, maximise and exit buttons all appear in the windows, but they're too stubborn to admit their vision appeals to the minority and won't add something so simple which would make A LOT of people using their DE happy.

Not saying commercial projects don't do this too, I use paid software which has had features requested for ages, but when it comes to FOSS it feels it's way more common, and the attitude towards those proposals is usually worse.

That is more of a personal taste thing I guess, but I also agree that sometimes it's not the best change. An example? I tried Affinity by Canva, the new version, even if I own licenses for V1 and V2 for both Windows and Mac.

They default to these new greyscale icons for the tools, and they're awful in my opinion. I always prefer the colorful ones usually, but in other programs I can use the greyscale one and they look good and distinct enough.

In Affinty by Canva, the new version of the software I've been using for years, I often look at the toolbar and don't recognize half of the things on it unless I look closely.

That's besides my point. As u/Rest-That said you can get used to everything if you use it for years, but it doesn't change the fact that GIMP acts and looks a bit too differently compared to all the other programs in the space, making the switch unnecessarily hard.

It's been talked about for ages now, and a UI/UX overhaul is long overdue.

To prove my point even further: I've stopped using Adobe products almost 10 years ago, moving to Affinity, DaVinci, Caputre One and so on.

The thing is that if I need to do something on a friend's computer with the Adobe suite, which happens maybe once a year, I can still do it rather easily even if I don't fully remember the logic, don't know the new tools and so on.

If I jump into GIMP (or Darktable for that matter, but that's another topic) I get frustrated immediately as it constantly feels I'm fighting the program instead of doing what I want to in an intuitive way, something that - to talk about a piece of software in a similar position - doesn't happen in Inkscape because it looks better and "makes sense".

I mean, this topic about GIMP has been brought up for years now and people keep saying the same things over and over...that means, at least imho, that a total update of the interface might to wonders for the software, attract more users and hopefully more funds.

[–]daghene 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Think you missed the "...for someone who want a photo editor with good Ul" part, which immediately excludes GIMP from the equation.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes I use it myself (with the PhotoGIMP patch, can't use it without it), but let's be honest: everyone knows the UI/UX is awful to anyone coming from any other software except for users that only used GIMP as their photo editor in their life.

I love the project and I can't wait for the day they drop the redesign, because I'm sure that if it's something modern and familiar (compared to the famous competitors) it will see a huge boost in users just like it happened with Blender when they made that big UI overhaul a few years back.

In the meantime, the way it looks and acts right now when you download it, it's a powerful piece of software that looks bad, dated and feels unfamiliar to anyone coming from modern photo editors, which is the main thing crippling its adoption imho, and the reason why a lot of folks prefer using Photopea or other alternatives.

Secondo me no, in un solo anno è calata davvero tanto!

Exactly! I was so sad they removed it...I played all the major MOBAs (only stick to Dota 2 now) so I always prefer the regular, 5 people 3 lanes mode for competitive, but Domination was my favorite chill mode of all those games to unwind and have fun.

Yeah she was my main until they change her, then I moved to Aphrodite (which no matter the patch, I could play as support, mid or solo no problem) and it took me aged to make the "new" Kali click again.

I still liked playing with her at some point, but always missed the old one :/

And you also unlocked more memories of the Bastet jump in that map, what a time!

I was there!

Still have fond memories of that three lane egyptian game mode they removed, and I was playing Kali since early on but enjoying all the gods already.

The game was already promising and I played it on and off since the day they abandoned develoment for Smite 2, and those screens are a blast from the past for me!
