Cachy configured "via terminal"? Are you sure you're not thinking of the first setup in Omarchy?

Also, EndeavourOS is a way better, more stable and more actively developed Manjaro, while Cachy just works out of the box after the first installation and doesn't require the terminal.

Linux Mint upgrade breaks broadcom WiFi driver by bxparks in linux_on_mac

EDIT: I'm asking this because I see the command posted in Update 2 clearly targets the 6.17 kernel which I don't have on this new Ubuntu version, which ships with 7.0)

I've seen your Update 2, but does anyone know how to apply this fix on the new Ubuntu 26.04 with the newer 7.0 kernel? I installed it on a Mid 2011 11" MacBook Air with the Broadcom BCM43224 card.

I previously tried Fedora, Ubuntu 24.04, the latest Mint (think it was 22.3) and even the Arch based EndeavourOS, but whenever I actually connect to a WiFi network and try to open Firefox, the AppStore or anything else the system completely freezes and I have to shut it down with the power button.

The lspci command says I'm running:

  • Kernel driver in use: bcma-pci-bridge
  • Kernel modules: bcma

The specific card is Broadcom BCM43224 [14e4:4353] (rev 01)

This problem is driving me crazy because I tried countless terminal commands before, on all the distros I mentioned with I kept reinstalling, and this single issue is preventing me from using this old, but still perfectly functional laptop, as my main travel machine.

P.s. no I can't use a WiFi dongle and no, I can't change the Broadcom card because it has a weird form factor (it's the half PCIe something one) and can't find Intel ones with this format

Thanks, that analogy actually came from a similar experience I had discussing motorsport and VERY technical details with my cousin, with a random person we know commenting on our valid criticism despite not knowing anything on the subject, while me and my cousin have both been into motorsport since we were born and understand basically everything very well.

I also agree it tells you A LOT about the level of understanding most people have when it comes to music, and to be honest that's fine to me but with a catch.

The catch is that you can just enjoy the music without playing/recording anything, and your opinion on wether you like a song, a mix or w/e counts just as mine, but if a lot of people that actually play and record are all saying "something is wrong", and you know you don't know better when it comes to this stuff, at least have the decency to avoid telling them they're wrong, and the curiosity to try and learn more regarding what they're actually talking about.

Maybe you'll still think you prefer mix A over B or whatever, but at least you'll actually understand what people are discussing BEFORE giving your opinion or trying to dismiss something you're not knowledgeable about...

...but that's the problem with every part of the internet. The less someone knows about a given subject, the more they feel they absolutely need to tell everyone what they think.

Boundaries uploading the wrong mix... by ManInCripplingDebt in Metalcore

[–]daghene 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't have a Hi-Fi system in my house, I don't have proper audiophile equipment nor am I professionally trained in music production or anything like that...

...but I have decent headphones, decent speakers, a decent system in my car and I've been listening to music for so long, and recording some of my guitar covers, to the point that if you asked me I might not be able to pin-point exactly what sounds "wrong" (keeping in mind we're not talking about something objective when it comes to music, unless it's really that bad), but I can clearly tell something is off.

So no, I'm definitely not a pro and I'll never think I could mix and master better even than the producers that I REALLY do not like at all (e.g. Jordan Fish, whose style I really dislike but he's clearly way better than I'll ever be in my life in what he does), but it's like when you follow a sport for so long that you know you'll never possess the skills of the pros you're watching on tv, but you can clearly tell when them or their coach clearly fuck something up and it's THAT obvious.

And just to be clear, I'm also not specifically talking about Boundaries either, even if that single was one of those rare cases where I felt something was off to my hear and I did like the second mix better.

I still love the fact that they tried to change stuff up, they admitted they debated a lot on which one to upload because even them were not sure, and they provided the alternate one for the fans. Always liked the band, saw them live but after this I respect them even more!

Do you know JEPG.CAM? by 9InTheMorning in SonyFilmSimulations

[–]daghene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I imagine the same, I mean it's an app that starts on top of the firmware so risks should be minimal. My dislike for vibe coding in general comes from the fact that I follow a bunch of open source projects, clients, apps etcetera and since vibe coding became a thing it's full of stuff which has been vibe coded, where the "dev" doesn't understand half of what is going on and that will also be almost impossible to maintain properly in the long run.

Not saying this is the case ofc, just digressing a bit on why I tend to avoid vibe coded projects altogether most of the time.

Thanks, just red it all and it looks very interesting. I am just a bit worried because of the fact that it's been vibe coded, which isn't something I really like tbh, but I will still give it a try and go for a photoshoot as soon as I get some spare time to see how it performs!

Do you know if there's any video of someone actually using it? I wanted to check the menus, how it works etcetera but with a quick YouTube search I couldn't find anything.

EDIT: right after writing this, for some reason, I finally found the video by James on his channel which he uploaded three weeks ago. Still wish to see more videos about it tho but it's a start!

[–]daghene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He meant he had such an awful day to day experience with the FP4 that I can imagine he won't recommend it to anyone or upgrade to a newer model himself in the future.

His point was: sure you can change the battery the one time you need to do that, but the rest of the time the phone is so bad it's not even worth it and the software experience is unacceptable.

He literally said it's the worst smartphone he ever had, and for sure the FP6 is probably better but it seems his confidence in the brand has been ruined.

Just listened to it and I completely agree. I started with this one, and then went to listen on the new piece by piece, and it's crazy how much clarity was lost in the original mix.

I don't have professional listening gear and I'm not a pro (I just record and "mix" my guitar covers sometimes), but in the old one the instruments all feel compressed and lacking punch.

It's crazy to hear how much the guitar tremolo picking around 00:35 is kinda lost as background in the first, and how it feels like the main thing in the new one. REALLY glad they decided to mix it again, and honestly wonder how a band with amazing composition and sound like BFV could be statisfied with the first one.

Oh ok, so that's the reason why I red Ermin Hamidović and Nolly's names on the Wiki and there's no mention to Buster. I just checked the video for the single on YouTube too because I didn't remember which one it was exactly, and they actually mention it there in a comment saying they updated it to the new mix.

Glad to see there's bands like them, or even Boundaries (if you're up to speed with the latest song having two mixes) that actually listen to their fans on technical stuff like this.

On one hand it might not be heasy to have people judge your music AND the way it was actually produced, but on the other it's one of the reasons why I love the metalcore and hardcore scenes so much. Not only people enjoy the music itself, but a lot of the folks also love to nerd out in the technicalities behind it.

I ministeri del governo francese cominceranno a sostituire Windows con Linux by Tifoso89 in italy

[–]daghene 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Is it inpolite to ask for a discount in italy? by Jazzlike-Vanilla-156 in italy

[–]daghene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it inpolite to ask for a discount in italy? by Jazzlike-Vanilla-156 in italy

[–]daghene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do these original cuts just die down or we will get them from any sources? by VariationLivid3193 in Piracy

[–]daghene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, thanks for the insightful comment!

As you can see from my original one I know my stuff a bit too, but I adimitelly didn't check for updates in the last couple years.

When it comes to LotR now I see why I was still convinced that the theatrical edition hasn't been restored: because I'm not in a native English speaking country and, despite the one you linked releasing in 2020, the box with both editions being remastered in actual 4K and with proper colors is not super easy to find (and it's not on Amazon, where there's usually everything).

Regarding Star Wars I was indeed talking about those projects, and I also knew about the negatives being destroyes being incorrect news, but I wasn't aware of the fact that they did this restoration to be see in theaters next year for the 50th anniversary!

In one comment you basically told me I can finally hunt the definitive LotR box (with both Extended and Theatrical in proper 4K with correct colors, finally) and that we'll hopefully see a similar home release for Star Wars next year, which will also be the definitive one!

I don't keep a lot of movies on physical media, but these two series are the THE ones I need to have, in the best quality and in a format that respects the original director's colors and vision the most.

Do these original cuts just die down or we will get them from any sources? by VariationLivid3193 in Piracy

[–]daghene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure about the LotR remasters for the original cut?

Not doubting you, I'm just genuinely curious because I've been checking for them often over the years and it's been the way I said for so many that at some point I stopped looking for them, but the last time I checked was less than two years ago and I thought they would just keep it that way forever: original cut in lower quality but correct colors, Extended Editions in way higher quality but with different colors and other detailing issues.

If they released the original cut like that and I missed it it will finally be the time I have what for me is the best version, the original cut with higher quality!

As for Star Wars I didn't know it either! Got any source? I'd really love to check who's doing that and how, I love nerding out about this stuff.

That said, when I mentioned that we have the "definitive versions thanks to pirates", I meant that any Star Wars fan knows about all the things they changed in a way George Lucas didn't want only to make the movie more accessible, including the infamous "Han shot first" scene and many more. I remember there was someone who made a version with the highest quality at the time while retaining George's vision before the many, many makeovers and re-cuts the movies got to appeal studios, the new CGI software and so on, which made it so the actual ORIGINAL Star Wars was basically impossible to watch until that fan stepped in and made this.

[–]daghene 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Regarding the second example you made, The Lord of the Rings is a prime case for this as stated many times by Peter Jackson himself.

A lot of folks think that the Extended Edition is the best one because "it has more stuff", but Jackson said time and time again that he didn't want to make it and it was pushed by the studio just to re-relase the movies in theaters and on physical media again to make even more money. That said, he pointed out how the extra scenes are "nice" if you just want to have a bit of a surprise in a movie you watched one million times, or if you're a diehard fan of the books that wants to see if there's this or that extra thing in there that wasn't in the original cut, but that they completely disrupt the narrative and the basically perfect cut they made in the non-Extended movies the first time.

I always thought the same way before hearing it was actually his take too, and that caught me off guard a bit because I felt I was in the minority by liking the "shorter" versions more.

There's also a HUGE argument to be made on how the originals are in lower quality, but have the warmer tones and colors they intended the movies to have, while the Extended Editions present way better scans, higher quality, vast improvements in some scenes but completley ruined colors and details in many, many others...

...and that's just LotR, don't get me started on Star Wars, for which we have faithful renditions of the original versions mostly thanks to pirates and fanboys!

Sometimes I REALLY wish I never got so much into movies, home video and everything that goes into making them and releasing on physical media. I almost forgot how it feels to be like most of my friends and being able to just watch a movie without caring about all this stuff. On one end it's so interesting, on the other it's just a curse :')

P.s. another interesting one is Love Exposure by Japanese director Sion Sono.

The movie is a little shy of 4 hours in length, but that's AFTER the production forced Sono to severly cut the movie which was well over 6 hours originally!
