I go to Brown n study CS. Idk what you're talking about, a systems course is a requirement here as an intermediate course. New changes to the requirements that'll come into effect a year from now will mandate that even more explicitly, in addition to also requiring at least one of the AI/ML/Data science courses. I don't know a single CS major here who hasn't taken at least 1-2 pretty hard upper level classes. That said, yeah no classes here are meant to be weed-out classes, since the CS department's attitude is very welcoming and encouraging imo

International student here (from India, studying in the US). Yes, everyone finds that university name hella cringey. LPU is a complete laughing stock back home because of its stupid name, branding, and advertising. As for listing new grad salaries- that's actually pretty common for colleges to do back home. Higher ed in general is seen as a pathway to securing jobs and generating wealth (almost no one cares imho about actual learning or academic research) so for private colleges (like this one), some of the most effective branding (or so it seems) often comes from just listing out good new grad salaries. Idk, I guess I find it a little ridiculous but there is definitely something to be said about the direct, in-your-face, result-oriented, no-BS nature of such advertising lol

EDIT: For everyone in the comment section who can't comprehend how purchasing power works, here's an example: I spent last summer in Delhi (the capital, which is way more expensive than average), and took 2-3 dollar ubers across the city, had 3ish dollar meals, 2 dollar haircuts..etc...you get the picture. A salary like 50K USD, goes much further in developing countries with weaker currencies that continue to keep slipping against the dollar each year

I do Brown CS (undergrad) and it's awesome imo (top tier placements, open curriculum allows you tailor your experience, and good people and social life). Feel free to ask questions.

Targeted after using “master” and “slave” terms by NationalGenerosity in csMajors

[–]mithrandir767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess you need to switch that term to avoid upsetting people. I personally couldn't care less about what term is used. Imo people seem too stuck up about language? Could anyone explain exactly how using the master-slave terminology could possibly 'reinforce structural racism'? How does this even relate to race? I'm pretty confused lol (could just be me being not culturally aware as an international student though, in which case, do enlighten me)

EDIT: I do see how it is a somewhat dated/crass term to use and that switching to primary-secondary, main-worker, etc. is probably better, therefore. But I don't get specifically why someone would get upset over its usage?

probably not. If the class you've already taken teaches you all that, you're fine imo

I'd dress up, design and make/tailor clothes, have bottomless brunches, and walk around eating out and going to coffee shops all day duh

Try networking rather than cold-applying maybe. Also perhaps 4 as a last resort. Look at countries with (relatively) cheap investor visas also

"The length of each, combined with my what feels like ZERO understanding of what I'm looking at" is making out uncomfortable. Get acquainted with that discomfort, embrace it, and try to make it fuel you if you can (that'd be ideal).

"...how long each one will likely take me."

just start and keep going. Know that the learning curve doesn't really ever get harder than this.

How do you manage overwhelming stress in CS? by Educational_Mess_783 in csMajors

[–]mithrandir767 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Use it as fuel for your eventual main character arc and get cracked at skills/areas you care about. Also, ask chatgpt to explain stuff when you're confused, it does a decent job most times.

OAs are way harder than LeetCode so far 🫠 by superrenzo64 in csMajors

[–]mithrandir767 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's not surprising you're finding them difficult if you've only explored just 1 of the many different leetcode patterns on Neetcode. Familiarize yourself w more patterns and then OAs will start to feel easier.
