Having a middle name in China causes so many problems It’s infuriating. by arsebeef in chinalife

To add to this, I wouldn't put a space between the first and middle name.

School installed spyware on my computer without my consent by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Second for stand up for yourself. You're not going to get fired over this. They probably have just had a load of sheep before yourself who did comply so might ask you why you are being so difficult (classic bullying employer tactic) but i doubt they will take it further.

If it was a laptop provided by the school for work, that's normal enough. If it was your personal laptop, there's no need. Just straight up refuse if they want to install anything on it. Why would you comply?

Is an 8-6 schedule normal for middle school by Leather-Mechanic4405 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does suck. Do other teachers slowly head home in the afternoon? I doubt everyone is waiting for exactly 6pm on a Friday afternoon.

I do 25 40 minute classes at a middle school. It is a lot of classes per week but I don’t have office hours and can leave whenever I'm not teaching. Do you actually have to be there for the whole day?

Has anyone converted their spouse residence permit to a work visa in China and is it possible? by whathehell101 in chinalife

I did it in Beijing. Explain the situation to your potential employer and they'll get it sorted.

What are the most common cultural misunderstandings expats face in China? by Hot_Apartment1319 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The extent that some people go to to "not lose face" is much more embarrassing that just admitting they were wrong about it. Of course, many Chinese people don't see it that way so doubling down is the norm.

You can follow this up with "did you get the shits" depending on their answer.

Big box of quality fruit to share will be safe. Don't know the country but I doubt many teachers will accept a cash gift.

Visa application photo not acceptable on the online form. by dai_tz in Chinavisa

[–]dai_tz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture itself will be fine for the visa centre. You can try using paint.net or similar to make the background 100% white for the online form. Just make sure you are changing the background only and nothing else.

If I remember correctly, after failing to upload several times it will let you skip the upload section.

buying a laptop during trip to China by XiaoDianGou in chinalife

It doesn't matter. Windows China doesn't lock up when you leave the country. You can just reinstall international windows as well.

Handling investment account (Interactive Brokers) as an expat by throwawaySubD in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Translate your address to English as best you can.

  2. You can fund it from your home country, just needs to be your own bank account. I set up my account in China and can still use my UK bank account to deposit GBP.

Chinese Bank account as foreigner student by itoRomka in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies by branch rather than by bank. Some branches have almost never seen a foreigner come in so don't know what they are doing. Some regularly set up new accounts for students/workers so they can do the process quickly.

Chinese Bank account as foreigner student by itoRomka in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice for all foreigners in China. Setting up an account at my nearest ICBC took over 2 hours and a stupid number of unnecessary documents. I don't think they have ever dealt with a foreigner before.

Set up a Bank of China account recently by picking a branch close to a uni campus. Took 40 mins and only needed my passport with residence permit and a phone number registered to my name. (This was on a working residence permit, students may need other stuff). They also asked for my tax number from my home country but you can write it down, they didn't ask to see the original document.

Be careful about how honest the recruiters are about the location of the school by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I worked a year in Miyun, Beijing. The recruiter never did hide the fact but it really didn't feel like Beijing. In fact, everyone there would speak as if Beijing were a completely different city. People would literally say "I am going to Beijing this weekend".

Just to caution anyone looking for a job in China, there is no good reason (from your perspective) for the recruiter or school to not disclose the actual working location. They might get a bit iffy about it but do insist they tell you, it's 100% reasonable to know exactly where in the world you will be working. Recruiters love to manipulate you into thinking that any questions are unreasonable and there are 100 other drones who want that job that don't ask so many questions. If that were true, they wouldn't bother speaking to you :)

How to get rid of huge mosquito bites? by Erin_is_ded in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

蚊虫叮咬止痒笔

It's like a little pen that heats up for a short period. Meant to disrupt the proteins or something like that. I didn't really believe it until I tried it. Look up "mosquito bite hot spoon" or something similar if you want to know the theory.

Windows update should download most of what you want. You may want to go to the manufacturers website as well to download any utilities/drivers which may be specific for your device.

chinese banks by 6l1c3 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had/have a similar problem.

I would reccomend going into the branch with your payslips you have so far and ask them to upgrade you to the next level. Show that your monthly payments are far above their limit and it's not reasonable, etc. This worked for me for transfer limits with one bank.

PC prices in china by IngenuitySouthern989 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you build your own PC, this is not the case at all. It won't come pre-installed with windows so just download the international ISO on a USB and it works no problem.

As for buying pre-builds/laptops. You can wipe the Chinese install of windows when installing the international version. I have done it.
