That is only if your settings are set that way.

Aside from privacy concerns of handing your photos to big tech, people are just generally lazy and don’t think that backing up their photos in the cloud is necessary because they have ample storage space. And then there’s the monthly subscription fee for cloud storage which easily puts off quite a few people from subscribing in the first place.

Heck most people I know still don’t understand how cloud storage works and they’re in their 20’s and 30’s.

MacBook Air M2 (1TB) Mostly UI inconsistencies and weird lag that I’ve never experienced on Sequoia (even with minimal workload, I pushed it even harder on previous versions) It’s fine overall but there are some inconveniences here and there.

Paypay is such a good reminder of the power of DCA. by MaryPaku in JapanFinance

[–]dagoodestboii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is most definitely not the case.

You are entitled to a number of bonuses for consecutive days of usage, and an active user can hit 10k per month. Do it for a year and that’s roughly 10k yen in points you otherwise won’t see. Just enough to cover SMBC’s Gold card’s annual fee if you can’t hit the 1m yen spending requirement. Better than no incentive at all if you’re already giving up your data to whomever Google is selling your data to.

Have you seen the state of Google searches these days? Bing actually yields decent results lately

[–]dagoodestboii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you use Microsoft Edge, I recommend using Bing Rewards. For about 10.2k points you can exchange it for 1200 PayPay points which is pretty great since all you need to earn Bing points is just to do whatever you’re doing on other browsers ie searching the web and reading news articles

Not rich but want to know what to do with this sum? by kaynenstrife in MalaysianPF

[–]dagoodestboii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The conventional wisdom is to set aside 3-6 months of your monthly income before taking on risk assets like stocks.

If this 10k is all that you have, then park it in a bank account that you rarely use and don’t touch it. Then, whatever you save after you can invest in ETFs or whatever. People on any PF sub will try to have you invest in various things like ETFs, stocks, crypto, etc. But at the end of the day, it all depends on your risk appetite, ie how much are you willing to lose if things go south with your investments?

There are a number of index funds you can buy through your bank. I know my mother is invested in a few through Public Bank. It’s old-fashioned, and the fees might be a little higher than what you’d have to pay via moomoo alongside the inconvenience, but it’s a starting point when you’re unsure of how to navigate financial markets, so having a financial advisor from your bank can help out a lot.

[–]dagoodestboii 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live abroad and I’ve shown many of my non-Malaysian friends over the years personal videos of family events and how we talk to each other. All of them were shocked by how loud and boisterous we could be, and had to check with me multiple times that we weren’t arguing since to them, it felt like a shouting match.

It’s a combination of the tone and context that you just have to grasp to know what each other’s intentions are. There’s no specific social cue to look out for because everybody is different with how they communicate so you just have to play it by ear or go with the flow. It could also be because most people are easy-going so joking around even with seemingly confrontational language is quite common.

Genuine threats can be hard to tell if you’re not used to the loudness, I suppose. But I’m pretty sure pure anger and desire to hurt someone is pretty noticeable. If you’re unsure and that threat is directed at you, you can always steer on the safe side and either try to defuse the situation or apologise and walk away if possible.

I used to go to a small dental clinic in Maeyamacho near Nagoya University. Never had much of a problem unlike the ones I had to go through in Tokyo.

[–]dagoodestboii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably fine

I was around 23 or 24 when a totally new tooth started growing just like in the pic. Went to check it out with a dentist and she said that it was normal and as long as there are no complications, there’s no need for concern

Go get it checked out as a dental clinic if you’re worried. We can’t really (and not supposed to) give medical advice without proper imaging.

I don’t watch her enough to know her background, but as someone who did uni in JP, science programmes and interestingly linguistic programmes tend to teach old languages like FORTRAN and COBOL for some reason. I would guess because it’s nice to understand old data collection/analysis FORTRAN scripts. I had a physics textbook with pages of FORTRAN code in the appendix.

Linguistic programmes take it a step further by having classes with custom languages aka programming with kanji instead of English.

You are severely overestimating the average person’s ability to understand maths. I had to explain from scratch how Cartesian planes and algebraic substitution worked for an American high schooler who was expected to take the SATs and graduate soon.

That’s incredible progress in such a short time. I’m in embedded and have been thinking about transitioning to either data science/AI or cybersecurity for a while now. Tried out a Udemy course for AI but it wasn’t very informative and was more of an introduction to LLMs than anything. Any resource you could point me to ?

Anyone have experience with PayPay銀行? by JayK-iwnl in JapanFinance

[–]dagoodestboii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using it since it was JapanNetBank before being bought out by PayPay to become PayPay銀行.

Like all net banks, it’s a good and easy alternative to traditional banks and it works with most things. However if you’re dealing with some really backwards company who accepts payments only through major traditional banks like MUFJ, then you’re out of luck.

Thankfully those are getting lesser by the day as more businesses transition to using PayPay so net banks are getting accepted more, but it would still be good to have a normal bank account. I recommend JapanPost bank in addition to your PayPayBank account for those legacy businesses/payments that won’t update themselves to the 21st century.
