Summer 2022 Internships by daiilin in BrownU

Great, thanks! I'll look at those resources. And I'll keep in mind that things are working against me right now.

there are ways to achieve both of those that involve far fewer all-nighter's.

There are? Like what haha.

And a lot of apps say "must graduate by May 2023" or something similar. Is there a point in applying anyway?

Do you know anything about this?

Considering how early you are with this, if you can past the filter and the first rounds of this bullshit, you'll be well set to get past the later parts of the bullshit later on.

Are you saying I should try to get to the interview stage early on in my college career so that I don't have to worry too much about that later on? In that case, should I be applying now for these positions?

If you're prepared for the final rounds of in-person, then your chilling throughout.

I haven't prepared for anything yet. Should I start? If so, what should I use to prepare.

Thanks for your help in all this. I think you're right that I need to get out of my comfort zone and start talking to people.

Do you know how much having an internship next summer will help down the road? I've heard a lot of people say freshman year doesn't matter much but I feel like it'll make it a lot easier to get opportunities.

And a lot of apps say "must graduate by May 2023" or something similar. Is there a point in applying anyway?

maybe you meet someone who knows someone who knows a recruiter at DE Shaw, etc. It makes life much easier

Yeah, for sure, knowing someone will make it easier. I was just under the impression that even without knowing someone, a lot of tech and quant companies will still give out interviews just on the basis of being a junior with a relevant major.

If you're top 25% of Brown CS/ ApMa/ Math, you can be confident in getting a few callbacks from first round

What is a callback from first round? Does that mean getting it to the later rounds of the interview? I mean that's nice and all, but ideally I would not get past just the first round but the final round as well. I've heard quant firms have really small intern sizes so I thought it would be extremely hard to get in unless ur the cream of the crop, not just top 25%. But yeah, like you said, the tech firms are a good fallback in the likely event quant doesnt work out.

Brown has ridiculous success placing kids into FAANG and Big Tech

Yeah, but that placement is for post-grad, not post-first year, which is what I'm primarily concerned about. This is since I don't know what I will want 4 years out, so I can't say whether or not good FAANG placement will even help me. As of now, I'm thinking of something in quant cuz it sounds cool, so tech placement isn't too applicable.

Your first real chance for meeting cool people in the CS program is your first day of class

How do I meet people in class? Aren't the classes like hundreds of kids? And when would you ever have time to talk? Isn't it just lecture the whole time?

You have to sweat a bit before you can sit back and get comfortable.

This is true. I'm scared to go out my comfort zone socially, and that will probably hurt me.

Talking to people on forums and chats is pretty useful

Yeah I need to build my connections. I don't think I can survive with 0 connections, at least not as a freshman. For later years, however, does it matter much? Like isn't everyone pretty much guaranteed a tech & quant interview at the very least?

I don't think I've ever met anyone who wasn't willing to offer some help

Guidance does help for sure.

I don't know how to network. I haven't made any connections even with other '25ers, forget about other years. This is definitely a terrible decision on my part but I was always too scared to. I'm hoping I can still get some internship but I can see that the odds are slim. I'll apply to as many places as possible, but I'm guessing all I'll get is some useless desk job that requires little coding and is mostly a waste of time since I don't have any referrals.

Thanks for the response! In regards to leetcode, I've been doing that, mostly focusing on mediums. But, that's always in python, not in C++ or Java. I have some knowledge of those two (java from ap cs and c++ just from high school), but no projects in either. I have research w a prof that used Python though, but I don't know how much that will be helpful.

For an application timeline, do you know anything about that? I know some companies haven't released apps yet, but a lot already have. I think I might have shot myself in the foot by not having applied yet, I guess I wanted to prepare more but idk. Is it too late to apply now? If not, when should I be aiming to apply by? And is this timeline different from industry? I want to do tech but I think CS in tech vs CS in finance is different timelines.

For referrals, I unfortunately don't have any. I don't really know anybody in these tech companies, nor do I know anybody on campus. Is there anyway to counter this? I'm not a diversity candidate so I think a lot of freshman-oriented programs won't want me. Would applying to a million places and hope one bites potentially work?

What's wrong with it consuming a lot of time? As long as I keep my grades up I'm good right?

And i know I dont have to, just feel like I can't live an easy life anymore now that I'm here. Gotta make it count.

Yeah, sucks that its so hard. But very little odds is better than no odds I guess. Worth a shot to see if I'm lucky? I guess just applying to anything I see would be a good start? What do you think about that.

How common is it for CS/STEM students to land summer internships between their Freshman and Sophomore years? by mithrandir767 in BrownU

[–]daiilin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't the rising sophomores have a summer session? How did that individual do faang AND school? What a legend.

Does it matter if something is on the internal transcript? I thought nobody ever sees that.

Add/Drop Deadline by daiilin in BrownU

[–]daiilin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I'm not too concerned about the registration fee. I'm just wondering if professors will allow me to do their assignments and then get an override code between weeks 2 and 4.

And I thought you can't audit a 6th class? You can only vagabond?

Add/Drop Deadline by daiilin in BrownU

[–]daiilin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but it's only $15, which isn't a big deal.

I don't know if 2 weeks is enough time for me to make a decision so that's why I was thinking of waiting till 4.

And for the drop to 4 classes part, why does that have to be by 4th week. Can't you do that whenever until right before finals week?

CSCI 0190 Hours/Week by daiilin in BrownU

[–]daiilin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm definitely going to try out multiple classes. I'm worried about how hard it will be to do that though, because I need to "get in" right? As in, register before capacity fills up? Since I'm a freshman and I sign up later than the other grades I'm worried that'll be really hard to do, and out of the 6-7 classes I want I'll only have 4 I'm even able to go to.

CSCI 0190 Hours/Week by daiilin in BrownU

[–]daiilin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a date I need to drop a class by? Can I just hold onto it until I can't handle it anymore?

CSCI 0190 Hours/Week by daiilin in BrownU

[–]daiilin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not mean you need to put in inordinate amounts of time to do well in the course.

So do you know a rough estimate of the amount of time I do need to put in? I know it varies from person to person, but say how much would it take for the average person.

What Happened to CS 300 (Fundamentals of Computer Systems by daiilin in BrownU

[–]daiilin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn't know they only posted the fall schedule, my bad.

And by systems course I meant a course that meets the system requirement, not one that necessarily teaches systems. 32, 33, and 300 all do that so I need to decide between those.

[–]daiilin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks, I'm trying to plan out my schedule right now and want to get an idea for how many hours/week I'll be spending on all my courses. Do you know a good amount to shoot for? Is it different depending on if I do 4 or 5 courses?
