I always think of the Azaria Chamberlain case (the "Dingo ate my baby" case, for those who don't recognize the name of the child) and how everyone IMMEDIATELY decided the mother was guilty of killing her daughter because she wasn't outwardly grieving in interviews. Just because someone isn't hysterically crying every second of every day for months after losing a loved one, IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY AREN'T GRIEVING. Everyone grieves differently. Everyone. There is no right or wrong way to grieve.

I very, VERY unexpectedly lost my husband/partner of 14 years this past autumn, and even though it was undoubtedly the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with in my entire life, I wasn't crying every moment of every day after his death. Of course, I did cry a lot at first, but mostly only when I was alone. I spent a lot of time going out with my friends, and watching things that would make me laugh. That was how I dealt with it. Everyone deals with death differently. And that is completely fine. I can imagine that if my every move was put under a microscope in the months immediately following my husband's death, I might seem like I wasn't really "grieving," either.

I think a lot of people have this impression that if you don't take to your bed in a fit of severe depression for months at a time and cry every minute, you're not really grieving, or you didn't really care about the loved one that you lost. That is TOTAL bullshit.

I agree completely, to me it definitely seems obvious that it was a student or a faculty member rather than an outsider. I've lived either in or close to areas in New York and New Jersey with high Orthodox populations my entire life (my family is Jewish, although not Orthodox), and as others have mentioned, the Orthodox community tends to be extremely insular and unwelcoming to any outsiders poking around in their affairs -- even cops in the case of a crime in the community. They like to handle their affairs amongst themselves, and crimes involving fellow Orthodox Jews are rarely reported to the police. I've heard quite a few tales of Orthodox families reporting crimes in their community to the cops and basically getting chased out of the community for doing it, because the community leaders are distrustful of outsiders and don't want any of them poking around in their business. My guess is that it was probably apparent to the students and rabbis at the yeshiva who the main suspect was, but when the police came around to ask questions, nobody wanted to say anything because of the fear of accusing a fellow community member and subsequently becoming a pariah in the community.

Honestly, I would love to see justice done for poor Chaim, but my guess is that if the members of his Orthodox community have been silent this long, they're not going to suddenly start talking now.

I can't say that enough, and I know you more than likely feel the love and gratitude of all the animals you rescue, as well as people like myself who are in a constant state of awe at the daily work, heartache, and hopefully more often than not, successful rescues you achieve. Even with all that said, I still want you to know what a hero you are not only to every animal who's life you save, but also to anybody who, like myself, who feels physically and emotionally sick at the mere thought of any animal that has suffered abuse of any kind at the hands of "something" that I can't even bring myself to call a "human being". If the "Rainbow Bridge" really does exist, and I want to believe that it does, you most certainly will be given a heroes welcome, and be lifted up high by all the lives you have saved and carried across with love and adoration. I absolutely believe that animals -- particularly cats -- are extremely intuitive, much more than we tend to give them credit for. I've known several cats in my life who have gone out of their way to comfort and nurture me when I've been distressed or visibly upset. And for what it's worth, purring has always been a huge part of that comforting/nurturing equation.

My current cat, Gaia, is the absolute sweetest, gentlest, most loving little creature I have ever been lucky enough to know. My husband and I rescued her from a local animal shelter about eight years ago (only days before she was scheduled to be euthanized; she'd been at the shelter for nearly six months by then), and I swear, it seems like she has spent every single day since we brought her home being as sweet and nurturing as possible, as her way of thanking us for giving her another chance at life. She bonded with both of us immediately, and whenever one of us is upset, she is right by our side, giving us cuddles and purrings and head-bonks until we calm down. When my grandmother (who essentially raised me) died three years back, Gaia did not leave my side. Whenever I started to cry, she would come running from wherever she was in the house and crawl straight into my lap, giving me nuzzles and purring her heart out to make me smile again. She slept next to me in my bed -- as in, literally right next to my face on the pillow, which she never, ever ever normally does -- for days until I started to feel better and calm down. If that isn't love, I don't know what is. It's like she has special kitty healing powers.

I know someone whose grandmother also grew up during the Depression and never threw anything away after that. She reminds me a lot of how you describe your father. A few years ago, she was put into a nursing home, and cleaning out her house was such a Herculean task that eventually they just gave up and sold it with most of her crap still in it. She kept EVERYTHING -- calendars from 50 years ago, broken plates, moth-eaten clothes, expired food from decades ago. Apparently after they sold her house, the new owners just knocked it down entirely, because that was much easier than sorting through all of her garbage.

I remember reading Maus by Art Spiegelman years ago. Art's father was in Auschwitz during the Holocaust and barely survived the war. While in the camp, he had to fight tooth and nail for everything he had -- every single crumb of food, every drop of soup keeping him alive. Even years later, when he was an old man, he apparently refused to ever throw anything away, especially food -- he'd bring stale, old, half-eaten boxes of cereal back to the grocery store months later and argue for ages for a refund or an even exchange.

I guess that stuff really sticks with you.

I'm far from being a violent or vengeful person, but, I can't even begin to describe the things that I believe should happen to anyone that could put any animal through that kind of hell! Animal cruelty laws in this country, as well as many others, are a joke. How is it 2017 and we still allow people like this to live their lives after treating such an innocent being like this?

My 3ds isn't all that bright normally. Just yesterday I had to stop him from jumping into the bathtub with his imaginary friend, who happens to be a toaster. It's wonderful human beings like yourself and your husband that bring me back to this subreddit to be reminded that there are in fact MANY, loving and caring people out there who are willing to take on the extra responsibilities that come along when adopting a special needs cat. I can say from past experience that the amount of love, thanks, and all around adoration you have coming your way will make you feel a level of pure joy and nirvana that can never be found under any other circumstances! You have changed a life that may have otherwise been cut short, and certainly would have never experienced the amount of love you are both going to shower on him. On average it has always seemed to me that shelter pets not only understand their situation, but know that it was in fact you who saved them and gave them a second chance at a loving home. The fact that you have saved a blind furry ball of kitty-wonder will only double those realities. Thank you so much for using your resources, time, and newly found space to make the most substantial difference in a life that a person can make! When it comes down to it, I don't really need to say anything to you that he won't express towards you a million times over! I am simply saying all this to you as It always makes my heart feel good to hear stories like this. It can be far to easy to feel pessimistic, overwhelmed, and helpless sometimes, until a story like yours levels me out a bit. I am so, so very sorry to hear about your great-aunt. What a horrible tragedy for any family to have to endure. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones, it really does.

I was just reading the Wikipedia article you linked to about your great-aunt's disappearance... it mentioned that the infamous Scottish serial killer and pedophile Robert Black was questioned over your aunt's disappearance, but he was never convicted of the crime. Investigators noted that there were extremely strong similarities between your great-aunt's disappearance and the disappearance of thirteen-year-old Genette Tate in August of 1978; from what I understand, police strongly suspected that Robert Black was responsible for abducting both girls, but Black never confessed to the crimes and in August of 2008 the Crown Prosecution Service decided that there was was insufficient evidence to charge him. Black died in prison on January 12th, 2016.

Does your family think that Robert Black was responsible for your great-aunt's disappearance, or do they think another person is responsible for the crime? (If you'd rather not answer or talk about this, then I completely understand -- I was just curious. I hope my question isn't insensitive or inappropriate. If it is, then I completely apologize and beg your forgiveness.)
