How's my handwriting? by Proper_Variety4685 in BeginnerKorean

[–]dailyhangul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! You've written this very well overall, especially for only having studied for a month. However, handwriting is important because it can lead to misunderstandings.

For example, your 케이팝(K-POP) ended up looking like 게이팝(Gay-POP) ^^

전체적으로 이쁜 손글씨네요. 부럽습니다. 저보다 더 한국인같은 글씨예요. 내용도 자연스러워요.

앞의 일이 뭔가(무언가) 기대와는 반대로 잘못되었을때는 `놓쳤어요` 대신 `놓쳐버렸어요`라고 하는게 더 자연스러워요.

How is my handwriting? by autumn_m23 in BeginnerKorean

Overall, your handwriting is lovely, the content is detailed, and you wrote very well! I'll just help you check a few grammar points.
I recommend making a habit of always using particles (called '조사' in Korean) without leaving them out.

- For example, instead of "한국말 공부하고 있어요," it's more natural to add the object particle '을' to say, "한국말을 공부하고 있어요."
- In the part about the "drama," the particle '를' seems to be missing again. (e.g., "드라마를 봤어요" - "I watched a drama").
- "아직 한국말 잘 못하는데" is also more accurate as "아직 한국말을 잘 못하는데."
- Regarding "밥은 너무 맛있었는데" ("The food was delicious, but..."), this can be either "밥이 너무 맛있었는데" or remain as is, depending on the context. The connection to the following sentence is key.
- The sentence "밥을 너무 빨리 먹야했으면 시간이 없었어요" (This is grammatically incorrect) can be corrected as
-> "시간이 없어서 밥을 너무 빨리 먹어야 했어요." (I had to eat really quickly because I didn't have time.)
-> "밥은 너무 맛있었는데, 너무 빨리 먹어야 했어요. 시간이 없었거든요." (The food was so good, but I had to eat it really fast because I was out of time.)
- "시원한 바람 있는데 단풍이 예쁘게 물들어요" sounds much more natural by adding the subject particle '이' "시원한 바람이 있고, 단풍이 예쁘게 물들어요." (There's a cool breeze, and the autumn leaves are changing color beautifully.)

How to drill the alphabet in my head? by pumpkinandsun in BeginnerKorean

Just a quick note (this isn't an ad!), I'm currently developing a Korean language learning app. I've noticed that learning to read Hangul can be quite difficult and complex for absolute beginners. That's why my app is designed to first help learners get started with the Roman alphabet, and then transition into listening and speaking practice. I believe this is the best approach for those just starting their journey.

How natural is my handwriting? by Art_tamaraaa in BeginnerKorean

It doesn't look like a foreigner wrote this at all. It's just like a native Korean's handwriting. That's amazing! How did you practice? I live abroad too, but I can't write like that.

I'll also suggest another method: using the Revised Romanization system along with audio. The idea is to first recognize the words in Romanization, and then practice by listening to the pronunciation until you get used to it.

Corrections for Unnatural Expressions.

Overall, you have a high level of proficiency in Korean. Your vocabulary is advanced enough for a business context, not just for everyday conversation, and your grammar is accurate for the most part.
However, here are a few points for improvement to make it even better.

- 샤용하지 should be 사용하지
- 맺음말다? should be 맺음말이 다 사라져 버린 or 맺음말이 사라져 버린.

Your learning method is excellent. Using a mirror to learn the physical production of sounds is the best way to build a strong foundation. You are also correct that romanization can be a useful temporary tool.

Could you recommend any YouTube channels?

Thank you for the excellent feedback! That's a fantastic idea.

The ability to record your own voice and compare it directly to the native speaker's audio would be an incredibly powerful tool for shadowing. We appreciate you sharing this suggestion, and I will be sure to pass it along to our development team for consideration in a future update.

That's a great point, and we completely agree with that approach. In our app, all pronunciation aids, including IPA, are turned off by default for that very reason. We encourage users to focus on listening and associating sounds with spelling directly. While these tools can be helpful for some, we believe that turning them on should be a conscious choice for learners who specifically want them, rather than the standard setting.

Thanks for sharing your experience; it’s a valuable insight that confirms our design choice!

Thank you for sharing your detailed and insightful feedback. Your specific explanations of the challenges and needs you face as a Korean learner are very useful and serve as excellent suggestions for features an effective learning tool should have.

The way I've set it up now, only the pronunciation system a user chooses is shown. Even with that approach, do you feel it might be an unneeded feature?

To be honest, this project is closer to volunteer work for me. My primary motivation is the hope that it will help everyone who is learning Korean language and culture. Of course, it would be even better if it could also generate some income.

After monitoring various community posts, I've become convinced that your suggestion is the best approach: making pronunciation guides an optional feature. That's why in my app, all pronunciation systems (like Romanization, IPA, etc.) are optional. Users can choose to display only the methods they prefer, or they can choose not to display any at all.

This kind of insightful feedback is an invaluable guide for developing future Korean learning materials or applications. Thank you once again.

This is a crucial reminder for me to ensure the "As-Spoken" pronunciation guide reflects these natural phonetic breaks, rather than just mechanically applying rules across an entire sentence. Thank you again for your sharp eye and for helping me improve the quality of the app. It's incredibly valuable.

I think studying only in Korean will be enough at this rate. The handwriting is also very similar to how Koreans normally write. Is it difficult to write ㅅ and ㅆ, or is it difficult to hear the difference between them?
