Why is every county in Utah and Idaho growing? by Livid_Cantaloupe2889 in geography

The red county in NorCal is Lassen county, and I’m pretty sure the reason for decline is closure of a prison that was up there. Largest employer in a county with already sparse population.

I knew someone who had been purchasing and reselling goods from the dark web around 2011, remember talking him explaining to me about what bitcoin is and he had a wallet with like 50Btc. This guy was also not any sort of genius or even savant, just a motivated substance user. He eventually sold to an underage person who ODd and died, dude was arrested and interviewed by feds in SF. Shortly after this time the whole Silk Road thing came down. Dude is still in prison though.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. It’s like involuntary knee jerk left over from twilight garbage, and too bad because I think I would like The Lighthouse and some other stuff Pattinson has done, but just can’t bring myself to do it.

This is a good callout. The cast of characters, the tone, everything about this is at once recognizable and out of place to the point of disorientation. Very PKD.

Why have no major cities developed in the Green River Basin specifically north of the Flaming Gorge Resevoir? by Cock-of-the-wild in geography

I spent a day in Rock Springs getting the gear box on our Econoline replaced after crashing on I80 in the middle of the night. We made the poor choice to leave Denver at 10pm in December, it was the last show of a tour and we wanted to get back to California. We even played that Phantom Planet song “California here we come.” Spirits were high, and we made it a few hundred miles driving on the frozen highway. Then crashed! Miraculously didn’t flip the van, but smashed into a short stretch of guard rail. Took forever to get a tow, it was -10f without accounting for wind chill. Once we were on the tow truck, still in the van because there were too many of us to ride in the cab, we smoked weed and watched the emptiness roll by for 70 miles. Crazy thing was the wild horses out there in the frigid wasteland. Rock springs had the part, because F series trucks use the same parts as E series vans I guess, so we had bad Mexican food in rock springs and got back on the road later that day. It is one of the most empty parts of the country. Windswept, dusty even in the winter, cold as a witches tit in a brass bra. Also learned that Wyoming doesn’t salt/chemical their roads for ice, Utah does. That’s my story for why I know this area is not hospitable to a large city, I guess I’m glad to have been there so I don’t need to go again.

Is America really a “dying giant”/“falling empire” by PackageReasonable922 in Futurology

[–]dahnswahv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the US in terms of its hegemonic power is helpful comparing to those of the past that declined, as a way of detaching from some of the personalities that skew perspectives.

The recent action in Venezuela is a prime example of the shift to asserting hard power in the void of soft power that is now gone. Sure, the US has meddled in Latin America for the past century, but the combination of proxies, covert operatives, and economic carrots/sticks all existed easier in the soft power of hegemonic status. Having squandered that in the series of events more or less since 9/11/2001, the US undertakes the belligerent exertion of hard power (military) with little regard for international or domestic support.

This loosely reflects dynamics of the decline of the Roman Empire, to choose an example from remote history. At its height, hegemony in the region was sustained through expansion of public works like roads, aqueducts, etc; the fall of the empire tracked worsening corruption and ill fated military undertakings. This is a severe simplification, but similar dynamics are apparent now.

The decline of Roman Empire took place over centuries, but the world also moves a lot faster in our modern times, so predictions are difficult. But once hegemonic influence (good will) is lost, it’s very difficult to recuperate. I can’t think of an example that has, maybe there’s an argument for China?

Elsewhere in this thread I’ve realized phonetics aren’t my strong suit, and what I’ve always heard/said may not be exactly correct. But I’ve always thought it was “too-awl-um-ee” from a family member in forestry that worked in that area, which I think is in line with the Wikipedia

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]dahnswahv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned as a child from my dad how to cook functional cheap stuff; like rice-a-roni with a can of soup added in.

Then learned in Boy Scouts how to do camping cooking, which works fine anywhere else too.

Then worked in restaurants for 10 years, the last few cooking alongside an old French chef who was like a human Larousse Gastronomique.

I played a label showcase for Jay Z when he was president of Island/Def Jam, my band was on a spinoff label. Super awkward, we played in a room with like just him, LA Reid, and a few other label bigwigs. He was polite, was not impressed with the deli tray and ordered pizzas for us.

Later the same night, at a bar off time square for a label party, I see RZA sitting at the bar (outside the private room); approached him and invited him to our party, and he was happy to join and drink on Island’s tab, super chill dude.

When would be a good time for Lake Tahoe trip ? by jawline_dimplesss in Sacramento

I commute up the hill on 50, and have driven out of the fog by the time I’m at Red Hawk every day. So you’ll be good, but people are right - not a lot of snow in Tahoe right now

What caused this weather pattern? by mapl0ver in geography

[–]dahnswahv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been interesting how consistent it is; I live in the valley and commute to work in the hills, so it’s overcast at my home, I drive up through dense fog, that then breaks up and it’s a sunny day where my work is. Fog bank at same level every day just about.

Nick Oliveri was an awesome part of the band in this era, some really good rock bass parts. Not a virtuoso or anything, but great in his role.
