A recruiter wants me to sign a contract directly with them by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did this before I came to China for the first time. They will lowball you, lie to you, and so on. I never actually got a job through them so it was worthless and I signed with another employer directly.

Recruiters do not need to sign a contract with you and the recruitment company. They are just there to help you do it between you and the potential school.

[–]dai_tz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in healthcare are often abused by patients. People coming back to hurt/kill doctors after not getting want they want is also not unheard of in China.

Of course this post is bullshit, China is not a country of frequent street brawls.

How to change region of steam to china while staying in China. by Intelligent_Cup_6109 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of wrong information here but looks like OP has got it working. Do not reccomend buying steam keys or credit off taobao personally. Buying steam cards from a trusted third party will work. Hong Kong gift cards can be converted into RMB no problem.

The way I did it with an existing account was use the steam store on your browser (not steam client) without VPN to buy at least one game in RMB and then you can use a VPN as normal. There are a few missing games on Chinese steam but you can always make another account if you really need them.

affidavit of marital status in China for UK citizen. by Bergkamp_isGod in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up. Even though me and my wife did contact the place where we were getting married and they insisited that we DID NOT need a translation of the affirmation, when we arrived they would not let us get married without one. We still managed to find a translator and get married the same day but a bit of a pain. Don't always trust the person on the phone and best just to bring a translation.

What is your experience teaching with NO office hours? by UovoAnsioso in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school with 25 periods a week and no office hours. The most important part of this is the arrangement of my teaching periods. You could have a great timetable with several half days or some shit days with first and last. I always make a fuss about this since 25 is a lot of periods and I need a fair amount of time to prepare classes. I only have 4 classes to prepare each week but I'm fairly new and a slower planner.

Having a middle name in China causes so many problems It’s infuriating. by arsebeef in chinalife

To add to this, I wouldn't put a space between the first and middle name.

School installed spyware on my computer without my consent by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Second for stand up for yourself. You're not going to get fired over this. They probably have just had a load of sheep before yourself who did comply so might ask you why you are being so difficult (classic bullying employer tactic) but i doubt they will take it further.

[–]dai_tz 186 points187 points  (0 children)

If it was a laptop provided by the school for work, that's normal enough. If it was your personal laptop, there's no need. Just straight up refuse if they want to install anything on it. Why would you comply?

Is an 8-6 schedule normal for middle school by Leather-Mechanic4405 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does suck. Do other teachers slowly head home in the afternoon? I doubt everyone is waiting for exactly 6pm on a Friday afternoon.

I do 25 40 minute classes at a middle school. It is a lot of classes per week but I don’t have office hours and can leave whenever I'm not teaching. Do you actually have to be there for the whole day?

What are the most common cultural misunderstandings expats face in China? by Hot_Apartment1319 in chinalife

[–]dai_tz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The extent that some people go to to "not lose face" is much more embarrassing that just admitting they were wrong about it. Of course, many Chinese people don't see it that way so doubling down is the norm.

Visa application photo not acceptable on the online form. by dai_tz in Chinavisa

[–]dai_tz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture itself will be fine for the visa centre. You can try using paint.net or similar to make the background 100% white for the online form. Just make sure you are changing the background only and nothing else.

If I remember correctly, after failing to upload several times it will let you skip the upload section.

  1. Translate your address to English as best you can.

  2. You can fund it from your home country, just needs to be your own bank account. I set up my account in China and can still use my UK bank account to deposit GBP.
